. Application filed February 20,1926. Serial No. 89,778. I
This invention relates to improvements in record devices, and moreparticularlyto recrd devices in which a large number of items are to be arranged in a single line devoted to 5 the subject to which the items relate.
The objects of the invention are to provlde a record device of this kind in which the subjects to whichthe record relates are entered in a column, a'line being devoted to each subj ect, and in which a plurality'of sheets are arrcnged so that the lines on different sheets arearranged in "alinement with the lines on which the subjects are entered, the several pages being indexed to indicate the general nature of the items recorded thereon and to facilitate finding the particular information which is desired relatively tov the. Subjects; also to improve record keeping devices of this kind in other respects hereinafter spec In the accompanying drawings, I Fig. 1 is a face view of a record keeping device embodying the invention, e Fig.2 is a similar view thereof showing the top'page thereof turned overand other pages partly turned over. I p
The record device'may be used to advantage in connection with the keeping ofv many kinds of records, for example a record of insurance policies, of investments or securities, of
.mortgages'on properties or real estate holdings, and it is'not intended therefore to limit this invention to the keeping of any particular kind of record. 1
In the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings the record device consists of a plurality of sheets of paper or other flexible material, the lower sheet A having a portion a at one side 40 thereof provided with a column or columns for identifying the subjects with reference to v which the records are kept, the remaining portion of the sheet being preferably divided into columns for recording various items with i reference to the subjects identified in the subj ect column orcolumns of the portion a. The
device also includes other sheets B,VC, D and E arranged above or superimposed upon. the subject carrying sheet A, which other sheets are preferably also provided with columns in which'items relating 'to the subjects identified on sheet A may be recorded. It will be understood that the subject sheet A may be used in connection with any desired number of item sheets, four being shown in the construction illustrated. All of the sheets of the record device are bound together inany suitable or desired manner,st aples 5 being employed for this purpose in the construction illustrated, which are arranged adjacent to i the upper edges of the sheets. All of these sheets areprovided with a pluralityof lines 6 extending crosswise of the sheets, and the several sheets are so arranged relatively, to each other that the lines onthe several sheets are substantially in registration with .each other, in such a manner that the lines 6 of the lowest sheet- A are in alinement with the correspondinglines 6 of any of the other sheets, for example the sheetfE as shown i n .l Tig.-'1, and the sheets 13, C and D as shown in Fig. 2. The several sheetsare of such sizejor are. so
cut that when they are secured together as. shown in the drawings, the portion a of the lower sheet A at one side thereof on which the ,subjects are identified will project beyond the other sheets. Each of these superimposed sheets orpages may also'be divided into any desired number of columns by means of lines 7 intersecting, the lines 6, and preferably spaces 8 are provided at the head of each column in which may be entered a title of the items recorded or to berecorded in -the column. p p In order to facilitate the finding of any lnformation on the record device or themaking of entries thereon, each of the item sheets is preferably provided with an index tab. or extension. In the particular construction shown each sheet is provided at its. upper left hand corner with a tab or extension and these various extensions are arrangedso that portions of each tab are visible, the several sheets B, C, D and E being provided respectively with integral tabs or extensions .7), a, va? and e, and the tab of the sheet Bis arranged so as to leave a space a at the head of the subject, space a on the sheet A exposed for pursheet A is'particularly desirable since a person wishing to obtain someinformation from the recorder to enter some information thereon can readily turn to the general classification of the information at the index tabs above the column in which the subject to which the information relates is entered.
When a record device of the kind described is used in connection with the life insurance policies of .an. individual, the subjectmatter columns onthe portions a of the lowermost page A of the record device will containsufficient information to clearly identify each policy such for example as a policy number and the name of the company and similar inmiums or deposits payable under the several policies identified in the subject matter col- 7 umn on page A. The next page C may contain information as to dividends and the columns on'the age may be graduated, ifdesired, for i the di erent years during which thepolicy is to remainin force so that the dividends received each year can be recorded thereon.
The nextpage B may contain information as I to the loans made on'the policy including in separate columns theamount loaned, theint erest due thereon, the dates whenthe loan and "interest are due, and other information relating tothis general subject. The portion of page A which is normally covered by theother sheets may contain information with reference to the cash and loan'values of the policy and the columns on this page may also be headed in accordance with the years during which the policy may remain in force, the cash and loan values for'each year beingindicated in the yearly column on the line 6 with the subject or title. identifying the particular policy. Consequentlywhen a person having a number of insurance policies wishes to find when the premiums are payable it is only necessary to refer to the index tab marked premium or deposit and thus quickly turn to the page on which the premiums are recorded, and similarly other information relating to any of the policies can be located or entered. The record device may he used equally; well for keeping records of other kinds.
.By means of the record device described any desired amount of information with ref- 'erence to any subject can be'kept by increasing or decreasing the number of sheets, andthe lines of the sheets are so arranged thata particular line on each sheet relates to the particular subject identified on the corresponding line of the bottom sheet. By means of this record device all of the'lines 6 on any sheet aretcomparatively short and even the columns at the extreme right hand side of the be quickly obtained, particularly because the index tabs are arranged directly above the subject matter space a of the sheet A. The index tabs being formed as parts of the sheets add very little to the cost of the device.
I claim as my invention 1. A record device including a plurality of superimposed sheets having lines thereon arranged substantially in registration, all of said sheets with the exception of'the lowermost one havingportions at one side of each sheet cutout to progressivelygreaterextents from one corner and stopping short of an. adj acent corner towards which the cuts extend to expose a major edge portionofthe lowermost sheet for'the entry of subject matter1 on each line thereof having reference to entries made on all of said sheets on corresponding lines, and also to expose relatively smaller areas of the superposed sheets at oneend of the column of entries in said major edge portion, such smaller areas serving as index areas for corresponding sheets upon which index areas entries may hemade relating to the subject matter on eachsheet,
2. A record device including a plurality of superimposed sheets having lines thereon arranged substantially in registration, all of said sheets with the exception ofv the lowermost one having portions at one side of each sheet cut out to progresssively greater extents from one corner and stopping short of an adjacent corner towards whichthe'cu'ts extend to expose a major edge portion of thelowermost sheet, for the entry of subject matter on each line thereof having reference to entries made on all of said sheets on corresponding lines, and also to expose relatively smaller areas of th'esuperposed sheets at oneend of the column of entries insaid major edge portion, such smaller areas serving as index areas for corresponding sheets, upon which index 1 areas entries may be made relating to the subject matter contained on each sheet, said superimposed sheets being secured together along the edge parallel to the registering lines and extending from said adjacent corner to- 12 ward which said cuts exten r LAURENCEG.
