IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,851, dated November 9, 1875; application filed July 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known'that I, CHARLES T. SEGAR, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same.

The invention relates to a bed-bottom formed of thin strips of wood, resting upon and connected together by coiled metal springs, the said springs resting upon transverse sill-pieces of Wood, and the strips forming the top being placed longitudinally, and connected together at or near their ends by thin flexible metallic strips.

The invention will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.

Figure I is a general plan of the improved bed-bottom, Fig. II is a transverse sectional elevation of the same.

The bed-bottom is built upon transverse sillpieces A, which hold the parts together laterally. Upon these sill-pieces are secured metallic spiral springs B, and on top of the spiral springs, and secured to them, are thin'pieces or strips of wood 0, which are placed longitudinally, as shown in Fig. I. Thin metal strips D are secured to the strips 0 at or near their ends, so as to hold the strips forming the top in their proper lateral position, but at the same time allowing them the utmost liberty as to vertical deflection, either singly or together. There will be three of the transverse sills A, and consequently three rows of the spiral springs, one at or near each of the ends, and one row centrally located. To the tops of the spiral springs, placed as above described, the strips 0 will be secured in such a manner as to have the top end of every spring :affixed to two or three of the pieces 0, and the whole top will in this manner be connected together so as to form an admirably well-yielding and durable spring bed-bottom.

Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim-- A bed-bottom constructed with a series of top strips, 0, connected together at their ends by means of metallic strips D, and at equal distances apart between such strips 0 by. means of series of metallic springs B, the said springs B being arranged at their upper ends to connect the strips 0 alternately, and at their lower ends to rest upon sill-pieces A, the whole being constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
