AIR-CGNTBJOL MECHANISM FOR PIlTCl-ING MACHNES.
Application filed November 4, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic multiple spacing-punches, more particularly to improvements in the multiple punch shown and described in an earlier Patent No. 833,811, issued October 23, 1906, to Lars H. Vold, one of the co-inventors of the present invention.
The patent referred to covers a multiple punch in which the `work is auton'iatically moved to certain desired intervals of space and also means for controlling a series of gagblocks cooperating with punches to render the desired punch or punches operative in acting upon the Work. rihe automatic regulation of moving` the work and controlling the gag-blocks is obtained by pneumatic actions controlled by or responsive to a perforated paper sheet that is fed through the machine. Vlhe punch action is produced by a cam actuated lever acting upon a punch bar and the movement of the paper sheet in passing through the machine for auton'iat-ically spacing the VWork and controlling the is regulated by a separate cam designed to coordinate the function of feeding the paper through the machine with the operating cycle of the punch bar.
The cam operated punch has in recent years been superseded by the eccentric type which imparts a uniform reciprocatory movement to the punch bar, and it is an object of the present invention to adapt the pneumatic ac ons for spacing the work and controlling the punch to the eccentric type of punch.
mother objectof` the invention is 4to provino separate and independent means for controlling the work,` advancing r spacing mechanism and the control mechanism of a sci-ics ot punch to render said mechanisms severally operative during a predetermined period of the operating cycle of the punch bar member.
Another object of the invention is to provide tho longest` possible time for the operation of the punch control mechanism and the shortest possible time for the operation of the wor-lt spacing mechanism to eliminate interference of the control mechanism with the movable elements of the machine with which they cooperate.
Another object of the invention is to design the control mechanism referred to above to adapt it to eccent-rically operated punch bars Withnoi necessitating any substantial cl'lii Serial No. 148,192.
in the .machine disclosed in the aforementioned patent.
In the accompanying drawings constitut-` ing a part hereof and in which like reference characters designate like parts, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of a portion of an automatic multiple punch embodying the principles of this invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of an improved paper tower; Figs. 3, i and 5 are views in elevation of por tions of the paper tower mechanism; Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view partially in elevation of the paper tower taken along the lines VIVL of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is an end elevational vien7 ot the paper tower shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 8 is a sectional view of a pair of air boxes cooperating With the paper tower mechanism; and Figs. 9., 10, 11, 12 and 13 are dia grams graphically illustrating the rela-tive functions of the cam actuated punch bar and the eccentrcally operated punch bar with their respective paper tower mechanisms to aid in the description and understanding of the present invention, To aid in the description of they invention, only so much of the punch has been illustrated as is necessary for a full understanding of the improvements herein described and claimed.
Referring to Fig. 1 the reference numeral. 1 designates a punch bar connected to an eccentric by means of a link 2 and provided with a plurality of punch-holders 3 for carrying punches 4, the punch holders being adjustably secured to the reciprocating punch bar 1. rllhe punch holders are respectively provided with cylinders 5 carrying'pistons 6 having gag-blocks 7 secured to gone end thereof which coope ate With the stems of the punches 4 to lock them in their sockets when a. source of pressure such as compressed air is applied to the ends of the cylinders 5 as by means of tubes 8 comi'nunicat-ing by pipe lines 9 with a pair of air boxes 10 of the paper tower. When the air pressure is cut oft' from the cylinders 5 the latter are automatically exhausted to the atmosphere, in a manner hereinafter described, so that the blocks 7 are Withdrawn from the punches by action of springs it leaving the punches free to move vertically in their sockets Without any restraint upon the operation of the punch bar 1. i
The punches 4C cooperate with a series of dies 11 secured to a punch bioclr 12 mount-ed mechanism that is fully described in the jo aforementioned patentV and in our copending V application Serial No. 113,152 filed June 2, j 1926. The carrier 14 is provided on-its under-l side with rack teeth 16 cooperating with a Vgear wheel 17 mounted on the feed shaft 18 upon which ratchet wheels 19 and bevel gears,
not shown, are'mounted.
The feed shaft 18 is actuated by ratchet i pawls 2O for intermittent-ly advancing the work carrier14'inyaccordance with the action of the punch bar 1, the pawls20 being carried by a swing frame 21 that is connected v by Va link 22 to a block lThe block 23 is movably mounted in a curved guideway of arockerframe 25v which issupported by l* u an arm 25a and is pivotally connected at 26V to a link 27 pivoted at 28'to a crank pin carried by cani. 46 lmounted on shaft 29. rlhe shaft 29 is rotated through a bevel gear connection 30 `with a-connectingshaft v31 that is actuated bythe eccentric drive shaft 32 of thepunchA bar the (rear ratio bein' maintained. at oneto-one to provide the same speedof rotation of vthe shaft 29 to that ofthe eccentric shaft`32.
