'l" is invention relates to straining devices and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in connection with Bordeaux mixture and which operates to effectively strain such mixture before being received within the supply tank of a sprayer.
The invention also has for an ObJQ-(lt to provide a device of this kind wherein a straining element may be readily and conveniently removed or applied tofaciiitate replacement when necessary together with an agitating member or paddle operating in a manner to prevent clogging of the straining element and also to substantially eliminate waste of ti e material comprised in the mixture. The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts of our' mproved straining device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in sect on and partly in elevation of a straining device constructed in accordance with an embodin'ient of our invention;

As herein disclosed, our improved strainer comprises a body member B having its lower portion 1 substantially in the form of an 1nverted cone and with, its upper portion 2 substantially cylindrical. The lower or restrict ed portion of the lower part 1 of the body B is provided with a discharge opening 3 defined by a depending threaded collar 4 with which is adapted to be detachably engaged a 1927. The part 1 of the body B has disposed radially thereacross the spaced cross mei'nbers 9 which provide a mounting for the shaft 10. The upper or outer portion of the shaft 10 iini'nediately adj accnt to the outer cross memher 9 and within the body B is provided With an operating crank 11 whereby the shaft 10 may be readily and conveniently rotated as desired. The shaft 10 is freely disposed through the cross members 9 and has threaded thereon the nuts 12 which rest upon or contact with the lower cross member 9 from above.
The lower or inner end portionof the shaft 10 extends below the inner cross member 9 and he; threaded thereon the sleeve 1% which, by Contact from below with the lower cross member 9. serves to hold the applied shaft 10 normally against displacement. The end portion of the applied sleeve 14 opposed to the straining element 8 is bifurcated, the resultant kerf 15 receiving the central portion of a flat blade 16, said blade being held to the sleeve 14 by a pin 17 or the like, said pin 17 preferably being of a cotter type.
In the assembly of. our improved structure, the flat blade 16 is disposed substantially radially across the straining element 8 with the flat side faces of said blade 16 substantially at right angles thereto. The outer l0ngitutudinal edge of this blade 16 is also in close proximity to the upper surface of the straining' element 8. y i 1 In practice, our improved strainer is placed with the sleeve 5 through the filling opening of the supply container or receptacle of a sprayer whereupon the Bordeaux mixture or kindred insecticide is poured Within the body B and efiectively strained, before entering the receptacle or Container, by the element 8. The operating crank 11 can readily swing to one side thus eliminating any possible obstruction being offered thereby when the mixture is poured within the body B from a pail or kindred device.
Upon rotating the shaft 10 the blade 16 will operate effectually to prevent the element 8 being clogged by the various ingredients'comprised in the Bordeaux mixture or the like and at the same time the rotation of the blade 16 will effectively connninute those portions of material which may be of a size too large to pass through the element 8, thus substantially eliminating waste of any of the active ingredients of the composition.
By adjusting the nuts 12 lengthwise of the shaft 10, the position of the blade 16 with respect to the element 8 may be regulated or varied as required in a manner which is believed to be apparent.
It is to be noted that the element 8 is held in applied position by the clamping action of the flanges 6 and 7 Therefore, when it is desired to replace the element 8 or to re move the same for any cause, it only required to remove the sleeve 5 which may be easily done within a few seconds.

i thought to be obvious that a straining device constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood aslimiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
lVe claim 1. A. straining device comprising a body member having a discharge opening, a straining element disposed over said discharge opening, spaced cross members within the body member, a shaft freely disposed through said cross members, a part mounted upon the shaft and contacting from above with one of the cross members, a sleeve engageable with the shaft below a cross member, said sleeve having its out-er portion provided with a kerf, a flat blade having a portion extending within the kerf of the sleeve, means for holding the blade to the sleeve, said blade being flat and elongated with a marginal portion closely adjacent to the straining element and the flat side faces of the blade being substantially perpendicular to said element, and means for rotating the shaft.
2. A straining device comprising a body member having a discharge opening, a straining elementdisposed over said discharge opening, spaced cross members within the body member, a shaft freely disposed through said cross members, a part mounted upon the shaft and contacting from above with one of the cross members, a sleeve engageable with the shaft below a cross member, said sleeve having its outer portion provided with a kerf, a flat blade having a portion extending within the kerf of the sleeve, means for holding the blade to the sleeve, said blade being flat and elongated with a marginal portion closely adjacent to the straining element and the flat side faces of the blade being substantially perpendicular to said element, the outer portion of the shaft within the body member being laterally offset to provide an operating crank.
