WATER-COULED FUR-NACE ROLLER.
Application le Januaiy My invention relates to that class et' devices for cooling rotating members used in tur naces, or other heated environment. More particularly, it is directed to means tor cooling rolls used in furnaces, such as charging rolls in metal treating furnaces.
Et is common to provide for the cooling of such rolls by nialiing them hollow and passing water therethrough. A `defect of such schemes is due to the fact that steam and other gases are liberated and trapped in the upper part ot' the roll. `rWhile there may be a continuous circulation of the water, the gases remain in the roll, frequently occupyinga substantial space, with the result that unless the roll is constantly rotated the metal thereof is burned, which obviously is a serious disadvantage.
The purpose of my invention is to provide means for eiiecting the constant escape ot steam and gases in Watencooled rolls.
My invention consists essentially of a def vice for entrapping steam and gases liberated in Water-cooled rolls and for removing such gases by the rotation ot the roll.
Referring to the accompanying `drawings for a speeilic embodiment ot' this invcntifiin:
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section ot' the roll and the gas and Water separation device, the roll being shown in position ior end charging a furnace;

Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse vertical ser tions, on a larger scale, through the water and gas separating device, taken through the two annular channels of this device.
In the end et furnace 1 is mounted the hollow charging roll 2, rotatably carried in cylindrical bearings 3 and turned by means ol gear l fixed thereto and meshing with gear il on shaft 5, operated from a suitable source ot' power through 4the intermediary of bevel gearing 6 and shaft .7.
Bolted tothe open end of roll 2 is the chambered casing 8, covering which is casing 9, open at the bottom 10. Centrally of casing 8 and axially of the roll 2 is lug 11 having a passage 12 axially thereof. This passage is continuous With passageway 13 of" tube 14 which is mounted at one end in the shouldered recess 15 of lug 11, and at the other end,

in the recessed lug 1G axially disposed at the other end ot the roll. This tube opens into chamber 1 7 ot' the roll through openings 18 ol lug 16.
rlhe cylindrical bearing 3 is cooled bymeans oi" Water fed thereto through pipe 19 which enters and passes through the annular chamber 20, then out through pipe 22, flowing thence through stulling box 23 through the passageway 12 ot' lug 15, and then through tube 14 into chamber 1T to cool the same.
Between lug 1l and the inner Wall 2li of member 8 are chambers and 26 communieating with chamber 1"? ot the roll, and separated from each other by partitions 27. These chambers communicate with annular channels 28 and 29 by means or' ducts 30 and 31 respectively, the ducts communicating with one annular channel being to one side ol lug l1 uhile the ducts communicating with the second annular channel are on the opposite side of this lug.
Channel 28 discharges to the outside ol member 8 at 32 While channel 29 opens at 33, these two openings being on opposite sides 0:( member 8.
As indicated in the drawings, both ends el any particular channel are on the same side of 'the casing. it should be noted that. the chambers which discharge into a particular channel do so at the inner end portions of t-he channel. For example, opening 32 is on the same side as the duct entering the inner end ol channel 2S both ducts 30 entering the portions ol channel 28, nearest the inner cud.
Beneath casing 8 is drain trough 3l.
The operation ol the device is more or less obvious. Roll 2 is cooled by water entering chamber 17 from pipe or lube 14, which then passes through chamber 17 to chambers 25 and 26 and thence through ducts 30 and 31, channels 2S and 29 and out through openings 32 and 33 into the drain trough.
Obviously the steam and gases rise to the top of the roll and pass therefrom into chambers 25 and 2G as, by rotation of the roll, one after the other comes into the topmost position, passing' through the ducts into the channels. As the gases and steam are always at the top ot the casing it is obvious that the rota` tion indicated by the arrows in Figs. Ll and 5 will cause the entrapped gases to occupy progressively dillerent positions ot the channels until the enit openings or the channels reach the uppermost position when they will escape into casing 9, and thence to the atmosphere.
iVhile have Shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those Skilled in the art that it is not eo limited, but ie euiceptiliile of various other changes and modilicationa without departing` from the spirit ther-cot, and I desire, therefore, that only such limita tions shall be placed thereupon as are impoi d by the prior art or as are epeciticalij-,f eet toi-th in the appended claims.
Having described my invention what i desire to claim is as lollowe:
l. ln combination with Water-cooled roli, means for receiving and entrapping eteain and gases liberated from the vater and menne effective upon the rotation oi th roll to per-- mit the escape thereof.
A device tor removing,` steam and gra from a water-cooled roll, comprising;v a et L attached thereto, spaces Within euch eating; effective upon rotation et the roll to collect and entrap the steam and gasee, and Sageivay Within such device eilective upon rotation ot the roll to permit their escape.
In combination With a Water-cooled roll, chambers communicating with the interior ot the roll, a passageway open to the outside communicating with the chambers, whereby rotation et the roll entraps the steam and gases in the passageway and further rotation permits them to escape.

In combination with a Water-cooled roll, a device attached to the open end ot the roll, chambers in such device disposed about Athe axes ot the roll and communieating` With the interior thereof, an annular channel communica-ting with the chambers, this channel inname 'opening at one end to the outside, whereby rotation oi the roll entraps the steam and gas in the channel and further rotation liberates them through the outside openii Y.
