Description

Jan. 15, 1929. 1,699,282
J. H. DAVIDSON GUM STOCK DEFLECTOR FOR RUBBER CALBNDERS Filed May '7, 1927 calender roll 6 rotating continuously in the direction of the arrows at and I) in Figs. 1
and 2 respectively and having a small amount of excess rubber stock adhering thereto after the fabric is disengaged therefrom is engaged by the deflector 9, the surface 17 of which is held closely in engagement with the periphery of said roll by the screws 13, and as said roll rotates, the edge 16 of the deflector scrapes the adhesive material from the periphery of said roll at the end thereof and the working face 15 acts to guide the excess material inwardly causing said material to pass from the innermost point of the deflector. at the surface 18 thereof, from which point the roll returns the material to the point where it was originally applied to the roll. The deflector 9 is held against the periphery of the roll 6 by theadjusting screws 13, and as the surface 16 of the deflector becomes worn, the adjusting screws are manipulated to offset the wear. The inward movement of the deflector 9 toward the periphery of the roll 6 is permitted by the presence of the slot 11 in the arm 10, and when the deflector 9 is not held closely against the periphery of the roll, the stud 8 acts as a pivot for said deflector.
I claim:
1. A gum stock deflector having, in combination, a calender roll, a bracket, a deflector pivotally and slidably mounted upon said bracket, and means upon said bracket to force said deflector against the periphery of said roll.
2. A gum stock deflector having, in combination, a bracket, a segmental helical deflector pivotally and slidably mounted upon said bracket, and means to move said deflector upon the pivot thereof against the periphery of said roll, whereby material adhering to said roll may be deflected inwardly along the periphery thereof.
3. A gum stock deflector having, in combination, a calender roll, a bracket, a deflector mounted upon said bracket, and means to force said deflector against the periphery of said roll, said deflector being provided with an edge for scraping said roll and having a concave curved surface approximately normal to the surface of the roll and containing said scraping edge.
4. A gum stock deflector having, in combination, a calender roll, a bracket, a deflector pivotally and slidably mounted upon said bracket, and means to force said deflector against the periphery of said roll, said deflector being provided with an edge for scraping said roll and having a concave curved surface approximately normal to the surface of the roll and containing said scraping edge, said edge and surface being positioned relatively to said roll to deflect material adhering to said roll inwardly along the periphery thereof.
5. A gum stock deflector having, in combination, a calender roll, a bracket, a pivot mounted in said bracket, a segmental helical deflector slidably mounted upon said pivot, and means to force said deflector against the periphery of said roll, said deflector being provided with an edge for scraping said roll and having a curved surface containing said scraping edge, said edge and surface being positioned relatively to said roll to deflect material adhering to said roll inwardly along the periphery thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES HADDON DAVIDSON.
