DRINKING FOUNTAIN FOR POULTRY.

My said invention relates tov drinking fountains and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character for supplying water to poultry and which will auto- 5 matically maintain a predetermined quantity or weight of water in a receptacle all as will be hereinafter more fully described .and

Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,

In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a base which may be weighted if de sired to assist in maintaining the fountain in upright position. Said base is provided with a supply pipe 11, for attachment to a water supply line such as a rigid or flexible pipe, and to said supply pipe 11 is secured an elbow 12 in which is mounted an upright pipe 13. The upper end of the pipe 13 is provided with a reduced opening 1 1 through which water may flow into a trough or pan 15 formed preferablyof a circular shape with an upi standing beaded rim and with an adjoining bottom portion slanting downwardly from said rim and connected with a central inclined portion which slants upwardly to the center of the trough. A sleeve 16 of slightly greater length than the depth of the troughs is secured centrally of the same said sleeve being telescoped over and freely slidable on the pipe 13 and a concave disk 17 is secured about the lower extremity of the sleeve with its peripl'icry secured to the inclined inner portion of the trough. This constructionv forms a rigidv durable support for the trough which will not permit a slight weight on. the rim of the same to flex or bend the material to cause it to break away from its support.
The upper end of the sleeve 16' is threaded at 18 and a collar 19 is threaded on said sleeve said collar having a substantially rectangular frame 20 carried thereby, the same being attached to said collar at diametrically opposite points and disposed in the plane of the longitudinal axis of said sleeve. This frame 20 forms means for supporting the trough 15, the upper portion of the frame being adapted to seat on the upper end of the pipe 13 and v in cup which is mounted a cushion 23 of rubher or the like material which seats upon the end of the pipe 13. A second deflecting member orsemi-circu1ar bell member 24 is threaded on the upper end of the pipe 13 to cause the water to sprayoutwardly in a sheet away from the said pipe although the same may be omitted if desired.
With the foregoing construction when the pipe 11 is connected with a water supply and the trough or container 15 is elevated water will pass upwardly through the pipe12 and be deflected downwardlybythe bell'member 21 and outwardly by the bell member 24 into I said trough 15. If the trough were main-' tained in such position water would overflow but when'released the weight of the trough and water therein will press the cushion 23 against the discharge opening 14 in the pipe 13 and function as a valve to cut off the sup- .ply of water. v In order to maintain the trough in elevated position to permit water to flowinto the same when it is empty or the water therein is below a certain level I provide a collar 25 having a bifurcated extension at one side in which is mounted a lever 27 having abifurcated forward end 28 with the arms of the same disposed on opposite sides of the pipe 13. A second collar 29 is mounted on said pipe 13 beneath the sleeve 16 of the trough said collar having a pair of depending opposed arms 30 pivoted to the bifurcated end 28 of the lever 27. A slotted weight 31. is mounted on said lever 27 and a set screw 32 is provided for securing the weight on the lever in any desired position of adjustment, so that the same maybe varied to vary the quantity of water kept in the trough. The collar 25 is provided with an extension 33 which forms a stop for the arm 27 to limit its downward movement. The weight 31 is fixed in such adjusted position that it will normall hold the arm 27 downward against the pro ection 33 while at the same time the forward end of the lever will he lifted and will hold the collar 29 with the trough. thereon in elevated position with the cushion 23 out of engagement with the end of the pipe 13 and permit water to flow into the trough but when the water flows into the trough sufiicient to overcome the weight and depress the same the cushion 28 will shut-0ft the supply.
I preferably provide a substantially conical shield 3% comprising u ring of a size to tit snugly within the upright rim of the trough 15 and having a plurality of wires extending upwardly and secured between a cup 36 and a conical incnilmr 37 by means of a set screw 38, the conic 1 member being preferably provided with grooves in Z\.'hirh The wires are preferably the 'wires rest. spaced. spurtsutiiciently to permit poultry to ins their heads there-between but they are su'tliciently close togethi-ir to prevent stranding in the trough.
It will he obvious to thorn skilled in the art that various changes 'uiuy be made in my device without departing: -Qroin the spirit or? the invention and theretore I do not limit myself to what she-uh in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, .wnat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A drinking fountain comprising an upright supply pipe, 21 deflecting member mounted adjacent the end of said supply pipe, at second deflecting member mounted in position to seat against the end of said sup ply pipe, a frame carrying: said second deflecting member, and a trough associated. with said frame and adapted to more the second deflecting member against the end of the supply pipe for closing the same when i as set forth.
