IGNITION nEvIcn non INTERNAL-COMBUSTION niveInEs. 1
Application filed March e, 1926. Serial No. 92,755.-
This invention relates to ignition means for internal combustion engines.
It is aimed to provide-a novel type of ignition device that is particularly adapted for use in two cycle engines and wherein .the
' use of a timer or distributor is dispensed with sectional view through one of the pistons;.
' and a larger spark at smaller amperage loss produced.
The more specific objects and advantages will be pointed out or become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said draw1ngs:- I Flgure 1 15 an enlarged central vertical engines and having a piston rod 13 pivoted thereto at 1 1. I
An electrode 18 is carried one by the pis ton 12. Fastened in the top and centrally of the piston is a metallic cup 19 having diametric grooves 20 extending from the top' thereof substantially midway to the bottom. Said electrodes 18 have oppositely extending lugs 21 which removably enter and are supported in the grooves 20. A fastening element 22 is employed having an opening 23 through which the upper end of the electrode 18 extends. Within the cups, expansive springs 25 are disposed which surround the lower portions of the electrodes 18, abutting the bottoms of the cups 19 and the lugs 21, thus urging and normally maintaining the electrodes 18 extending above the top of the pistons. The upper ends of electrodes 18 are preferably dishedor concave as at 26.
An electrode 30is suitably mounted in the cylinder head to coact with the electrode 18. The electrode 30 may be carried by a sleeve erably being screw threaded to engage openings similar to those provided for ordinary spark plugs in the engine head. In order to Insulate the electrodes 30 from the attaching body 31, a sleeve 32. of porcelain is preferably arranged between them. A nut 33 is screw threaded on each electrode 80 so that the wires 33 leading from one pole of a battery 84 may be connected thereto. The other pole of the battery is grounded and includes the engine casing or block.
In operation it will be understood that with an explosive charge in the cylinder (not shown) when the piston12 approaches the endof the compression stroke the electrodes 18 and 30 are brought into proximity forming a spark gap, a sparkis produced, and
. as the explosion recedesthe piston, the spark will be prolonged until the gap between the electrodes is too great, thus producing a greater and more intense spark than can be secured from an ordinary spark plug.
, Various changes may be resorted toprovided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention. v I v I claim as my invention :f
1. An electrode device for the purpose specified comprisinga cup, a coil spring therein, an electrode in said cup urged outwardly by said spring and adapted for. coaction with another electrode, and a fastening plate at tachable to a part independently of the cup, said electrode extending through the plate and abutting the latter whereby it is held against displacement. r
2. An electrode device of the class described comprising a cup having diametric' slots, an electrode in said cup adapted for coaction with another electrode, the first electrode having arms engaging the slots, at fastening plate extending across the cup and attachable to a part independently thereof, said first electrode being fastened against displacement by the plate and extending slidably'through the plate, and an expansive spring in the cup urging the first electrode in the direction of the plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.-
VERNON e. WAGNER.
