UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.

DIESEL ENGINE.
Application. filed Marcht, 1927, Serial No. 174,042, and in Germany April 24, 1926.
In Diesel engines which operate with precompressed charging air to increase theirs efliciency, in the normal operation (without pre-compression) the pressure of the compression is chosen to be as low as possible-as far as this is still possible with respect to a secured ignition-in order to not have a too high end pressure of the compression, when the initial pressure is increased by said pre-compression. To maintain further the maximum pressure of the combustion within admissible limits, when pre-compressed air is used, a combustion under constant pressure has to be' aimed at if possible, whilst for the normal service (without pre-compression) and for a low end pressure of the compression a combustion under a somewhat increased pressure is to be aimed at, to obtain a good thermodynamic efficiency of the machine. As it is known, the course of the pressure arising during combustion may be influenced by suitably adjusting the pre-injection of the fuel. Now my invention has for its object to afford a means for automatically regulating, in machines in which the moment of inject-ion is determined by the fuel pump, the extent of the precompression in correspondence to the pre-injection of the fuel. This object is obtained according to my invention by automatically adjusting the rigging serving to determine the moment of the pre-injecti'on, b means of a controlling 'ciprocate in acy'li-nder N. The space a pi; s ton M is connected by a pipe 0 .to the pressure piping (not shown) of the pump suppiston which is un er the action of the precompressed' air.
In order that my invention may be more easily understood, a preferred embodiment of same'is diagrammatically illustrated in the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification.
Referring to this drawing, A denotes the fuel pumpof the Diesel engine the piston B of which pump is actuated by a cam disk D through the intermediary of a rod 0. The latter carries rollers on both its ends and is linked on one end by a rod E to a fixed point F, whilst its other'end maybe swung about a shiftable point H by intermediary of a link G. Point H is formedby one end of an angle lever J adapted to swing about a fixed point -K and the other end of which is connected to a, piston M byfa link L. Piston M ma reove provided the shaft R of which serves as an adjustable abutment for piston M.
The described device operates .as follows: When the pressure of the charging air is increased by pre-compression, the pressure prevailing in the piping connecting the blower and the machine is transmitted through pipe 0 to piston M, which is then lowered against the action of spring P until the force of the latter and the air pressure above the piston are in equilibrium. The downward motion of piston M causes the point H to swing to the right, as shown by dot and dash lines, through the intermediary of link L and bell crank lever J. Point H carries along with it to the right the upper roller of link 0, by means of link G. With the cam disk D rotating in the directionindicated by the arrow, this right-hand motion causes the upper roller of link C to ascend on the cam of disk D later. Consequently, the motion of the piston B of the fuel pump A, and therefore the supply of fuel and the injection period commence later. I
Of course, my invention is not limited to machines with which the entire combustion air is pre-c ompressed; it may on the contrary, be employed also with machines with which only that portion of the combustion air is pre-compressed that serves for the supplemental charge.
What I claim and desire ters-Patent, is
In a Diesel engine operated with pre-compressed charging air and pre-injection of the fuel, a fuel pump, a rod adapted to actuate said pump, a cam disk actuating said rod, a cylinder, a piston adapted to reciprocate therein and being under the pressure of the pre-compressed charging air, a yielding means adapted to act on said piston against the action of said air pressure, a rigging connected to said rod and to said piston to secure by Letand adapted to adjust said rod with rela- The foregoing specification signed at Hambung, Germany, this tenth day of February, 192
