Our invention relates to driving units, and
particularly toa portable drivingnnit com:
prising an internal combustion engine, a reand ack shaft structure all mounted'on a common support. The object of the invention is to provide a simple,
duc-ti on gear-in I compact and substantial arrangement in which the high speed of the engine is reduced down to a powerful rotation of the jack shaft, one of the features being the parallel arrangement of all the shafts so that balanced operation results. The various features of our invention will become apparent from the following detailed description in connection with the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation-a1 View;

The supporting base of the driving unit, s1on frictionis reduce'dto a minimum and the nates in a pinion 7. The shaft extends through the housings 8 and 9, the pinion being within the housing 9. Journaled 1n the front and rear walls of the housing 9, to one 7 30 side of and parallel with the engine shaft, is the counter-shaft 10, which within the housing 9 has secured thereto the annular gear 11 with which the engine pinion 7 meshes, as 7 clearly shown in Fig. 2. Outside of the housing" 9., the countershaft 10 carries the driving pinion 12 and the shaft may also carry a fly- Wheel 13. v
Mounted on the beams 1 and 5, respectively, are the pedestal bearing structures .14: and 15, in which is j ournaled the jack shaft 16, which is parallel with the engine shaft and with the counter-shaft 6 and 10, respectively. In alignment with the driving pinion 12 the jack shaft carries the large gear 17 which meshes with the pinion, and this gear and pinion are enclosed in a housing structure 18 suitably supported on the unit base. The arrangement is clearly shown in Fig. 2, and also in i Fig. 3 where the fly-wheel has been omitted.
By means of the annular gear 11 and the large gear 17, the high speed of the engine pinion is reduced downto slow and powerful rotation of the jack shaft 16. The jack shaft is therefore capable of performing very heavy on the crank structure'bymeans of aseries'of supporting holes 21. In practice this crank structure has been connected with the work-v ing beam of large drills or pumps used in the oil fields, and can be as readily'used'for' other tus may be driven by means ofa chain. All the supporting parts, bearing parts and meansof the groove 23 and set housing parts are made heavy and strong in order to withstand the heavy work required, and as all the shafts are parallel, transmisunit operation is balanced and smooth. The
further stabilizes and balances the operation. The strong and rigid construction of the supporting base structure permits the unit to be readily transported or shifted from one position toanother so that connection can be very readily made with the work to be performed. v r
We have thusp-roduced a very powerful and efficient driving unit, and we claimas follows i 1. housing secure-d to'the motor frame enclosing said gear pinion, a counter shaft journaled in said housing parallel with the *niotor shaft structure, an internal gear on said counter shaft within said housing and meshing with said. pinion, a transmission pinion on 'the countershaft outside of said housing, bearing supports mounted on said base along the'opposite side thereof, a jack shaft journaled in said bearing structures and extending paral lel with said motor shaft structure, a gear carried on said jack shaft and meshing withsaid transmission pinion, a housing supported on said base andenclosing said transmission pinion and said shaft gear, a power transmission element in the formofa crank structure purposes. We also provide on the jack shaft a sprocket pinion .22, from which apparaj secured to the outer end of said jack shaft,
and a transmission gear shiftable on said jack shaft between said bearing structures.

A unitary driving structure comprising a supporting base, 7 an internal combustion motor mounted on said base along one side thereof, a gear pinion secured'to the outer end of the motor driving shaft struoture, a,housing secured to the motor frame enclosing said gear pinion, acounter shaft journaled in said housing parallel Wltllthfl motor shaft structure, an internal gear on said counter shaft 1 Within said housing and meshing with said pinion, a transimssion pinion on the counter shaft outside of said hous1ng,bear1ng supports mounted on said base along the opposite side thereof, a jack shaft 1' ournaled in said bearing structures and extending parallel with said motor shaft'structure, a gear carried on said jack shaft and meshing with said transmission pinion, a housing supported on said base and enolosing said transmission pinionand said shaft gear, and a power transmission element in the form of a crank structure secured to the outer end of said jack shaft.
