IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH ES-DRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,939, dated November 16, 1875; application filed October 8, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, WILLIs ADAMS, of Neelyville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved clothes-drier, which shall be so constructed that it maybe easily folded into a very small compass for storage and transportation, a-ndwhich shall be conveniently folded and unfolded, and when unfolded shall afford a large amount of drying-surface. The invention consists in the-combination of two or more sets of pivoted arms, the connectingbars, the sliding band, and the jointed Wires with each other and with the post; and in the combination of the flanged band and the pivoted legs with the lower end of the post of the drier, as hereinafter fully described.

A is a square post, to the sides of which, at its upper end, and at a suitable distance below said upper end, are pivoted the inner ends of two or more sets of arms, B. Each upper arm is connected with the corresponding lower arm by a bar, 0, the ends of which are pivoted to the middle parts of the said arms. To each lower arm B is pivoted the upper end of a bar, D, the lower end of which is pivoted to the side of the square band E, that fits and slides upon the post A, so that it may slide downward, as the arms Bare closed or folded, and may slide upward as the arms are opened or unfolded, all the arms being thus made to move together. The sliding band E is supported and secured in place, when raised, by

a springcatch, F, secured to or bya pin inserted in the post A. Through the outer ends of the arms B of each set is passed a galvanized wire, G, which is jointed at each side of l and so that the said legs I may be turned into a position parallel with the post A.

This construction gives a broad base to the drier when in use, and enables the legs to be folded as well as the arms, reducing the drier, when folded, to a very small compass. This construction also gives to the drier, when opened out, a very large amount of dryingsurface.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of two or more sets of pivoted arms, B, the connecting-bars O and D,

the sliding band E, and the jointed wire G, with each other, and with the post A, substantially as herein shown and described.
