' This invention aims to provide a novel means whereby a bed panmay be made available for invalids, and bedridden persons who cannot arise readily from a bed, it being possible to keep the bed in a clean and sanitary condition, notwithstanding the fact that a bed pan is embodied in it. i

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains. 7

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description procoeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangementot parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described 7 and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a flexible water-proof cover, which, as a whole, is designated by the numeral 1. The cover '1 includes a base piece 2 having upstanding transverse walls 3, the walls 3 and the base piece 2 forming a recess 1 for the bed pan, as seen, for instance, in Figures 4 and 2. The side walls 3 are connected to top pieces 5 having depending end members 6 which are joined to the endedges of the walls 3. In order to avoid raw edges, the ends of the base 2 are turned under, as shown at 7 to form wings, and these wings are extended, in underlying relation, as shown at 8 in Figures 4 and 7, along the lower edges of the end members 3 of the cover.

A bed pan 15, preferably although not necessarily made of metal, is located in the recess at and rests on" the base piece 2 V01? theicover, the construction being such that the bedpan, maybe pulled out endwise, for cleaning, or otherwise. Around its upper edge, the'bedpan 15 has an outstanding flange 16. The flange 16 is provided at the ends of the bed pan 15, with openings 17 adapted to be engaged by flexible elements 18, whereby the bed pan may be secured in place, the flexible elements 18 being adapted to be tied around the side rails of the bed, around the springs, or around any other parts of the bed (not shown) which are accessible for the purpose specified. 1

A lid 19 rests on the bed pan 15. The lid 19 of the bed pan slants downwardlytoward the center of the bed pan, as shown at.2l.

On the under surface of the bed pan lid 19,

straps 22 are secured, and thestraps 22 terminate in hooks 20 adapted to cooperate with the flange 16 on the bed pan 15, the construction being such that the lid 19 can be slid endwise to place on the flange 16. The top of the bed pan 15 has resiliency enough, so that the top can be located as specified, even though the top does extend downwardly a little, as shown at 21, into the bed pan 15, and below the flange 16. There are holes 23 along the longitudinal center oi the lid 19 of the bed pan 15, and through these holes, any liquid which mayfind its way upon the lid of the bed pan, will drain into the bed pan. In order to facilitate the drainage 0t material toward the holes 23 in the lid of the bed pan, the lid of the bed panis provided with corrugations 28 which discharge toward the longitudinal center of the bed pan, an observation Which Will be understood readily when Figures 5 and 3 are compared. Near to one end, the bed pan lid 19 has an opening 24, across Which extends a reinforcing cross piece 25. The opening 24 is used for defecation, when the person using the device is able to sit up on the edge of the bed. TV hen however, defecation must take place Whilst the operator is lying prone, then, recourse is had to an opening 26 formed in the lid 19 of the bed pan, there being a reinforcing cross piece 27 on the lid, the cross piece extending transversely of the opening 26.

A pad 29 rests on the lid 19 of the bed pan and is located in the recess 4, the pad being covered with flexible Water-proof material. The pad 29 has any desired number of holes 80, through which liquid may drain upon the bed pan lid 19, and, thence, by Way of the holes 23, into the body portion of the bed pan. The pad :29 has an opening 31 which registers with the opening 2% in toe lid 19 of the bed pan. The pad 29 has an opening 32, and this opening 32, registers with the opening 26 in the lid of the bed pan. When desired, the openings 81 and 32 in the pad 29 may be closed by small pads 33, one of which is shown in detail in Figure 8, and in place in Figure 4 of the drawings. By means of separable fasteners 34 of any description, the ends of thepad 29 are connected to the end members 6 of the cover 1, the construction'being such that the pad 29 Will remain in place When the bed pan 15 is pulled out endwise for cleaning.

The general construction of the device is such that the bedridden or feeble persons Will not be inconvenienced greatly in the performance oi acts Which ordinarily make it necessary for persons to get out of bed.

What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a cover comprising a base piece and pockets, the base piece and the pockets cooperating to form a recess, supplemental mattress pieces in the pockets, main mattress pieces, devices for. connecting the main mattress pieces to the pockets, a bed pan in the recess, a lid for the bed'pan, and a pad on the lid of the bed pan and located in the recess, the pad-and the lid having registering openings 2. In a device of the class described, a cover comprising a base piece and pockets connected by the base piece, the pockets and the base piece forming a recess,mattress'members in the pockets, at bed pan in the recess, a lid for the bed pan, a pad resting on the lid, the lid and the pad having registering openings, means for connecting the ends of the bed pan to a bed, and meansfor mounting the lid on the pan for sliding movement transversely of a bed.
