Application filed May 3, 1928. serialNo. 274,726.
The main object of this invention is to provide an advertising device in which a plurality of panels, upon which advertising matter is displayed, are mounted so that they are capable of rotation. when the frame upon which the panels rest rotates. l/Vith a device such as disclosed both sides of the panels are readable and as these panels are mounted on a rotating frame all of the advertising matter displayed on the panels may be read by a single observer.
Another object of this invention is to provide an advertising device using a plurality of panels which are rotatable about an individual axis and all of the panels in turn rotate on a frame so that all of the panels are presented. to an observer. This is accomplished through the medium of a train of gears cooperating with each other in such manner that, as the panels are presented to the wind. and turnthe frame, the gears will transmit a rotational motion to the individual panels.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the advertising device.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View takenon line 3-3 of Figure 1 illustrating the train of gears which rotate the panels upon their axes.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates one of a plurality of rectangular panels. Intermediate the width of these panels, at both ends, studs 11 are mounted thereon. The ends of these studs insert into openings provided in the frames of the device. The upper studs insert in openings in a substantially square skeleton frame 12 and the lower studs of these panels register in openings of a solid substantially square frame 13. The upper frame 12 is directly connected to the lower frame by tie rods 14: and 15 so that these tie rods form a unit. A shaft 16 rigidly mounted on a base 17 projects upwardly from the latter and passes through both frames, the upper end of said shaft projecting somewhat from the top of the upper frame 12. This upper projecting end of the shaft receives the sleeve 18 of a directional weather-vane 19 which is rotatable independently on said shaft. The upper frame is provided with intersecting cross braces 20 and at the corners of these frames the studs 11, forming parts of the panels, are ournaled. The lower frame 13 has these studs 11 passing therethrough. The studs project from the underside of the lower frame 13 and have spur gears 21 attached thereto. The central shaft 16, which passes through the upper and lower frames 12 and 13 respec tively, has a spur gear 22 rigidly seated on the base 17. This spur gear 22 remains stationary and is not capable of rotation, being secured in some desirable manner. Mounted on the frame and rotatable therewith is a plurality of studs 23 which project downwards ly from the underside of said lower frame 13 and are located between the spur gears 21 and 22. Each of these studs has an idler pinion gear 24: rotatably mounted thereon.
The device is used for advertising, having the advertising matter displayed on both' sides of the panel 10. This device may be used as an outdoor or indoor article. In using it as an outdoor article the weather-vane 19 forms part of the structure. This weather-vane is freely rotatable about the shaft 16 and is always headed into the wind thereby indicating the direction of the wind. The frames are adapted to be rotated about the shaft 16 in both directions. Rotation occurs intermittently when a wind current strikes a surface of one or more panels. The wind exerts a pressure upon these panels and rotates the entire frames and panels. As the lower frame is rotated the idler pinions 2 1, meshing with the first or stationary spur gear 22 and the spur gear 21 causes these panels to rotate individually about their axes thereby displaying both of their surfaces which, in this manner, may be read by an observer.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. An advertising device comprising a stationary base, a stationary shaft projecting from said base, a frame rotatable on said shaft, rotatable panels mounted on said frame, said panels being adapted to rotate said frame when coming in contact with an air current, gears on said panels, and means on said stationary shaft and frame engaging said panel gears for rotating said panels when said frame is rotated.
2. An advertising device comprising a stationary base, a stationary shaft rojectin from said base, aframe rotatab e on said shaft, rotatable panels mounted on said frame, said panels being adapted to rotate said frame when coming in contact with an air current, gears on said panels, a gear rigid with said stationary shaft, and idler pinions rotatably mounted on said frame engaging said panel gears and said stationary gears to rotate said panels when said frame is ro- 10 tated. y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ERNEST RUEGGER.
