Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,188., dated November 23, 1875; application filed May 11, 1875.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a compact, convenient, and easily portable case for fishing-rods.

Cases for fishing-rods now in use are generally made of leather, cloth, or other material of a flexible nature. Such cases are neither f water-proof, nor do they furnish any protection from breakage on the long and rough journeys to which they are exposed.l

My device is constructed as follows: For the walls oi the case I prefer to use some light wood. 4In two pieces of the required length, having each a plane flat surface, are made two semicircular grooves of the same diameter. These pieceslare then glued together, so as to form a circular tube throughout the length, and the exterior is then turned in a lathe to the form shown in Fig. 2, leaving theY walls of the proper thickness-z'. c., from oneeighth to one-quarter of an inch, according to the size of the case to be made. This tube is then covered with canvas or4 rubber cloth, or other suitable material, the same being secured byY Water-proof cement or glue, while the ends of the covering are kept in place by V means of the caps c and d at either end, which lmay be screwed upon or cemented to the ends of the case. The cap on the upper end has a lid or cover, m, which may be screwed on or off, a hole, f, being made in the knob e through which a lever may be introducedV to assist in the removal. The case is further strengthened by metallic rings placed around the case at the proper intervals. (See Fig. l.) The case is lined Within with some suitable cloth or material to keep the joints of the rod from being scratched or chafed. A yielding bottom, fn, is placed upon the ybottom of the lower cap, upon a spring, (see Fig. 6,) to prevent motion by pressing the upper ends of the joints of the rod against the lid. i

Figs. 4 and 5 show separating devices q s, which may be placed in the case, `if desired, to further prevent the motion of or any injury to the parts `ot the rod while in the case. Each consists of a form of wood, india-rubber, or other light material-that shown in Fig. 4, q. having openings l1. h in its outer surface, which, with the walls of the case, form separate receptacles for all the parts ofthe rod, while in the other, s, the opening in the een# ter, which is Jfilled with a rubber tube, K, con-` nects with other openings, in which the parts of the rod are placed and held apart bythe pressure of the elastic tube.

The compartment for the reel (shown in Fig. 3) may be placed either at the top or bottom ofthe case.

The case thus constructed is capable ot bearing very hard usage, is water-proof, and very portable. The case may be made of suitable size to receive a number of rods and of various lengths.

A sponge may be substituted for the springbottom and spring shown in Fig. 6.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