Y having an offsetportion which engages al The block 2301i" therocker frame 25 is further connected by a link 33 to aj slide bar 34 pair of jaws 36 and 37 of a pair of floating tongs 38 Vand-39 respectively. The movement of the member 35 is limited to the space be tween the jaws 36 and 37 and this movement determines the position of the block 23 in the slot "24 which controls the swinging movement of the ratchet actuating frame 21. TheY inovementof theaws is regulated by the separating or closing of the tongs 38 and 3 Y whichjcooperate by vii'tue of a libkconnection 40 and the tongs are actuated byfvirtue of the connection of the tong 38 through a link 41 tothe lower portion of the swing frame 25. The closingposition ofthe jaws 36 and 37 Vis regulated by a plurality of spacing pins 42 shown in dotted lines which are independently actuated by air pressure from the paperV tower 'enerall desiofnated at 43 to be forced 7 y a; i downwardly 1n the path of movement of the jaws, the particular spacing pin forced down by the `paper tower'determining the closing position of the jaws 36 and 37 and incidentally hxingthe position of the block 23. As
shown in Fig.18, spacing pins 42 are enlarged atene end to form a `piston which moves in a cylinder formed 1n the jaw guideblock, and
` a'spring 42a normally retains the pin in rees p tracted or inoperative position. When air is supplied through pipes 52 by the actionot' thev paperv tower cam 46 carried by the shaft 29,
the follower being connected through the lever'47 and the link 48 to a bell crank 49 which is `associated with the paper tower in a manner as will be hereinafter explained.
The gag blocksandspacingpins 7 and '42, respectively, are operated by air pressure leading from the paper tower 43, Fig. 6, which comprises stationary cylinder V50 having a plurality lof' orilices 51 communicating through pipes 52with the air boxes 10 and air pins 42, Figs. 1 and 8. Thestationaryf,
cylinder is of semi-cylindrical shape to provide a contacting surface for a paper sheet 53 which isunreeled from a drumV 54 and wound Von a drum 55, the' drum 55 beingfrictionally ccnnected'by a. gear train 56, Fig; 2,
'to shaft 59. rlfhe sheet 53 is provided with perforations thatregister with projections 57, Fig. 7, of a pair-of'guide wheels 58V for purpose of providing proper alignment of the'recorded perforationsin the paper with the orifices 51 of the stationary1 cylinYAY der. The spacingV or'guide wheels 58 are mounted on lthe shaft59 which has a ratchet wheel 60 secured thereto and is adapted VtoV rotate therewith, the ratchet wheel being actuatedby a pawl 61thatis pivoted at 62 to a ,lever 63 `which is movable between apair of j adjustable stops '64 and 65 for the purpose of limitingthe throw of the pawl 61 Vwhich determines the rotative movement of ratchet wheel 60 and consequentlyV the move# ment of the paper sheet 53 over the stationary cylinder 50. 'The pawl61 connected by a link 66 to the arm 67 lof a bell crank 49 whichis connected by the link 48 to the cam follower {l5/of the paper tower cam 46, Fig. 1. The link 66 is connected to the arm 67 of the bell crank49V by engagement of the latter between a collar68, spaced on the link 66 by a spring 69 and' nut 70 secured to the end of the link 66. Another arm 71 of the bell crank 49 is secured by a pin 72 in aslot 73 of a link 74 that is provided with a notched portion 75 for engaging trunnions'76 of a hand lever 7 7.
The link 74j is provided with a collar or the a coil spring 80, Fig. 7. The link 74 may be pulled out of contact with the trunnions V2' 6 of the lever 77 andpermit the latter to be. raised about its pivot 81. The lever 77 All provided with adjustable stops 82 and 82a that cooperate respectively with valve stems 88 and 84, Figs. 2 and 6, of valves 85 and 86 connected to a source of pressure such as compressed air which is conducted to the valves through the pipe 87, Fig. 7.
