DISPENSING DEVICE.
Applicationl'ed December 17, 1926. Serial No. 155,395.
The invention relatesto dispensing devices and more particularly to devices of this char'- acterwhich are? designed for dispensing paperreceptacles, such as paper'cups and the IV like," in individual successive steps from vaY stack of such receptacles contained in the device. The. obj ect of the invention Vis to provide a simplegdispensingmechanism whereby the` cupswill be. positively: ejected in individua-l sequence'from the lower end ofthe stack in an efficient manner and whereby the remaining, stack of cups'4 will* be retained within thedevice. Other Amore specific obijects willV appear from the description hereinafter andthe features ofnovelty willfbe pointed out in the claims. It'willbe under# stood that .the term ".cups is used herein in a broadsense toinclude eouiivalenty recep.- tacles adapted `to be dispensedfrom a device such as is hereinshown andldescribed.v
In the accompanying `.drawings which illustrate an exampleof the invention without defining its.li`1nits,.Fig, 1f is anexterior elevation ofthe device partlyin section; Fig. 2l
is an kelevation looking at right anglesy to 1.; 8 is a fragmentary section on the line. 3-3 of Fig.. 2; Fig- 4 isa similar view showing the parts in aidilerent position; Fig. 5.1sa detail section on the line 5-5`of Fig.. 3; Figyis; a detail plan view, and Fig. 7 isa detail section on ltheline 74-7'of Fig..4.
The device comprises a -body 10 of suitable dimensions and shape generally cast in a suitable material in accordance with the particular type of receptacles for which the device is designed- In the illustrated example, the body. 1()l is hollow and is of cylindrical formY with Open inlet andexit ends as clearly shown in Figs.. 3, 4` and 5 of the drawings.` A container- 11', preferably consisting Of a tube of glassor other transparent material, having its" upper endv closed," is fitted upon said body and projectsA upwardly therefrom as illustratedfin Figsl and 2; in the preferred arrangement the body 10 is reamed out to form `an 'internal annularr shoulder 12 upon which the Open lower endl of the container 11 rests. The body 10`is provided near'its exit end :with a slit 13`extending upwardly and outwardly from'th'e inner surface a and including a grooved p0rtion 14, said slit 13 and its grooved I ortion 14 communicating :with the vbore 15 o a boss 16 'located externally upon vthe body 10v as shown in Fig. 2'; the axis of the bore inclines upwardly and outwardlyV relatively to' the.- major axis of the body 10' in axialfregistry with the slitl13'and its groove-14 as ill-ns.-v
slidably mounted in the bore- 15 V'and is'preferably cup shaped to receive the one end off a yspring 18, the 'other end ofwhich engages the bottom of the bore 15 for mair'ltainingv vtrated in Figs. 1, 3 a'nid'4.` A plunger 17Uis the plunger in andfreturning ittto its outer Y most'position'. An ejectin finger 19' is 'piv Otally'connected at 20 wit the plu-nger 17 andr projects lengthwise of the bore 15ifnto` the Vgroove l4'and slit`13'. The'fr'ee end ofv the finger 19 vis preferably curved in a direction transverse to its length, as indicated at 21, and terminates in anpejecting nose-'22;
the free endl of which, in the normal position of the ejecting means lies. approximately fiush with the inner surface a at'the slit/13 as shown in Fig. 1. The` ejecting finger 19 includes a compound slot 23having an inner end portion` o, extendingftransversely to the direction of movement' ofthe 'plunger 17"or in approximately the same direction as the free end portion ofthe finger 19, and'a continuing portion c extendingv lengthwise of the finger 19 and preferably at a` slight inclination tothe length thereof as shown in Figs. 3 and "4. A fixed pin 24 projects across the slit 13 and through the slot'23 for the purpose to be more fully set forthhereinafter; The body 10 is provided internally with a supporting means which, Vin the illus? trated example,` comprises two lugs. 25 located lupon opposite sides ofthe slit 13y and projecting'inwardly from the inner surface sov of the body? 10, as shown in Fig.; 3f; if desired,` i the supporting means may further include a projection 26 extending 'inwardly fr'oms-the inner surface Ofthebody lO at a point diametrically opposite to the slit 13 as shown in vBig. 6.
In practice, a supply of containersv or paper cups 27 arrangedin the formlof an i jection 426 if'the latter forms a part-ofthe device; with this arrangement; the lugs 25 or their equivalent project beneathandfengage the rim ofthe Vlower terminal cup while lthe periphery of the rirnof lsaid 'lower terminal cup is frictionally engaged' by the projection 26 so that the latter `cooperating with said lugs supports the stack or cont-ainer of cups in an upright position within the body 10 and the container 11 in the manner illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2. It will be noted that the nose 22 of the finger 19, in the normal position of the parts, is located in registry with the space between the rim of the lower terminal cup of the stack and the next succeeding cup thereof as shown in Fig. 1; To eject a cup from the dispensing device, the plunger' 17 isdepressed against the tension of the spring 18 and accordingly causes the nose 22 of the finger 19 to be `adjusted inwardly throu h the slit 123; during this adjustment of t e parts, the finger 19 moves lengthwise of the groove 14 and is maintained thereby against tilting sideways. Because of the curved form of the inner end of the finger19 and by reason of the compound form of the slot 23 in cooperation with the pin 24, the finger 19 is given a compound movement.l `In other words, the nose 22 of the finger describes an initial movement which issubstantially at right angles to the axis of the body 10` and brings it into contact withthe terminal cup at the lower end of the stack as shown in Fig'. 3, and then moves downwardly in a direction approximately parallel with said axis in the manner indicated in Fig. 4; because of this compound movement the nose 22 first presses the terminal cupjof the stack inwardly beyond the lugs 25 and then downwardly and thereby releases said terminal cup from the stack and permits it to drop through the exit end of the body, these steps in the ejecting operation beingclearlyshown in Figs. 3 and 4. At the same time the nose 22 will extend beneath the rim of the next succeeding cup A of the stack to prevent it from dropping out of the device and as the plunger 17 resumes its normal. position permits the succeeding cup which is now the terminal cup of the stack to come to rest upon the lugs 25. For convenience ahook '28 may be provided to receive the ej ecting cup as it drops from the body 10 as shown in Fig. 2.
The device is extremely simple in con-- struction and is positive in action se that the cups are positivelyl ejected in individual sequence as they successively vbecome the terminal cup at the lower end ofthe stack andat the same time the remaining cups of the` stacl; are maintained in the device against unintentional removal therefrom.
Various changes in the specific form shown and described may be made within the scope ofthe claims without departing from`the spirit of my invention.
