The process of color-printing is one oi' they most important and hard problems of the printing art-s and though there is a large de- `mand for color-printed products, efforts to solve the problems in a satisfactory manner from a technical and economical standpoint have not succeeded. lt has been already proposed to provide color-printing machines in which a plurality ot printing tables or printing bases, at least as many as colors are required, and of printing blocks, are arranged circumterentially,and in equally spaced positions around a common axis. But in one kind of these machines the printing bases were rotated around the common center to bring each printing base or plate, together with the sheet of paper to'bel printed, into cooperation With the radially movable printing blocks. This arrangement is very unsatisfactory from the practical point of view because each printing base must be, previous to the printing operation, brought in: precise conformity to the corresponding printing block by the most ditlicult and careful preparatory operations (coating and adj ustments) but this conformity being annuled by the next rotation of the printing base towards another printing bloc-k, requiring another adjustment, the arrangement results in useless spotted vproducts especially in ythe case of liner color-printed matters. In another kind of t-he color-printing ma.- chines hitherto known, in which a particular rotatable clamping disc, using as many paper clamping or gripping meansas there are printing tables or bases, is provided for supporting and periodically moving the sheets oi" paper in a circle and from one printing place to the next, the above mentipned disadvantage of the rotation ofthe printingbases could bev eliminated. A cross frame between the vertical rods 19 is in connection with an eccentriccollar surrounding an adjusting and stopping eccentric Q0, all this in substai'itia-lly knowninanner. By means of this eccentric thel rods 19 together with the printing block and its frame may be lifted independently of the operating device in such a manner that the printing block cannot reach the printing base even in the lowest position of the operated leverlG; in this way one or the other of the printing blocks may be, if desired, taken from the printing operation or the stroke of the printing block regulated at will. This eccentric devi'ce serving for the purpose of adjustments and stopping being well known in other printing machines a further description of the same is not required but it will be noted that the use lof this adjusting device in connection with the machine according to the invention may be, besides, used also for the further event if :in the single color printing, urgent work is to be carried out very rapidly; in such case one of the printing blocks, by means of which one printino' operation is just in the course of completion, may be simply taken ofiv from printing without the necessity of -changing this block and of varying the coatings of the base whereupon the printing t) l L b block according to the new urgent work will be inserted into'one of the free block frames C, or C2 or C3.
The common slideV E is provided at its lower end with a rhoinbic articulated rod system the side articulations 24 of which, or rollers mounted upon these articulations, are actuated for the purpose of raising the slide E by cams e the driving of which will be described later.

there are provided, as already mentioned, an abutment .l and side abutment regularly controlled so as to enable the wheel l) to make its quarters of revolution together with thc sheet of paper after the insertion and gripping of the latter. According to this condiion the abutment T is constructedand controlled in the following manner, also as shown in Figure 6.
The proper abutment J consistingof a horizontal bar portion resting upon the platen B0, is carried by a bar 25 bent olf at right angle and branched olf from a vertical rod 26 (see Figures 2 and 6). This rod QG is guided in a recess a2 of the central frame A itself and connected at its lower endwith a link 27 articulated upon atwo-arm lever 28 the bearing of which is mounted upon the foot 2 of themachine. The underside of the outer arm of the lever 28 is-acted uponby a cam j fixed upon the shaft Ml (see Figures 3' and G) while the outer end of this lever is under the action of a spring 29. The construction and the driving of the'cam this driving being described later more particularly, is accomplished in such a manner that always the sheet of paper the printing of which is iinished and which is then carried by the wheel l) fromv the printing base V4B3 to the platenv B, and released as described below, may be withdrawn by the operator each time the left hand arm of the lever 28 is lifted by the cam y' against the action of the spring 29. Thereby the rod 26 is lowered, together with the abutment J, so that thelatter will be resting upon the platen BO and consequently ready for the proper positioning of the new sheet of paper. After some moments during which the insertion of the new paper by the operator and the gripping of this paper by the gripping device F has taken place, the lower portion of the cainy' reaches the underside of the lever 28 causing the lowering of the outer arm of this lever bythe spring 29 and the consequent lifting'of the bars 27, 26 and 25, together with the abutment J, so that the path of the sheet of paper becomes entirely free;
Simultaneously with the control of the abutment J there takes place also the control of the side abutment S, (see Figures 2 and 9) but with the difference that the withdrawal of this side abutment out of the operating position or of the path of the sheet of paper is not carried out by lifting but by lowering below the platen E0. For this purpose the proper side abutment S consists ofl a block mounted upon the upper end of a vertical rod 55, both passing through a slotr 54 of the paper and maybe lined in the adjusted position in any suitable way. c
,The rod 55 .is guided in vertical guides mounted upon the frame of the machine and bent olf at right angle at its lower end, t-he latter carrying a roller 56 which cooperates with a cam s (see Figure 8) lined upon the shaft lli/l1 so that when a new sheet of paper is inserted, the rod :i5-together with side abutment S-is raised by the cam s in the operating position. There, namely shortly before l wheel D is again rotated together with sheet of paper towards the printing base B1, the lower part of the cam s turns under the roller 56 whereby the abutment S and the rod 55 are lowered under the action of a spring or of the weight of the rod system, below the platen B0. y
For the purpose of gripping the sheets of llO paper to be revolved by quarters of a revolution, eachof the four plates d (see Figure 2) arranged in a circle at equal ,distances apart,`
carries a gripping device F tlie'constructioii and control of which are as follows (see Figures 7, 8 and 6).

