PRODUCTION OF METALLIC BODIES BY A COMBINED CASTING AND PRESSING PROCESS.
Application filed November 19, 1926, Serial No. 149,487, and in Germany March 20, 1926.
The present invention relates to the art of producing metallic articles by means of a combined casting and pressing operation and the object of the invention is to provide improvements in the process as hitherto practised, mainly by providing and employing a simple and eflicient pressing device comprlsinga press-plunger for displacing a predetermined quantity of molten metal from a suitable container upwards into a mould attached to the said plunger, and compressing the metal in the mould at the end of the displacing movement or stroke imparted to the plunger for the purpose.
In this way sundry kinds of metallic bodies such as cages, rings or casings for rolling bearings and the like may be manufactured in a manner that e. g. the openings or cavities in said casings for the accommodation of the rolling bodies do notrequire to be trued up notwithstanding the fact that all of'the faces concerned must be very accurate in a rolling hearing. I
With the above recited object in view, the
' invention resides in the novel features, set
forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the drawing in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of a device for carrying out the invention but which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the said claims, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiment other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
The accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, is a sectional view of the said device shown for purposes of exemplification and adapted for use and in connection with an eccentric press of usual construction.
The device comprises a plate 0 having a cen-' tral aperture and shaped to form an elevated annular rim 0 encircling the said aperture. The rim 0 fits in the bottom opening of the mould b so as to closethe same, as required,
while. the annular bottom face of the mould b rests upon the plate 0 adjacent to and in contact with the peripheral face of the rim 0.
Mounted on a suitable reciprocable-support is a vessel d'for receiving and supplying a certain predetermined amount of molten metal to the mould and which is shaped to fit in thecentral aperture of the plate 0 from beneath so that its annular edge is in closing contact with the overlying rim 0. The plunger 66 passing through the top of the mould I). cooperates with the latter in the manner of a core to form or constitute an annular moulding cavity 6.
The operation of casting under pressure is as follows:
The vessel 03 is placed on the table of an eccentric press (not shown) and the mould b is placed on the plate 0 to snugly fit'and en close the rim 0 projecting therefrom and to be secured and closed thereby partially at the bottom end in correctly centered position. The vessel d is filled with molten metal whereupon the table supporting the vessel is caused to ascend and the vessel in turn is caused thereby to engage in the aperture of the plate 0 from beneath until the upper edge or rim of the vessel occupies the position shown in the drawing, that is in closing with the rim 0 of the plate 0. I
It will be seen that the vessel containing the molten metal or alloy and the inner space or cavity of the mould are in full communica tion with each other when the plunger is in its raised position. Now when the vessel 01 has been raised to occupy the position shown,
' the core or plunger will be. caused to descend from its raised or uppermost position to its lowermost position thereby displacing molten metal from the vessel and forcing the same up into the annular cavity 0 .of the mould. At
the end of the downward movement of the plunger 21. sharp-edged annular rib f of the same co-operates with the opposite sharp edge of the rim 0' to sever the compressed molten metal in the annular cavity e from the residual metal in the vessel. d, as will be readily understood on inspection of the drawing.
The plunger a is subsequently moved in upward direction in order to disengage from the mould so that the latter may be removed when the casting therein has hardened sufliciently. Upon removal of the mould from the plate 0 the casting will be pushed out and discharged from the mould in the usual manner. The invention is particularly applicable for the production of annulararticles or bodies to be made of brass, bronze or similar alloys of a comparatively high melting temperature and an essential feature of the present invention resides in the fact that the molten metal is suddenly injected into the mould with great, force so that it will fill out the mould cavity in a most complete manner and e. g. in a rolling body for rolling bearings I cast body.
What I claim is 1. A device for manufacturing metallic bodies under pressure comprising, a mould, a vessel adapted to contain molten metal disposed below said mould, a plungeradapted to pass through said mould into said vessel and displace the molten metal from said vessel into the cavities of said mould.
2. A device for manufacturing metallic bodies, comprising, a. mould having a reciproeating plunger therein, a vessel adapted to contain molten metal disposed adjacent said mould, said plunger being adapted to descend and project into said vesseLand displace the molten metal from said vessel into the cavities of said mould, and means for severingthe compressed molten metal from the residual metal in the vessel.
3. A device for manufacturing metallic bodies under pressure comprising a plate having a central aperture therein, an elevated annular rim encircling and projecting over the edge of said aperture. a mould having its lower'annular face resting on said plate adjacent to and in contact With the peripheral face of said annular rim, said rim being adapted to project into the opening of said mould, a vessel disposed in a supporting member-adapted to contain molten metal having an annular edge shaped to fit in the central aperture'of said plate from beneath, said annular edge of said vessel being adapted to engage the projecting portion of said annular rim of said plate and form a closedcontact, a plunger adapted to pass through said mould into said vessel and displace the molten metal from said vessel into the cavity of the mould.
4. A device for manufacturing metallic bodies under pressure comprising a plate having a central aperture therein, an elevated annular rim encircling and projecting over the edge of said aperture, a mould having its lower annular face resting on said plate adjacent to and in contact with the peripheral face of said annular rim, said rim being adapted to project into the opening of said mould, a vessel disposed ona supporting member adapted to contain molten metal having an annular edge shaped to fit in the central aperture of said plate from beneath, said annular edge of said vessel being adapted to engage the projecting portion of said annular rim of said plate and form a closed contact, a plunger adapted to pass through said mould into said vessel and act as a core therein,'and a sharp edged annular rib on said plunger adapted to cooperate with the edge of the annular rim of said plate, Whereby upon projection of the end of said plunger into said vessel the molten metal is displaced from said vessel into the cavity .of
the mould and the compressed molten. metalis severed from the vessel.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature HERMANN BARTHEL.
