W. E. RANNEY MORTISING MACHINE Original Filed Aug. 21 1924 Fatented Jan. 8, 1929.
UNH'I'E WILLIAM E. RANNEY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO PERFECTION MOBTISER I ivronrrsine MACHINE.
Application filed August 21, 1924, Serial No. 733,437. Renewed April 1'7, 192 8.
door or the like and including a power driven drill or bit having an oscillatory motion which upon operation will serve to produce within the edge of the door a mortise of desired formation, the operation being quickly accomplished'and in a labor and cost saving manner over ordinary methods.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the
invention consists in the novel featuresof construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended V for clamping engagement with the edge of a door 3 or other similar article; a'carriage 4 is slidably mounted on the frame for longitudinal travel thereon and carries a motor 5 which is employed to impart power to rotary and oscillatory bit 6. s The frame 2 is of substantially rectangular form and comprises a lower section 7 of sub stantially channel shaped formation, having spaced vertical side Walls whic-hreceive between them the edge of the door 3, as shown in Figure 2. In securing the frame in an applied posit-ion upon the door, the side walls of the lower section have their ends provided with threaded openings for the reception of clamping screws 8, which have their inner ends provided with heads 9 adapted to be frictionally engaged with the sides of the door upon the manipulation have their outer ends united by means of,
a transverse cross piece 11. This construction provides a frame of strong durable form and one capable of'withstanding the,
stresses and strains which are incident to the use of the machine. Slidably mounted upon the rods 10 is the carriage 4 which is preferably in the form of a casting having bowed side walls 13 and sleeve shaped outer extensions 14 suitably bored for the reception of the rods 10. By this construction the carriage 4 and associated parts will be se-' curely mounted wlt-hin the frame to'traverse the latter longitudinally. The longitudinal travel of the'carriage may be accomplished by the provision of a longitudinally extending feed screw 15, which has its threaded shank positioned within a threaded gland 16 formed in the carriage.
piece 11 and is equipped witha crank 17 capable of being'ma'nually rotated so as to cause the longitudinaltravel of the carriage.
Positioned within the carriage 12 between the bowed side walls 13 thereof is the motor 5, preferably of the electrictype and capable 2 The outer'end' of the feed screw is journaled in the crossof being operated by the employment of- I ordinary house voltages. The motor 5 is stationarily positioned within the carriage and has its inner end formed with a transverse shaft 19 journa1ed-in lateral bearings '20 provided in connection with the carriage. The shaft 19 is equipped with a beveled gear 21, arranged to mesh with a similar gear 22. The hub of the gear 22 is posi- 1 tioned for rotation within abearing 23 pro vided in a swinging yokeshaped bracket 24. The hub of the gear 22 is provided with a substantially tapered socket 25 adapted for the reception of the tapered upperend 26 of the removable bit 6. By the employment of this construction it will beseen that when the motor is energized rotary movement will be imparted to the bit by "the use of the gearing 21 and 22.
duce a mortise of required length, the upper end of the motor is provided with a speed reduction gearing (not shown), for the purpose of imparting relatively slow ro- In order to oscillate the bit so as to protary motion to a shaft 29 upon which is fixed for rotation a crank. 30. This crank housing 28 in which is positioned suitable q yoke shaped bracket swings about the axis of said shaft it will be apparent that power will be imparted to the bit in any position of "its path of oscillatory travel.
by reasonof the adjustable block 32, the
has its outer face provided with a longitudinal slot 31in which is adjustably clamped a block 32. This adjustable clamping of the block at any desired position within the I length of the slot 31 is accomplished by the provision of a screw 33, which is threaded into an opening formed in the block 32 and is shouldered as at 34 to frictionally engage with a binding washer 35. It. will be manifest that by tightening the screw the block may be positioned at any point in thelcngth of the slot 31. The outer end of the screw 33 isv enlarged to provide a bearing for the outer end' of a link 36, which link has itsjinnerend pivoted as at 37 to a crank- 38 extending outwardly from the yoke bracket '24, which is journaled for oscillatory movement upon the shaft 19' of .travel, however, of the bit is materially low, and this is accomplished through the slow turning crank 30 which-oscillates the yoke bracket 24v and the bit 6. Since the drive gear 21 is located on the shaft 19, and the Further,
effective throwof the'crank 30 may be varied so that the path of travel of the bit may be adjusted to produce a mortise of desired length, In the event that the bit is merely employed for boring holes, the block is positio ne'd so that the screw 33 is axially aligned with the shaft 29.
What is claimed is:
r 1. In a mortising machine, a frame, a carriage mounted upon said frame for longitudlnal travel, a motor stationarily p0sitl'oned'upon said carr age, a bit, power trans- Y missionidevices between said motor and bit,
andmeans for oscillating operation of said motor.
2.' In" a mortising machine, a frame, a carriage on said frame movable longitudisaid bit during the nally thereof, a motor mounted stationarily on said carriage, a bit, power transmission devices between said motor and bit permitting of the oscillation of said bit relative to said motor, and means for oscillating the bit.
3. In a mortising machine, a frame, a carriage slidable on said frame, a motor stationarily supported on said carriage, a bit, power transmission devices between said motor and bit for rotating and oscillating said bit by power derived from said motor, and means for effecting sliding movement of the carriage on said frame.
