DL INKING FOUNTAIN.
Application and November 4-, 1924:. Serial No- 747,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON TnoNn Lnwrs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysville, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Fountains, of which the follo' ring is a speci fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in drinking fountains and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with poultry, stock and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the delivery of the water to the tank or container is under control of the rise and fall of the level within said tank or container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the parts may be readily and conveniently assembled and effective'ly maintained in such assembled relation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my imimproved drinking fountain whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more 35 fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a fountain constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;-
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating the upper portion of the supporting member as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a base plate of desired configuration and dimensions and to which is clamped by the hook members 1 the cup member M, said hooks being directly en gaged from above with the flange 2 defining the base 3 of said member M. Resting on the central portion of the member M is a. tank or container T the lower portion of the peripheral wall of the tank or container T being spaced from the flange 2 of the member M whereby an annular-continuous drinkin trough 5 is provided. The wall 4 immediately adjacent to the bottom of the tank or container T and below the. upper free edge of the flange 2 is provided there} around with a series of spaced openings 6 whereby the water within the tank or container T may fiow into the trough 5. The wall 4 of the tank or container T at a predetermined point thereon is provided with an outstanding and vertically disposed bead providing the channel 7 in which is re ceived the lower end portion of a vertically disposed feed pipe 8. The applied lower end portion of the feed pipe 8 has disposed thereover the clamping strap 9 the extremities of which being secured, as at .10, to the wall 4 at opposite sides of the channel or groove 7. The feed pipe 8 leads to a suitable source of water supply, herein disclosed as a container 0 constituting a reservoir.
The upper portion of the pipe 8 is provided with an outstanding shank or arm 11 which is directed through an eye 12 carried by the upper portion of a supporting member S. The supporting member S is here in .disclosed as substantially in the form of an inverted U with the eye 12 at substantially the center of the intermediate portion 14 of said member S. The lower extremities of the side arms 15 of the member S are provided with the lateral extensions 16 con stituting feet which contact directly with the base B and are suitably anchored thereto, as at 17.
The lower or discharge end portion of the pipe 8 is provided with an internal valve seat 18 with which coacts the inwardly opening valve member 19, herein disclosed as a ball, said valve member 19 being normally maintained in closed position by its own weight plus the weight of the water thereon.
The bottom of the tank or container T is provided with an upstanding bracket 20 in radial alignment with the applied pipe 8 and with which bracket is pivotally connected a vertically swinging arm 22 extending beyond opposite sides of the bracket. One end portion of the arm 22 is provided with an upstanding lug 23 which, upon upward swinging movement of said end portion of the arm is adapted to enter the lower. end of the pipe 8 and contact with the valve member or ball 19 and move the same inwardly of said pipe 8 into open position.
The opposite end portion of the .arm 22 carries a float 24, said float, as the level of the liquid within the tank or container T rises, causes the end portion of th arm 22 carrying the lug 23 to move downwardly and thereby permitting the valve member or ball 19 to return to its seat to shut off the flow of water through the pipe 8 into the tank or container T. The portion of the arm 22 carrying the float 24: is of a length greater than the opposite portion carrying the lug 23 so that the weight of said first named end 7 portion of the arm 22 plus the weight of the float 24 will cause the end portion of the arm 22 carrying the lug 23 to move upward- 1y to unseat the valve member or ball 19 when the water level within the tank or member T lowers. device as herein disclosed, substantially a constant water level is maintained at all timeswithin the tank or container T, said control being automatic.-
.The shank or arm 11 and the eye 12 are maintained, as herein disclosed, in desired assembled relation by the nut 25 threaded upon said shank or arm 11 outwardly of I the eye 12.
' From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a drinking fountain constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience andfacility with whichit may be assembled and operated, andit will also be obvious that my invention; is susceptible of some change and modification without departing fromthe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I donot wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formatlon of the several parts herem In other words with my shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as herelnafter claimed.
I cla1m:-
l. A fountain of the class described comprising a base, a tank mounted thereon and surrounded by a trough, said lower portion of the tank and trough being in communication one with the other, a vertically disposed supply pipe having its lower end portion extending within the tank, means for holding said lower end portion of the pipe to a side wall of the tank, the outer portion of the supply pipe being provided with an outstanding shank, a supporting member mounted upon the base independently of the tank, said supporting member at a point above the tank being provided with an eye through which the shank of the supply pipe extends, and means operated by the rise and fall of the water level within the tank for controlling the flow through the supply pipe into the tank.
