Be it known that we, J AMEs C. DE LANE and F RANK L. DE LANEY, citizens of the specification.
Our invention relates to a controller designed particularly for use in connection with motor vehicles, and more particularly with the internal combustion motor used in .connection therewith, its principal object as hereinafter set forth.
,WVith the above mentioned and other objectsin view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, itbeing understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be re- .sorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of the preferred embodiment of our invention taken on line l-1 of Figure 8, and viewed in the direction of the arrows.

Referring more particularly to the several combustion motor.

the pump forcing the lubricant through the pipe 4 to the desired pointsto be lubricated. (Io-operating with the cylinder 1 is an igniting device or sparkplug 6 supplied with electric energy through the circuit 7 in which is mounted a battery or any form of dynamo electric machine 8 for supplying a spark for the plug 6. The controller for controlling'the ignition circuit in accordance with the variation of pressure within the lubricating feed pipe 4 is constructed as follows Within the line 4 is a T-coupling 9 into which threads a nipplelO extending from thelower end of a cup casing 11, which casing is formed on its interior with a chamber 12. The inner wall surface of the casing 11 is formed with an annular seat 13 and normally closing said casing is a cover or closing member 14, formed adjacent its peripheral edge with an annular skirt 15 for reception within-the chamber in the casing 1-1, and the lower edge of the skirt is adapted to lie in slight spaced relation to the seat 13 when the cover is in position. A threaded connection 16 between the inner wall surface of the casing 11 and the upper exterior surface of the skirt 15 provides a means for detachably securing the cover in position.
A flexible diaphram 17 retained between gaskets 18 between the seat 13 and the loweredge of the skirt 15 divides the chamber 12 into upper and lower compartments 19 and 20, the compartment 20 being open to the fluid pressurein the pipe 4, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 5 of the drawings, and the upper chamber 19 being separated and maintained apart from contact with the circulating lubricating medium. Extending upwardly centrally of the diaphragm 17 is a supporting and guide post 21,.the upper end of which is adapted for reception within the guide opening 22 in the under face of the closure member 14, andsaid post carries a suitable mounting 23 of insulating The crankshaft and connection posite respective binding posts passing through the closure member 14 and held therein within the insulating sleeves 26 by terminal and clamp nuts 27. The lower end of each binding post is provided with a tubular bore within which is mounted for longitudinal reciprocation, a contact point 28 normally forced downwardly by the spring 29 and limited in its movement by a pin 30 preferably carried by the post. The closure member 14 is provided with a normally closed filling opening 30', through which is adapted to be deposited within the upper chamber 19, a suitable" fluid such as oil for extinguishing or quenching the spark which ma be caused by the making or breaking o the between the members 28 and the ring 24, and thus preventing corrosion of these contact points. The provision of the spring held members28 ensures a uniform contact between both members and the rlng 24, and also permits of the ready moyement of the diaphragm .17 by the lubricating fluid pressure.
An auxiliary circuit 31 mounting a switch 32 connects with ignition circuit 7 at opsides of the binding posts 27 and the manual closing of the switch 32 eliminates the controlling of the motor ignition circuit by the oil pressure, and this auxiliary circuit is provided in cases where the motor oil is renewed and consequently the pressure within the line is lowered until such time as the motor has been operated for a short period and the pressure has been permitted to build up.
It will be observed that when the switch 32 is in open position, operating, the pressure in the oil line 1 will act against the diaphragm 17 and raise the same to complete the and the motor is ignition circuit through the posts 27 and ring 24, and should for any reason the oil pressure in the line 4 fail either through the failure of the ump 2 or the failure to maintain a su cient volume of oil to be acted on by the pump 2, the release of pressure on the under side of the diaphragm 17 will permit the same to drop and assume its normal position, indicated in Fi re 1, at which time the motor will automatically stop -due tothe breaking of the ignition circuit. To again start the motor, it will be necessary to close the switch 32 until such time as the pressure within the line 4 builds up sufliciently to close the ignition. circuit 7.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows A circuit controllin device eomprisin a casing formed with a ollow body provided with an annular flange near the base of its inner wall, a flanged cover provided witha skirt for threaded reception within the bod and for co-operation at its lower end wit said annular flange, a flexible diaphragm disposed transversely of the body and supported by said flange for dividing the body into two chambers, a pair ofinwardly pressed spring held contact points carried by said cover above said diaphragm, a post extended upwardly from the center-of said diaphragm, said cover provided with a guide opening within which the end of said post reciprocates, a support extended laterally on each side of said post, a contact ring carried by said support, a connection between the lower chamber and a source of fluid supply under pressure, and a packing ring incontact with opposing faces of the disk at its periphery to afford the maximum flexibility thereto for its operation.
