Description
uNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN s. oHEsNU'I, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LrTINe-JACK.-
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 17,024, dated .Apri-1 To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. CHESNU'I, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement on a machine for lifting and raising heavy weights, such as carriages and similar articles, called a Lifting-J ack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures l, 2, 3, are perspective views of the improved jack Fig. l, is a lateral view of the improved jack in operating order. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal or front View and Fig. 3 is a vertical and transverse view of the same. v
Letter A, Fig. l, is a horizontal elliptic base or platform uponwhich the machine stands.
Letter B Fig. l, is a perpendicular standard having a longitudinal opening near the upper end where the lever C, passes through it, and pierced transversely with bolt holes to form a fulcrum for the lever C.
Letter C, Fig. 1, is a lever which passes through the opening in the standard B, to which it is attached by a bolt to form the fulcrum f, andvextends the weight point to w; this lever has ratchet teeth r, t, upon its upper edge or surface upon whicha bracket D falls, and holds the lever in proper-position when the weight is suspended.
Letter D, Fig. l, is a bracket attached by a joint to the upper end of the standard B, at Z) with the lower end extended to and rest ing on the ratchet teeth, and holds the lever C firmly in posit-ion when the weight is raised. It has an opening in it near the lower end ci through which the thumb lever E passes at d.
Letter E, Fig. l, is a thumb lever with its fulcrum attached to lever C at g; it extends the long arm over the ratchet teeth through the opening in the bracket D at d, and its power end e tol the hand of the operator by depressing which with the thumb at e the long arm rises against D at d and detaches it from the ratchet teeth.
The jack i as improved by my inven- I tions, viz; the ratchet teeth r, thumb lever E, and bracket D, combined as set forth; it may be constructed in whole or part of wood, iron or other suitable material; it is used for the purposes of its invention in the following manner viz: The operator places the jack standing on its base A near the weight to be raised, holding the power end of the lever C in his hand; with his thumb he depresses the thumb lever E at e which raises the long arm against the bracket D at d, and detaches it from the ratchet teeth; he then elevates the lever C,and places the weight point fw, under the weight to be raised, then removes his thumb from the thumb lever at e which causes the bracket D to fall on the ratchet teeth; the arm of the lever C is forced downward toward the base A which causes the weight w with the weight upon it to rise while the bracket D, follows on the ratchet teeth, and holds the lever C firmly in position when the weight is at a proper elevation; when the weight is to be lowered the operator depresses the thumb lever E, at e as before stated which causes the long arm to rise against the bracket D at d, and detaches it, the arm of the lever C is elevated and the weight at the weight point w sinks down to the proper position.
The combination and arrangement of the several parts of the improved jack are such that one person can perform with ease and facility, and with one hand, all the operations for which it is intended, constructed substantially in the manner, and for the purposes as herein set forth and described.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In combination with the rack lever C, and the bracket D, the thumb lever E, so that the user may, with one and the same hand, work the jack, and throw the bracket in and out of gear with the rack at pleasure, the whole being combined in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
JOHN S. CHESNUT.
