The invention consists broadly in a coin chute thru which a coin is deposited and falls to an operative position in the mechanism in case the coin is of the proper denomination; operating mechanism actuated by hand lever only when a coin is in its proper position in the mechanism; means for dropping a carton of ice cream or the like from the magaz ne to a delivery chamber; means for delivering the article so dro ped; means for feeding the articles to be dropped to a deposlting position and means for rotating the magazine when the delivery tube that is being used has been em tied, together with individual devices pecidiar to the mechanism.
As shown in Figure 6, the coin will be deposlted at 1, in the chute 2 and will fall to the position as indicated by the coin 3. If the coin is smaller than the denomination that the machine is designed to be actuated b it Wlll pass out thru the slot 4 and may either be delivered into the coin box or if preferred, the slot 4 may 0 en to the exterior so the coin will be returne The coin carrier 5, which is mounted for reciprocal movement in the slide 6, has its operating end concaved as shown at 7, so as to properly engage a coin at 3 and also to hold the coin against the convexed end 8 of the delivery actuating slide 9.
When the proper coin is in position, as shown in Figure 6, and the operating handle 10, Figures 1 and 2, has been rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, the coin pressing against the concave end of the slide 9, moves it to the left so the coin will be held above the slot 11 by the concaved end of the coin carrier 5.
When the operating lever is returned to normal position, the coin carrier is likewise returned to its normal position, which allows the coin to drop thru the slot 11. It has been seen that the actuating slide is thus moved to the left, as shown in Figure 6, by the rotation of the operating handle when the proper coin has been dropped in the chute and it is this actuating slide that controls the balance of the mechanism.
The actuating slide has hinged thereto at 12, Figure 1, the oscillating shutter 13. This shutter is hinged at 14 to the link 15, which is hinged to the frame at 16, so the reciprocating movement of the slide 9 will swing t 1e shutter 13 from the position shown in Figure 1, to the position shown in Figure 2, thus unclosing the aperture 17 in the base 18.
It will be noted that the slide 9 has a lip 19 engaging with the lip 20 carried by the coin carrier 5.
Looking now at Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that the link 21 connects the crank 22 of the handle 10 to the saddle 23, carried by the plate 24, which extends from the coin carrier 5, hence when the handle 10 is turned to the left, the coin carrier 5 is moved to the left and if the proper coin has been deposited in the coin chute, the slide 9 will also be moved to the left, but if the proper coin has not been placed in the chute, the coin carrier will move to the left and the lips 19 and 20 separate, and the actuating slide 9, together with the mechanism which it actuates, will not be affected.
The quadrant arm 25 is rotatably mounted over the stud 26 and is hinged at 27 to the link 28, which in turn is hinged at 29 to the link 30, the link 30 being hinged at 31 to the base 18.
The plate 24 is hinged at 32 to the link 33, which in turn is hinged at 34 to the uadrant arm 25, hence the sliding movemento the coin carrier 5 will oscillate the quadrant arm 25.
The hinge 31, connecting the link 30 to the frame is formed by the upstanding end 35 of the arm 36 and the link 30 is rigidly connected to said upstanding end so the swinging of the link 30 will swing the arm 36. Hinged to the arm 36 at 37 is a rod 38, carrying the delivery plate 39 thereon, hence the reciprocation of the coin carrier 5 also reciprocates the delivery plate 39 in the delivery chute 40, the movement being from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2, where it is back of the aperture 17 so as to allow the article that is being delivered to drop thru this aperture into the chute 40 in front of the delivery plate 39, so its forward movement will eject the article from the chute 40.
A suitable spring 41 connecting the crank of the arm 10 to a frame member at 42, serves to return the handle and that portion of the mechanism actuated by the return of the movement of the handle to the normal position in case the operator should not return it by hand.
Looking now at Figures 1 and 8, it will be seen that the shutter 13 has a weighted trigger 43 carried thereby, which passes thru the slot in the shutter at 44. The loop 45 encircles the large end of the shutter and rests on the trigger 44, Where it projects upwardly thru the shutter at 46. If no object is resting on the shutter, the weighted end 47 of the trigger holds the trigger with that end in a lowered position and when in this position it will engage with the upper half of the fork 48, which straddles the shutter 13 and is an extension from the lever 49 hinged at 50, Figure 10, to the lever 51, which is hinged at 52 to the frame mounted saddle 53 and whose opposite end is hinged at 54 to the tell-tale 55. This tell-tale has its outer end carrying an index such as MT, so that when the tell-tale 55 is forced to the left, the index MT is displayed at the point where a coin would ordinarily be deposited, thus indicating that the machine is empty and preventing a coin being placed in the chute.
