UNITED STATES NELSON H. HENDERSON, SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
NOZZLE FOR DISHWASHING MACHINES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June '25, 1925. Serial No. 39,542.
This invention relates to nozzles for washing machines and the like and has for its object a nozzle by which a swirling motion is given to the fluid as it is discharged from the nozzle.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a nozzle embodying my invention, the contiguous portion of a receptacle to which the nozzle is attached and from which it receives fluid, and also a portion of the receptacle into which the nozzle discharges, being also shown.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33, Figure 1.
This nozzle comprises, generally, a pipe, a
spray head at the end of the pipe having an outlet arranged at an angle to the axis of the pipe, the pipe and head being so arranged as to give a swirling movement to the fluid passing through the nozzle, and also means as a deflector in the head for facilitating such swirling movement and giving a violent swirl thereto.
I have here shown this nozzle as applied to a washing machine of the type set forth in my application Sr. No. 698,778, filed March 12, 1924, now Patent Number 1,626,194, and the construction of the washing machine forms no part of this invention.
1 designates the nozzle which includes a conduit or pipe 2 and a head 3, the head being here shown as cylindrical in general form and having a contracted outlet 4 in one end of the cylinder and the pipe 2 being arranged tangent to or extending in a tangential direction relatively to the cylindrical head 3. The means for giving an additional swirling; movement to the water comprises a curved baffle plate 5 arranged in the head 3 opposite the end of the pipe 2 where it opens into the head, the plate being curved in such direction as to swirl the water around the inner wall of the cylindrical head 3. The contracted outlet 4 is funnel shape in its general form and the funnel or gradually contracting formation facilitates the swirling and the ejection of the fluid with great force from the nozzle onto the articles as dishes. The nozzle is arranged when in use so that the outlet 4 extends through the cover 6 of a receptacle or pan.
The nozzle is shown as connected to a tank or receptacle 2 to receive water therefrom by a ball and socket or a swivel joint 8. This receptacle or tank is here shown as a pump casing having an inlet 9 at its lower-end which is connected by a depending pipe to the vessel inwhich the dishes are placed.
10 is a pump rotor mounted on a shaft 11 within the casing 7 in alinement with the inlet 9 and below the outlet into the discharge nozzle 1. YJhen the rotor is actuated, water is drawn from the pan in which the dishes are arranged and is discharged from the pump through the nozzle and spray head back into the pan. The construction of the receptacle 7, pump 10 etc, forms no part of this invention.
There are preferably two spray nozzles, but as both are alike in construction, description of one is thought to be suflicient, the nozzles being arranged diametrically opposite each other on the receptacle 7 As here shown each nozzle is secured to the receptacle by means of a tie rod 12 arranged in the receptacle and extending into the nozzle 3 through the entrance end thereof and means within the receptacle for securing the inner end of the tie rod. The tie rod as here shown threads into the nozzle, is arranged concentric with the swivel joint 8 and is secured at its inner end to one end of a bow shaped spring 13, the other end of which is connected to the tie rod 12 for the other nozzle. This bow shaped spring 13 extends around the shaft 11 and the bearing therefor.
WVhat I claim is: 1
A discharge pipe for dish washers and the like comprising a feed pipe and a spray head at one end of the pipe, the spray head being substantially cylindrical and closed at one end and having an outlet at its other end, the feed pipe being arranged tangential to the cylindrical spray head near the closed end thereof and extending toward the inner face of the closed end in a plane which cuts the axis of the head at an oblique angle, and a deflector extending into the spray head from the end of the feed pipe to cause the fluid to have a swirling motion, the oblique and tangential arrangement of the feed pipe relatively to the spray head causes the fluid to strike the inner face of the closed end of the spray head and the direction thereof to be reversed, thereby converting some of the velocity energy of the fluid into pressure en-
