DRILLING APPARATUS.
Application filed J'uJy 22,
This invention relates to new and useful im rovements in a drilling apparatus;
8m; object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the, character described comprising arotatable stem, a drilling tool associated therewith, and a hammer associated .with the stem and operable-thereby and adapted to strike said tool with successive blows, as said stem is rotated to effect l taken on the line 4-4 of Figur the abrasion or disintegration by said tool of the formation at .the bottom of the bore.
Another object ofthe invention'is to provide an apparatus of the character described in which the drilling tool is independently rotatable with respect to the stem but which may be clutched, or interlocked therewith so as to'rotate, as a unit with-said stem.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to cere 4 is a transverse sectional view e 1. Figure 5 shows a bottom view of the bit, and Figure 6 shows a fragmentary vertical. sectional view of the apparatus.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein, like numerals of refer-.
'ence designate similar parts in each of the figures the numeral 1 designates a tubular drill stem which is adapted t9 be rotated by the usual rotary drilling machine. Attached to the lower end of this drill stem there is a tubular drill collar 2. There is a drilling tool embodyingthe bit' 3, and the separable shank 4 which extends up into the drill collar 2. The collar 2 has an inside shoulder 5' and the shank of the drilling tool has a corresponding external shoulder.6. In assemblmg, the shank of the drilling tool is inserted down through the drill collar 2 and the bit of the drillin tool is then attached tosaid shank and the rill collar then attached .to the stem 1. The shoulders 5 and 6 will revent the detachment of the drilling tool from the drill collar. The shoulders 5 and 6 are formed with clutch jaws 5, 6 adapted a special couplin 1926. Serial no. 124,142.
.to engage to lockthe drilling tool to rotate with the drill stem, and to be disengaged, to release said drilling tool so that the stem may rotatefindependent of it;
I g 7. having a polygonal openlng 8' therethrough and within the drill stem there is a vertically reciprocable hammer 9, havin'g'a polygonal section 10 which Incorporated into the drillstem 1 there is conforms in shape to and works through the opening 8, and forms an operativeconnec- 'tion between the hammer and stem whereb the former is rotated by the latter.
Means .have been provided for alternately lifting which may be employed will now be described The-lower end {0f the hammer 9 abuts the upper end of .the shank 4 and these respec-' tive abutting ends have the oppositely di s posed correspondingly'inclined faces 11,-11
and sitely arranged, vertically disposed abrupt shoulders 13, 13 and 14', 14 respectively, the
' shoulders 13 facing in a ,direction the opposite of thatof the-shoulders 14.
ing on 17119 bit 3 the clutch jaws of the shoulders 5 and 6 will-be disengaged and as the stem 1 is rotated the hammer 9 will rotate with it' and the faces 11 will ride up on the faces 12 elevating the hammer '9, until the shoulders 13 pass" the shoulders .14 and the hammer 9 will then drop thus striking the upper endof the shank 12, 12, which terminate in the oppo! 4 in rapid suc- In operation with the drill collar2 restcession and driving the bit 3 against-the for-,
mation at the bottom of the ore and disintegrating the same. The sloping faces 11 striking the sloping faces 12 will impart a partialrotation-to the drilling tool, so that as drilling proceeds the bit at the bottom of the bore.
If a be desired to rotate the drilling tool the stem may be slightly 1 with the stem, elevated until said clutch jaws 5, 6' engage and the desired result thus While the bit is thus rotated the. weight of the drilling tool and hammer 9 will rest on the bottom of the bore and this weight will be suflicient to cause the bit the formation at the bottofn of the bore. The hammer and drilling toolhave'water accomplished.-
p 3 will slowly turn and thus abrade away said formation,
to disintegrate be supplied to flush away the bit cuttings" J the hammer and permitting the same to drop and strike the vdrilling tool. One form of such means,
courses '15 and 16 through which water mayternal s and the latter of which separatesso as to discharge water on each side of thecenter of the bore being formed. a What I claim is:
A drilling apparatus including a stem, a tubular drill collar attached to the lower end ofthe stem, a drilling tool embodying a bit and a separable shank which extends up into the drill collar, said collar having an inside shoulder and said shank having an opposin external shoulder above said ininto the stem havin a polygonal bearing therethrough, a vertical reciprocable ham-' mer within the stem having a polygonal section which works through said bearing and forms an operative connection between the hammer and stem, the lower end of the hammer and the upper end of the shank being provided with opposite correspondingly inclined faces which terminate in oppositely arranged vertically disposed, abrupt shoulders, the shoulders of the hammer facing in a direction the o posite of that of the shoalders of the sha 1 oulder, a coupling incorporating In testimony whereof I- have signed my name to this specification.
