Description

Feb. 19, 1929, 1,703,000 l D. FROEHLICH AwNING ROLLER cons'rnucTIoN Flled May 14, 1927 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb.` 19,1929.
Davie FROEHLIC; or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
.LwNINGROLIJER CONSTRUCTION.
yApplication led May 14, l1927. Serial No.- 191,503.
.This invention relates to improvements in an awning roller construction.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a positive means of fixing the awning` roller kto the ldrive spindle so that the roller will turn therewith during the Winding andunivinding of the awning about the same.
Another object of the inventionresides in an awning roller construction in which a recess is provided in one end of a roller to receive t-he bushing of a cap fixed to the end of a roller and through which bushing a spindle extends While a keypasses transversely through the roller, bushing and spindle to keep the parts together to prevent any accidental t-urning of the same relative to each other upon rotation of the spindle.
1With these and other objects in view, the :invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement'of parts, the essentialr features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, andare illustrated in the accompanying draWing,in \vh.icli:-
` Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im-y proved awning roller and its supporting means.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line of Figure 1.
, Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the supporting bracket.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10, designates my improved awning roller which comprises. a solid wood body 11 having a` iange cap- 12 on each end thereof. The diameter ofthe cap is greater than the diameter of the body to permit of an outer. tubularcasing 13 toV fit over the body and beneath the flange of the cap. A recess 14 is provided in the end of the body ttor receiving a bushing or sleeve 15 which extends inwardly from the cap and receives the inner end of a spindle or stub shaftt 16. The inner face of the cap is prof vided with brads 17 at the joinderof the bushing therewith and which brads are embedded in the outer end of t-he body to maintain .the cap in position thereon. yAfterthe cap has been applied to t-he end'of the body,`
nails 18 are passed through openings in the cap and are driven into the body to prevent rotation of the cap With respect thereto.'
the shaft has been inserted into the gr, a nail er key 2O is driven transverse- Atte hush i roller.
vInec-l'ianism is old in the art but yhas been ly throughthe `body .and extends through the aligned openings provided in the bushing and shaft 16.
The outer end of the shaft 16 is ournalled in a two-part housing 21 andextends slightly beyond the housing for a. purpose to` be presently explained. A Worm gear 22 is fixed to the shaft 16 and is concealed Within the housing, which Worm meshes With gear 23 fixed to a vertical operating rod 24 which depends from the housing and by Whichan operator imparts a turning movement to the The construction of the Winding paratus upon a supporting structure such as the front of a building or the like, I provide a pair of space- d brackets 25 and 25 for respectively supporting the opposite ends of the roller. The bracket 25 is provided with an outwardlyv extending arm 26 having a notch 27 therein for receiving the stub shaft 28 extending from the end of the roller opposite to the end from which the shaft 16 extends.l The shaft 28 is keyed to the body of the roller in the same manner as that de scribed for the Shaft 16. A y
The bracket 25 comprisesa fiat piece of strap metal bent to provide an attaching part 29 having openings therein for the passage of screws or like fastening elements 30. All arm 31 extends at'right angle to the part 28 and is provided-with a notch 32 for receiving the projecting end the shaft 16, and a notch 33 for the receptionv of either of a pair ofVT-shaped klugs 34 an( 35`vvhich extend from opposite lsides of the housing 21. The,
particular lug' used for engagementwith the notch 33is dependent upon theposition at l which the bracket is mounted on a supporting structure. 'If the structure is of sufficient Width to allow the bracket tobe mounted as shown in. the drawing,V then it is mounted thusly, but should the vWinding apparatus bushing extendinn` Yfrom said cap into said recess, a spindle int-ting Within said bushing and extending therefrom, and a key passing transversely through said body, bushing and spindle for keying the roller to the spindle.
2. An awning roller Comprising a body portion having a recess in an end t'iereof, a flange cap itting over the end of said body, the ange being disposed in spaced relation 10 to said body., a bushing extending from said cap into Saidv recess, a tubular easing' fitting over said body and having' its ends disposed beneath the Hnge of said Cap, a spindle extending into said bushing, and a key passing transversely through Said body portion, bushing and spindle for keying the roller thereto.
In testimony whereof have aiXed iny signature.
