J. A. MORGAN EXHAUST SILENCER FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Nov. 18. 1926 F/GJ K P H B c D 5 PK QZLLEQJIIIIIIuni i J 5111MB? Patented Jan. 8, 1929.
JAMES AUGUSTUS MORGAN, OF NAMBOUR, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA.
EXHAUST SILENCER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed November 18, 1926. Serial No. 149,186.
This invention relates to exhaust silencers for internal combustion engines, and has for its object, more particularly, the production of an improved and simple device by which the noise made by the exhaust is very greatly, if not entirely, reduced, wlthout interfering with the power and efliclency 0f the engine. There is free outlet to the exhaust and no back pressure is caused.
In carrying out my invention I provide a cylinder of the required diameter and length,
in which a number of holed dies are equidistantly placed. An inlet and an outlet are formed in the respective heads of the cylinder.
In order that the invention may be better understood I will now describe it with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a part side, part-sectional elevation. V
Fig. 2 is an end sectional elevation.
Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The cylinder A is of the required diameter and length to suit the capacity of the engine.
. The discs B are equidistantly placed within the cylinder A, distance rings C being interposed between them so as to form compartments D, and they are each formed with a round hole E and an enlarged hole F, which latter is round at one end G and pointed or triangular at the other end H. The centre of the round end G of the hole F is diametrically opposite the round hole E, both holes being eccentrically placed. The heads J of the cylinder A each have a hole K, eccentrically placed, opposite the holes E in the discs B. The holes E and K are of approximately the same diameter. The discs B and rings C are rigidly secured in the cylinder A and the heads J are secured on the ends thereof by means of a bolt L (and nuts), which passes from end to end, and the discs B are prevented from turning round and the holes E and K and F kept in alignment by suitable means. The simplest arrangement is shown in the drawings, wherein the notches M engage with the ridge N onthe inside of the cylinder A.
Inlet and outlet nipples P are formed on the heads J and the exhaust pipe from the engine is connected to that on the inlet end or" the cylinder A.
In operation the exhaust gases from the engine enter through the inlet P to the first of the compartments D and as they pass from one compartment to the other the gases are battled and dissipated, the noise being gradually broken up and eventually silenced.
The dimensions of the various parts, Width, and number of the compartments D, and the size of the holes E, F and K depend on the capacity of the engine and may be varied as required.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature or" my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In an exhaust silencer for internal combustion engines, a cylinder, a cylinder head having an eccentrically placed aperture therein disposed on each end of said cylinder, a plurality of circular discs each having an eccentrically placed circular hole therein and an elongated hole semi-circular at one end and pointed at the other with the center of its semi-circular end eccentrically placed and diametrically opposite the center of the first named circular hole, said discs being spacedly arranged in said cylinder with the said circular holes in said disc and the circular holes in said cylinder head in alignment and means for retaining said discs in alignment.
2. In an exhaust silencer for internal combustion engines, a cylinder, a cylinder head disposed on each end of said cylinder having an eccentrically placed circular hole therein, a plurality of circular discs each having an eccentrically placed circular hole therein and an elongated hole eccentrically placed and diametrically opposite said circular hole, said discs being spacedly arranged within said cylinder with the said circular holes of said discs and the circular holes of said cylinder heads in aligmnent, means for retaining said discs in spaced relation, and means for retaining said discs in alignment.
3. In an exhaust silencer for internal combustion engines, a cylinder, a cylinder head disposed on each end of said cylinder having an eccentrically placed circular hole therein, means on one of said cylinder heads for connecting the exhaust pipe of the engine thereto, a plurality of circular discs Within spaced Within said cylinder with the said said cylinder, each having an eccentrieally circular holes of said disc and the circular placed circular hole therein and an elongated holes of said cylinder heads in alignment 10 hole semi-circular at one end and pointed at and means for securing the cylinder, the
B the other end eccentrically placed and diadiscs and the cylinder heads together.
metrically opposite the center of the first In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
named circular hole, said discs being equally JAMES AUGUSTUS MORGAN.
