Description

22,, 1929. 1,699,534 J. T HUNTER HOSIERY AND METHOD OF MAKING s mn Filed Feb. 10, 1926 B", V /l Inventor.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. HUNTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN M. ALLEN AND KENNETH W. ALLEN,
BOTH OF TORONTO, CANADA.
Application filed February The principal object of the invention is to simplify the method of manufacturlng double hosiery and to thereby reduce the cost of production.
The principal feature of the inventlon consists in the novel manner of securing the two elements of the composite stocking together at the top.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the completed stocking.
Figure 2 is a full sized sectional view showing the manner of securing the terminal edges of the stocking in forming the pocket welt at the top.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevational view showing a portion of the stitching on the inner side of the stocking.
In the manufacture of double hosiery where two separately knitted stockings are united together to form a single stocking and said stockings are joined together throughout the major portion of their length by a back seam it has been the custom to seam the upper edge of the inner stocking at the lower edge of the pocket welt or to loop the upper edge of the inner stocking to an edge of fabric formed for the purpose.
Such constructions require the services of very skilled operators and the operation of securing the top of the inner stocking is necessarily slow and costly.
In order to overcome the various difficulties involved the present invention contemplates forming both inner and outer stockings A and B of substantially the same length and turning the top of both stockings to form a pocket welt C.
In order to accomplish this result and to provide a stocking with a neat external appearance it is constructed in the following manner.
The outer silk stocking B is placed upon a suitable form, the inner cotton stocking A 10, 1926. Serial No. 87,867.
being then stretched over the outer stocking and the two are dried together. They are then seamed togetherup the back for the major portion of their length by a longitudinal seam D.
The unseamed upper ends E are then turned inwardly the depth of the desired pocket welt and the doubled in portion is then turned outwardly as shown in Figure 2 so that the raw edges of the top are aligned with the doubled over portion F.
The raw edges of both stockings are then overcast on a stitching machine and the stitches are caught throughout the doubled or looped portion F of the inner stocking, leaving the outer stocking clear so that no stitching will show thereon.
The method herein described is extremely simple and may be performed by the ordinary stitching operator and the operation is performed very rapidly.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. A stocking, comprising two separately knitted stockings of equal length placed one over the other and secured together by a longitudinal seam and having their upper ends turned inwardly and the free edges of both stitched together and to the inner of the two separate stockings forming a pocket welt and leaving the outer stocking free.
2. A method of making a double stocking consisting in knitting two stockings separately and of equal length, then placing one over the other with their top edges in alignment, then securing the separate stockings together by a longitudinal seam, then turning the aligned tops of both stockings inwardly, and finally stitching the aligned edges of both stockings together and con necting the edges to the inner stocking leavifng the opposed section of outer stocking ree.
