IMPROVEMENT BALE-BAND-TIGH TENING D EVICES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 170,054, dated November 16, 1875; application filed April 26, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OHARLEs H. CHASE, of New Orleans, Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Device for Tightening Iron Bands around Bales, in order to prevent too great an expansion of the bale after it is taken from the press, of which device this specification is a full and clear description, and will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

A represents the upper plateau of the press; B, the bars running across the bottom of the plateau, of which bars a side view is here shown, and between which the hoops are passed in placing them on the bale; and O, the bale. is a bracket attached to the upper plateau of the press, as here shown, one at each end of the plateau, which brackets, have a hole at the point E, through which a rod of iron or other metal is passed, and extends along the front of the plateau. The

brackets and rods are intended to form a fulcrum for the lever of my tightener. Though the same results may be attained by means of a chain or rope suspended by means of rings or loops to a like rod at a convenient height, as used upon the plateau, the lever will be attached to the lower end of the chain or rope by means of a hook or swivel, which forms a like fulcrum.

My improved tightener consists of the lever Hi, bar F, and bar G, the bar F being curved, as shown in the drawing, or can be made straight, at front view of said bar being shown at F, the lever H being slotted for the reception of bars F and G in order that they may move more freely on the pins connecting them with tightening the end of the hoop 0 attached to the buckle, and at'the same time the lower end of the hoop N will be drawn upward, where the hoop can be secured from slipping by driving a wedge into the buckle. The motion ofthe lever may be downward and the same result reached by changing the bar F to the place of bar G in the lever H- and upon the end of the lever next to the hale I place an eccentric, which will be used in the following manner: Place the goose-neck 1: over the buckle K, to which one end of the band 0 is attached; bring the other end of the band upward and through the buckle;

pass it through the slot or mortise in the end The other end of the band, being caught by the eccentric G, is pulled up a corresponding distance. The wedge is then driven into the buckle, which secures the two ends of the band at the point attained.

In lieu of the pins L and M on bar G, an eccentric may be used, and has been used, by me, and also nipper-jaws for drawing up the lower hoop end, though neither of these devices are .as convenient or speedy as the pins shown in the drawing; and in lieu of the brackets bars may be used extending across the ends of the plateau. The wheel .90 can be placed in the end of the lever H, and will facilitate handling the lever should its end strike the plateau.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The lever H, bars F and G, in combination with the brackets D and rod E, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