Relerrin@ to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, valves 85 and 86 are disposed in a pressure bar 88, which is formed with an arm 91a and provided with a plurality of orifices 89 and 90, these latter being grouped into fields, as shown in Fig. 5. Arm 91a is provided with a longitudinal bore 110 which extends troni a hollow shaft 111 to valve 85, and another passage 112 extends from that valve to valve 86. Fluid pressure, such as compressed air, is supplied to the valves through a pipe 87 connected to hollow shaft 111. l/ Vlien valves 85 and 86 are opened air is supplied to oriiice field 90 through a duct 91 connected to valve 85. and to held 89 through a duct 92 connected to valve 86, ducts 91 and 92 not be ing in communication with one another. Valve 85 and orilice lield 90 control blocks 7, and valve 86 with held 89 controls air pins 42. Downward movement ot lever 77V about its pivot 81 will open valves 85 and 86 through contact oli stops 82 and 82a with valve stems 83 and 84, respectively. These stops may loe adjusted to open the valves in any predetermined relation. ln the preferred practice ot the invention, the stops are adjusted to open valve 85 first, andva-lve 86 is not opened until lever 77 has moved to a lower position. Thus separate and adjustable control of the gag blocks and air pins is provided. The groups or fields of oritices 89 and 90 ot' the air clamp bar 88 are adapted to register with oritice's 5l of the stationaryT paper tower cylinder 50 as shown in Fig. G, the paper sheet 58 passing therebetween, so that when communication established between the source ot pressure leading to the respective lields `89 and 90 the orifices in the paper sheet 58 corresponding with any ot the orifices in the groups 89 and 90 will permit the passage of air therethrough into the oi'iiices 5l of the stationary cylinder and thence to the pipes 52 leading to the air boxes and to the spacing pins 42 of the spacing mechanism to operate the gag-blocls` and the spacing pins 42 as the case may be.
Although the operation oit the paper tower is automatically controlled through the paper tower cam 46 the paper sheet 58 may be advanced b-y hand by lifting the lever 77 alter it has been d'sengaged from the linlr T 4 and the pawl 81 may then be lifted out ot engagement with the ratchet wheel and held in this position by a dog 93 which is adapted to engage a shoulder 94 ot the pawl 61 to hold it. against a stop 95.
The paper tower is operated through the bell crank 49 in the following manner. rlhe position ot the g l Fig. 7 represents the period et punching oit paper tower as illustrated in the material with air pressure on the blocks and the air pins 42. During the period ot shitting the paper sheet 53 as actuated by the cani 46, reverse action of the lever 49 will slack up on the link 7 4. The lever 77 will be lifted by action of the spring 80. The valve stems 88 and 84 will close, shutting oft' air pressure to the pilot valves and air pins 100 and 42 respectively. Further motion will litt air clamp bar 88 ott the cylinder 50 eX'- hausting pilot valves 100 and air pin 42 per initting them to return by spring pressure. During this period the spring 69 is under compression and when closed the link 66 will bottoni in lever end 67 and further swinging ot' the lever 49 will take the pawl 61 oli the ratchet wheel 60 bringing the pawl against the stop 95. Further movement of the lever 67 will swing the whole system until the lever 88 strikes on stop 64. This is the exact position ot the system tor the pawl 61 to enga-ge the next tooth of the ratchet wheel 60. Duringl this period the pin 72 moves vtreely in slot 7 Forward movement of the lever 49 operates to seat pawl 61 on the ratchet wheel 60. i Further movement of the lever 49 will swing the Vsystem until the lever 68 strikes on the stop taking the ratchet wheel 60 with it thus bringing the paper sheet 58 to a new position. During this period the pin .7 2 contacts iii the lower end ot slot 78. Further movement will force down the lever 77 bring'- ing the clamp bar 88 down on cylinder The valves 85 Vand 86 will be opened successively in the manner previously explained and air pressure is again on pilot valves and air pins 100 and 42. Thevalve cycle is explained in detail in relation to the operation of the eccentric in connection with Fig. 12. During the last period the spring 69 is compressed and the paper tower is again at the starting point which is the position shown in Fig. 7.
Referring to Fig. 8 the air boxes comprise a plurality ot pilot valves 100 biased by coil springs 101. the valves closing the openings of pipes 52 leadingtrom the stationary cylinder 50 of the paper tower. Associated with the pilot valves are Operating valves 102 and exhaust valves 108 which respectively coinniunicate with an air passage 104 leading to the pipes 9 oi the bloclr cylinders 5. The pilot valves 100 are pivoted to levers 105 that are centrally pivoted at 106 and provided with curved faces 107 that engage the stems ot the valves 102 and 108 so that for a certain position ot' the pilot valve 100, caused by air pressure passing through the, paper tower` the operating valve 102 will be opened and the exhaust valve 108 closed whereby air presk sure is communicated to the gag-blocks 7 and when the pressure in the pipes 52 leading from the paper tower is released coil springs 101 will return the pilot valves to their closed positionin which position the lever 105 will permit the operating valve 102 te close and open the exhaust valve103 thereby establishlng communication of thegag-block cylinders V with the atmosphere `in which case the f manner of their function in the cam, drivenV 2o sure hy orifices occurring f y per towerniechanism in accordance with punches 4; will be free to sldevertically in their sockets. There 1s pilot7 an operating and an exhaust valve for each gagiblock cylinder so thatthey are separately controlled by their correspondingor-idees in t-he paper tower which is opened to a source of air prest 1n the paper sheet passingY through the paper tower. i
f Thevoperatibn of the paper tower, will be v more readily understood in connection with the diagrams shown m Figs. 9 to 13 inclusive.
