PORTABLE ASH TRAY;

Application filed December 21, 1926. Serial No. 156,090.

This invention relates generally to'ci arette, cigar, or the like ash trays, and as more particular reference to a novel type of portable ash container.

The invention has for an object .the provision of an improved ortable ash container which will be adapte for attachment to a button on a wearers clothing, and which can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawing, and to the ap ended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a portion of cloth of some wearers clothing, and button 11 is supported therein by stitching 12.

A receptacle 13 of any size or shape, 1s formed with a top opening 14, and has supported near theopening a shaft 15 carrying a cover 16 simulating a butterfly valve. Projectin from the side of the receptacle 13 is a pm 16 limiting the motion of the cover 16 to closed position. One end of the shaft 15 is provided with a knurled knob 17, and the other end of the shaft is engaged by one end of a spring 18, the otherend of the spring being engaged in the receptacle 13. A strap member 19 is looped as at 20, riveted to the receptacle as at 21, and has a top extension 22 bent downwardly as at 23 and formed with an inverted V-cut 24. The loop 20 may accommodate a finger of some person, for handling purposes, and the device may then be supported on a button, such as 11. The ashes of cigarettes may be deposited on the cover 16, and upon manual turning of knob 17, the ashes drop into the bottom of the receptacle. Upon the releasing of knob 17, the spring 18 urges the cover 16 to closed position.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the receptacle 13' has a rotatably mounted shaft 15 with an attached cover 16. Pin 16 projects from the receptacle side and limits the movement of cover 16 to closed position. Rotatably mounted parallel to and near shaft 15 is another shaft 25 formed with a square portion 26, and an end finger 27 mounted on the square portion 26 is a handle 28 having a projecting pin 29.engageable in apertures 30 in the top extension 22, so that the shaft 25 may be locked with the finger 27 extending downwards or upwards. To disengage the pin 29 from the apertures 30, the top extension 22 and the downwardly bent portion 23 should be manually compressed. The side of the cover 16 opposite to pin 16 is pivotally.

connected to the top of a link 31, the bottom of the link 31 being pivotally attached to one end of a plunger 32 formed with an outer head 33 and normally urged outwards by a spring 34, manually pushing the plunger inwards, moves the link 31, causing the cover 16 to turn to an opened position. The shaft 15 is formed with a recess 36, and with the cover 16 in opened position, the finger 27 may be engaged in this recess to lock the cover in this position, while when the cover 16 is in closed position, the finger 27 may be engaged in the recess 36, but against the other. end, to lock the cover in the closed position.

eliminated, and the cover 16 is operated by the knob 17 While I have illustrated and described,

the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departin from the spirit or the scope of the appen ed claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A device" of the class described, comprising a receptacle formed with a top opening, a shaft rotatively mounted in apertures in the sides of said receptacle and disposed across the same having spaced opentating the same together with said shaft, a

plunger slidably mounted inan aperture in the bottom of said receptacle and pivotally attached to the lower end of said lever, and

locking mechanism comprising an adjustable rod slidably mounted in the side of said receptacle, said rod being formed with a hooked end adapted to be selectively engaged in the spaced openings in said shaft for locking said plate in a predetermined position.

A device of the class described comprising a receptacle formed with a top opening, a partition disposed between the upper and lower ends of said receptacle compris ing a rgtatively mounted shaft and a plate attached thereto, said shaft being provided with spacednotches, a lever pivotally attached at one end to said partition, a plundisposed around ger slidablymounted in an aperture in the bottom of said receptacle and ivotall Y attached at its inner end to said ever, a ob on the outer end of said plunger, 8. spring said plunger and between the bottom end of said receptacle and said knob adapted to urge said plunger downwardly for positioning said partition across the passage in said receptacle, said partition being adapted to be rotated to open position by inward movement of said plunger and the lever attached thereto, a locking pin comprising a bar partly of square and partly of round cross section slidably mounted .in an aperture of the side of said receptacle, and a hooked extremity on the inner end of said rod adapted to be selectively positioned in said spaced notches to retain said partition in a predetermined position.