When the wheel carrying the sheet of paper, the printing of which was just finished, moves away from the printing base B3 and reaches the platen BO, the elongated arin of the j aw 37 comes underneath a roller 32 (see Figures 6 and 7) carried by a bar 30. lThis bar 30 which is bent two fold at right angles see Figures 6 and 8) is fixed upon a vertical rod 33' guided ina recess a3 of the central frame itself (see Figure 3) and connected at its lower. end by a link 34 with a device similar to the controlling means of the abutment J i. e.' with a two arm lever 35 which is likewise rotatably mounted upon the foot 2 ofthe machine. The outer free arm of this lever is acted upon from yunderneath by a kcam f and a spring 36 in such a manner that when the gripping device F reaches the platen B0 the outerfarm of the lever 35 is raised by the cani and consequently the roller 82 is lowered so that the clamp 37, 38 is opened and therefore the operator may withdraw the finished printed sheet' of paper. The gripping device or clamp rests. in some instances in the opened position. Meanwhile the abutment J has been lowered and pressed Y against the platen Bo. 'At the saine time the inner edge of the sheet of paper inserted by the operator toward the abutment J is passing over the free endof the lower jaw 38 of the clamp whereupon the lower portion of the cam f passes bel-ow the outer arm .of the lever 35 causing the lowering of thisvouter arin by the spring 36 and `therefore the raising of the i'oller 32. At this instant the outer end- 3l `of the upper jaw 37 of the cla-nip strikes again, under the action of the 'spring 59, upon the edge of the inserted sheet or paper so that the latter will be gripped. Preferably the upper jaw or both jaws of the clamp are twofold ones (see Figure) so tha-t the sheet will be grippedV at two places by the gripping device. For enabling a free motion of the outer ends of the clamp the horizental bar forming the abutment J is somewhatbent upwards at its central portion as shown in Figure. The cani f, the driving of which will be described later, is fixed upon a shaft M, .coin-mon to the Canis j and 7c.

Upon the shaft of the pulley N (see Figure is further mounted the bevel gear wheel 7 serving, as above described, for the driving of the sheet conveying wheel D whereas the end ofthe shaft M1 opposite to the cam S carries a bevel gear wheel 57 driving, by means of a bevel gear wheel 59a, a vertical shaft 58 serving to operate the color distributing rollvers and carrying for this purpose at the upper end a bevel gear wheel 59b (see Figure 5) The meshing with a bevel gear wheel 60. latter is xed upon a shaft 7a2 the bearings of which are mounted upon the above mentioned supporting plate G. Through this shaft 7a, and by means of a spur gear wheel 6l and further small gear wheels usually employed (not shown), there are driven the color distributing rollers K2 whereas on the ends of the shaft 7.22 bevel gear wheels 62, are provided, the wheel 62 meshing with a! similar wheel 63 of the shaft 7s, and wheel 65 with a similar wheel 66 of the shaft 762. The said shaft k1 serves, by means of a spur gear wheel 64 and further Ysmall Gear wheels, through which the adjacent rollers drive one another, to drive the color distributing rollers K1 and-similarly-the shaft serves, by meanspof a spur gear wheel 67 and 'further 'small gear wheels, to drive the color distributing rollers K2. derivated from the shaft 762 the driving of all of the sets K1, K2, K2 of color distributing rollers. These sets of rollers are arranged in `fixed bearings mounted upon the frame of the machine in arms for example (not shown) which are fixed on the upriglits 3 (see Figure l). In a color-printing machine, the combination ot a number oi printing bases arranged eqnidistances apart in a circle around a common axis, the number of said bases being at least equal to the number oi colors' to be printed, a number of printing` 'forms arrange-:l equidistances apart in a circle coaxially with the said printing bases and movable to and fro in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said circle, a gripping disc provided with means tor gripping the sheets of paper lto be printed, the gripping disc being movable exclusively in a circle, a. common movable frame for carrying said bases and rotatable around the said common axis, and means for moving said frame whereby any one printing base brought into position for executing` certain preparatori7 operations preceding the printing operation. v
4. In a color-printing machine, the combination of a number of printing bases arranged equidist-ances apart in a circle around a common axis, the number orn bases being at least equal to the number of colors to be printed, a number of' printing forms arranged equidistances apart in a circle coaxially with said printing bases and movable to and fro n a direction perpendicular to the plane of said circle, a gripping disc movable exclusively in a circle concentric with said circle and provided with means for gripping the sheets oi paper to be printed, a common trame carrying the said printing bases, means to move said frame whereby any printing base may be brought into position for making certain preparatory operations preceding the printing operation, a plurality of sheet retaining bars connected to a common frame, and a single controlling device for said bars.
5. In a color-printing machine, the combination of a number of printing bases arranged equidistances apart in a circle around a common axis, the number of said bases being at least equal to the number of colors to be printed, a number of printing forms arranged equidistances apart in a circle coaxially with the said printing bases and movable to and fro in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said circle, a gripping disc movable exclusively in a circle concentric with said circle and provided with means for gripping the sheets of paper to be printed, a common frame rotatable around the common axis of said printing forms and gripping disc and carrying the said printing bases, means t0 1,eee,929

6. In a color-printing machine, the combination of a number of printing bases ar- `ranged equidistances apart in a circle around a common axis, the number ot' said bases being at least equal. to the number of colorsto be printed, a number' of print-ing forms ared, a common iframe carrying the said print` ing bages, means to move said frame to bring any printing base into position for making certain preparatory operations preceding the printing operation, a plurality of sheet retaining bars connected to a common trame, and a single controlling vdevice for said bars, said retaining bars and controlling device being arranged inside and on thev outer surce of a central main trame of the machine.