Figs. 9 and 10 are diagrams graphically illus-r trating the operation 'of the reciprocating punch barand the paper tower for rendering theygags and spacing pins operative in the type of machine described in the patent rev feried'to above', and 11, 12 and 13 illusg trate the ogierating characteristics of the' eccentrically driven'punch bar andthe new pa- 'the present 'invent-ion.

The cam follower n as shown in Fig. 10 is at the Zero position-of the cam and the straight portion of the line B'beginning with Zero to 130O designates the plain cylindrical surface of the cam which the y eriod during which the punch bar is operative in acting upon themateriah the follower whenpassing over the remaining portion of the cam will function to operate Vthe na ser tower mechanism so that the ja Jer is shifted at 225 and continu-cs to move thro'nglrthe paper tower during `the subsequent rotation of thecam up to 310", at which time vthe airpressure-is on to simultaneously operate the gags and the airpins of the spacing mechanism.
As shownin Figs. 9 and 10 thefunct-lons of the punchbar operating cam and the paper tower operating camare coordinated so that the paper tower mechanism is inoperative during the working portion of the operating cycle of the punch bar cam and the latter is out of operatingcontact with the punch har- Vduringv the operations ofthe paper tower line is a perfect sine curve which Lrepresents a uniform"rcciprocatory movement ofthe punch bar. Theline D in Fig. 12 graphical ly illustrates the cam function as in Fig. 10 and is similar to line B of Fig. 10, excepting that-.the gag and spacing pin operations rare separated, the air pressure Abeing applied to' the at 2900 of rotation ofthel cam and subsequently to the air pins at 340 of rotation, so that independent sources of air pressure renderthe gag blocks andl the spacing .pins operative at 29.0 and 340 respectively atwhich points onthe cam the stops 82 and "82 Figs.` 2,76 and 7 adjusted in the manner previously explained successively contact vwith valve stems 83and84 to openthevvalves 85 and 86 of the paper tower, where in the, old form of cam driveA air pressurewas simultaneously applied to the gags and spacing pins at 310o through `a singlevalve. n-'the new ype of paper tower and control or regulatinfr cam the longest Apossible `period of time is available for theV operation ofthe gag blocks and- .a rela-tivelyv shortv periodV of time `for the operation ofthe spacing Vpins which is desirable andnecessary on account ofthe continuous motion of the punchV bar as effected bythe veccentric driveY over that of the early camdrive in which therewas a long dwell.; y f
` In F ig'. 13' the line E graphically illustrates the opening and closing of the tongs which control the position ofthe bloelr23 in the slotA 24l of the swingV frame,V the movement of which determines the throwr ofthe ratchet pawl 20 that engages theV ratchet wheel ofA the feed shaft and comparing the line F. withline D of Fig. 12 it will `beseen that there is no interference in VVVthe.operruion of thespacing pins in-brirnging themzin the line of travel of the jai-ws36 and 37 on the tongs38 and 39. Vleginning at zero the gradual drop of the line E for 180 designatesthe 'closing Voffthe tongs'38 and 39 which sets the new spacing which is subsequently .effected through; the ratcheting mechanism onV theA feedshaft 18 andfrom 180?" to 360 the tongs' are Aopening and the spacing pawls of jtlie ratchet wheels are advancing to space n,
terial. it 3400, as indicated in Fig. l2, the
air pressure from the paper tower mecha-` nism forces the spacing pins 42downwar-dly in the path of travel oit the jaws 36 and 37 and as this is the wide open position of the tongs 38 and 39 no interference will be met with by the pins d2.
rlllhe conduits or pipes leading from the paper tower to the punch gags are of considerable length being twenty feet or over and a sulhcient lapse oit' time is necessary in the operation oi` the to permit air pressure passing from the tower to the gags long beit'orc the spacing pins need to be actuated.
lt is evident :from the foregoing description or' this invention that the improvements disclosed therein permit the adaptation of the paper tower mechanism for controlling the punches and the spacing of the materials to the eccentric driven type of punching presses, and it is further evident that the present invention provides a positive and eliicient control and regulation of the punch and material spacing operations.
lt is further obvious that variationsmay be made in the arrangement ofA the several cooperating parts of the paper tower, spacing mechanism and the punch mechanism without departing from the principles herein set forth.
