Description

I E W. SMITH TOOL HANDLE EXTRAGTOR Filed Oct. 5, 1.927
Inventor Attorngy Patented Feb, 12, 1929.
EDGAR WARREN smrrn, or xnnmi, NEW mimics-innit;
- TOOL-H41? DLE EXTRACTOR.
Application filed October 3, .1927. Serial No. 223,695.
My invention relates to improvements in tool handle extractors, and the purpose of the same is to facilitate the removal of worn or broken handles from tool heads.
My device is particularly useful for quickly removing handles from axes where heretofore considerable effort and exertion was required.
In lumber camps and in other places where axes are used, considerable time is spent in removing the handles from the ax heads. Not only is my extractor very useful for removing ax heads, but it is equally effective in re like numerals designate like tangular shaped plate 1 is moving pick handles, hammer handles, and in fact all tool handles, the-tool head of which being wedged on the handle in the usual well known manner. An object of my invention'is to provide such a tool handle extractor which will be simple in construction to allow a. low cost of but at the same time providing for the purpose desired, and which in the construction will be-very durable.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as my invention is better understood fromithe specification and claims to follow.
In the drawing z---' lgure 1 represents a side elevation, showing my improved handle extractor with a tool and handle in position, with respect thereto.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device, as
represented in Fig. 1, and p Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate and threaded follower forming part of my invention.
For a more detailed description of my invention, I now refer to the drawings, in which parts. The recformed with a threaded opening through approximately the center of the same. Openings 2 formed through the plates substantially inwardly from the four corners thereof, are adapted to have projected upwardly therethrough, the threaded blade portion 3 of a pair of U- shaped supporting members 4:. The threaded ortions of the U-shaped supporting-memers are provided with nuts 5 threaded thereon, adapted to bear on the top surface of the to which it may -wi th of same, while the base portion thereof, is
- screwed to plate to adapt theslippage of the leg members of the U-shaped parts downwardly through the openings therein.
The centrally screw 6, at the lower end of which is secured a follower plate 7, which may be of suitable shape in construction, to conform to the work be applied. The upper end of the screw is provided with a squared enlargement 8.
An Lshaped bracket member 9 is formed suitable openings in the vertical extent securely riveted or fastened by other means in this plate 1. y i
As is clearly shown in Fig.- 1 of the drawings, in the operation of extracting an ax handle from the ax head, the porting members 4 are removed from associ ation with the plates. The ax' head designated at 10 is placed between the leg members of the respectlve supporting members so that the handle thereof will extend downwardly as shown.
The projecting portions of the ax head are allowed to rest onthe bight portion of said U-shaped part. The screw section is then position as shown in Fig. 1, and the threaded legs of the sup rt are then threaded upwardlythroug'h t eir respective located threaded opening in the plate has threaded therein a follower U-shaped supopenings in the plate, the nuts 5 are then.
threaded on the endportions of the legs to prevent the support from slipping downwardly from its secured position in respect to the plate.
gainst the end of the handle, located in the head of the tool. screw downwardly through the late, the follower 7 will force the handle rom its position in a tool head, The device may be secured to a wall or other structure by the L- shaped bracket 9. Having thus described I claim as new is In a tool handle extractor comprising a plate, a pair of U-shaped members, said U- shaped members havin portions threaded, the t readed end of said U-shaped members adapted or slid-' able disposition through openings in said my invention, what By screwing the followerv their respective end ortions plate, nuts adapted to be threaded on the the plate between the U-shaped members, and threaded end portions of the U-shaped mema head on one end of the bolt for engagement bers for drawing the bight portions of the with the end of the tool handle located within 10 members toward the plate for securing a tool the tool head for extracting the same.
5 head between the respective bight portions In testimony Whereor- I aflix my signature. of the U-shaped members, and the adjacent side of the plate, a bolt threadable through EDGAR WARREN SMITH.