The spring 56, normally holds the tell-tale out of visible position and it can only be moved so as to display the index in the chute when the weighted end of the trigger is down and hence only when the shutter moves in a clockwise position with no weight, such as the article to be delivered, on the loop 45.
The slidable member 57, carried by the plate 24, slides in the 'uide 58 to firmly restrain the movement 0 the plate 24 to a reciprocating motion. The table 59 is mounted above the quadrant arm 25 and spaced to allow free movement of the said quadrant and has an aperture 60 thru which the article to be delivered may be passed.
The base plate 61 of the magazine is mounted on the table for rotative movement thereon and carries a plurality of tubes 62, each having longitudinal slots 63 therein.
The band 64 which passes about the tubes 62, carries a plurality of dogs 65 hinged thereto and which by gravity tend to assume a. horizontal position as shown at 66, Figure 2, but when a tube is full of containers, such. as those indicated at 67, Figures 3 and 4, the dogs are held in a substantially vertical position.
It will be seen, however, from the view shown in Figure 4, that the dog will prevent the falling of a container when in its normal position and the container will only be dropped when the dog is rotated in a counterclockwise position from the position shown in Figure 4.
The quadrant arm 25 carries a cam 68 and when the quadrant is swung in a clockwise direction by the movement of the lever 10, this cam will impinge against the tail of the dog and swing the dog in a counterclockwise direction, thus releasing the container that is held by the lip of the dog.
Now when the lever 10 returns to its normal position, the magazine will be rotated when the catch 69 carried on this cam, impinges against the dog 66 and when the tube. whose co-acting dog is held in the released position by the lip of the cam, comes over the aperture 60, the freed container is dropped thru because we have already seen that under such condition the shutter has been opened and also that the delivery plate 39 has been retracted to such a position that the container will be deposited in front of the delivery plate.
The guard rail 70 receives the dogs from the cam when the cam has resumed its normal position and holds them in avertical position so the empty tubes may be readily filled.
It will be noted that if the tubes positioned above the aperture thru which the containers are delivered, are not empty, the tail of the dog is held out of engagement with the catch 69 and hence the magazine is not rotated so that each tube will be entirely emptied before there will be a rotative ste of the magazine. This rotative step will 0? course bring a fully loaded tube in line with the discharge aperture and the magazine will not be further rotated until this next tube is entirely discharged.
In the embodiment of our invention shown herein, we have adapted it partly for the dispensing of ice cream and for that reason there is a container 71, Figure 3, provided for icing the machine and also a pan 7 2 for icing at the top of the magazine and the entire machine is enclosed with insulating walls 73 with a removable insulating cover 74 provided for filling the machine.
It will be noted that the delivery plate has suflicient stroke to ass the container entirely out thru the thicl insulated wall and the door 7 5 hinged to the wall normally closes the opening of the delivery box, which is swung open by the container itself as it is pushed out by the delivery plate.
While we have described our invention and illustrated it in one particular design, we do not wish it understood that we limit ourselves to this construction, as it is evident that the application of the invention may be varied in many ways within the scope of the following claims.
We claim:
1. In a vending machine the combination with a table a quadrant upon the table mounted for oscillation, means for oscillating the quadrant, a delivery tube, an independently pivoted shutter arranged for closing the end of the delivery tube and means connecting the shutter for movement by the quadrant for swinging said shutter to a position to uncover the end of said tube, means associated with said tube for holding units to be delivered from passin from said tube and means actuated by said quadrant for releasing one of said units on the oscillation of said quadrant.
2. In a vending machine the combination with a table a quadrant upon the table mounted for oscillation, means for oscillating the quadrant, a delivery tube, an independently pivoted shutter arranged for closing the end of the delivery tube and means connecting the shutter for movement by the quadrant for swinging said shutter to a position to uncover the end of said tube, means associated with said tube for holding units to be delivered, from passing from said tube and means actuated by said quadrant for releasing one of said units on the oscillation of said quadrant, a delivery chute positioned below said tube and adapted to receive the unit therefrom and means actuated by said quadrant for delivering the unit in said chute to an open end thereof.
3. In avending machine, the combination with a table, of a quadrant mounted for oscillatory movement thereon, a lever for oscillating said quadrant, a rotatable magazine positioned above said quadrant, a plurality of vertical tubes carried by said magazine, each of said tubes being adapted to receive a plurality of units to be delivered, means actuated by the oscillatory movement of said quadrant for releasing one of the units from one of said tubes and delivering it therefrom and delivering said units in said tube successively upon the successive manipulation of said quadrant, means for rotating said magazine when said tube that has been delivering units has become empty, bringing the next adjacent tube to a delivery position.
4. In a vending machine,
a base having delivery opening,
a a magazine rotata ly mounted and having tubes registerable with the delivery opening, a dog for each tube operable for retaining and releasing the containers, a pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery through the opening, a cam operable to actuate the dog to release acontainer and having a catch arranged to engage a dog of one of the containers when that container is empty and rotate the magazine and dispose a filled tube in delivery position, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a container when the connections are operated in one direction.
5. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery opening, a magazine rotatably mounted and having tubes registerable with the delivery opening, a dog for each tube operable for retaining and releasing the containers, a. pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery through the opening, a cam operable to actuate the dog to release a container and having a catch arranged to engage a dog of one of the containers when that container is empty and rotate the magazine and dispose a filled tube in delivery position, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a container when the connections are operated in one direction, said dogs being gravity-operable to retain a container.
6. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery opening, a magazine rotatably mounted and having tubes registerable with the delivery opening, a dog for each tube operable for retaining and releasing the containers, a pivoted shutter normallv arranged to prevent delivery through the opening. a cam operable to actuate the dog to release a container and having a catch arranged to engage a dog of one of the containers when that container is empty and rotate the magazine and dispose a filled tube in delivery position, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a container when the connections are operated in one direction, and a delivery plate and connections-between said plate and cam for causing the plate to e'ect a container, after delivery through sai delivery opening.
7. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery opening, a magazine rotatably mounted and having tubes register-able with the delivery opening, a dog for each tube operable for retaining and releasing the containers, a pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery through the opening, a cam operable to actuate the dog to release a container and having a catch arranged to engage a dog of one of the containers when that container is em ty and rotate the magazine and dispose a lled tube in delivery position, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to re lease a container when the connections are operated in one direction, and means for holding the dogs in container retaining position.
8. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery aperture therein, a table above the base rotatably mounted having a delivery aperture registerable with the base aperture, a shutter arranged to close and 0 en the delivery openings, a slide connecte to operate the shutter, a magazine comprising a series of vertical tubes fixed in spaced relation, said magazine mounted for rotation above the table to successively register the tubes with the discharge aperture, a guard rail partially circumscribing the magazine, a dog for each tube adapted to assume a horizontal position as the result of gravity and having one end extending inside and one end outside the tube and adapted when the tube is full of containers to be held by the guard rail to present an inner end as a stop engageable with the rim of a container, a quadrant having a cam arranged to trip the dog and release the containers as the slide moves in one direction.
9. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery aperture therein, a table above the base rotatably mounted having a delivery aperture registerable with the base aperture, a shutter arranged to close and open the delivery openings, a slide connected to operate the shutter, a magazine comprising a series of vertical tubes fixed in spaced relation, said magazine mounted for rotation above the table to successively register the tubes with the discharge aperture, a guard rail partially circumscribing the magazine, a do for each tube adapted to assume a horizonta l position as the result of gravity and having one end extending inside and one end outside the tube and adapted when the tube is full of containers to be held by the guard rail to present an inner end as a stop engageable with the rim of a container, a quadrant having a cam arranged to trip the dog and release the containers as the slide moves in one direction, a delivery plate, a chute in which the plate slides, connections between the slide and quadrant for swinging the quadrants when the slide is reciprocated.
10. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery opening, a magazine rotatably mounted and having tubes registerable with the delivery openin a dog for each tube for retaining and refeasing the containers, a pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery throu h the opening, a cam having a lip opera le to actuate the dog to release the container and havin a catch arranged to en age a dog for one o the containers when t at container is empty to rotate the magazine and dispose a filled tube in delivery position, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a container, and to permit the dog to assume container-retaining position, and to dispose the shutter to prevent delivery of a container.
11. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery openin a tube arranged above the opening, a dog tor the tube operable for retaining and releasing containers, a pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery from the tube through the opening, a ca. l operable to actuate the dog to release a COl tainer, and connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a contalner when the connections are operated in one direction.
12. In a vending machine a base having a delivery opening, a tube arranged above the opening, a dog or the tube operable for retainin and releasing the containers, a pivoted s utter normally arranged to prevent delivery through the opening, a cam operable to actuate the dog to release a container, connections between the shutter and cam for operating one by the other to release a container when the connections are operated in one direction, and a delivery plate and connections between said plate and cam for causing the plate to eject a container after delivery through the said opening.
13. In a vending machine, a base having a delivery opening, a tube arranged over the opening, a dog for the tube operable for retaining and releasing the containers, a pivoted shutter normally arranged to prevent delivery throu h the opening, a cam operable to actuate the 0g to release a container, connections between the shutter and the cam for operating one by the other to release a container when the connections are operated in one direction, and means for holding the dogs in container-retaining osition.
