EXTIRUSION PRESS.
Application filed December-8, 1927. serial m).- 238,570.
This invention relates to apparatus for extruding rods, mouldings and the like from heated billets of metal or fromother plastic substances such as terracotta.
One purpose of this invention is to provide a means of producing embossed ornamentation upon the material being extruded while it is in a plastic state, that is before it has emerged from the die and startedto set.
A further object of this invention is to control the production of the embossed ornamentation so that the distance between successive recurring patterns will be uniform.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting the product after it leaves the die, until it hardens.
Other objects will be made apparent in the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings: Fig. 1 is a plan View of one form of extrusion press equipped with the fea tures forming the subject of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the press shownv in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, is a partial section similar to Fig. t showing a modification;- Fi '(is a section on line 77 of Fig. 6 and Flg. 8 is a section on line 88 of Fig'4..
In the type of press shown horizontal tie rods 1 pass thro gh and maintain in fixed relation a main cylinder casting-2 and a thrust block 3. The main piston 4 which works in the cylinder carries the pusher plug 5 which enters the bi llet'receiving chamber 6, best shown in Fig.4, and forces the material to be extruded through the channel'Z-in the dies It may be stated that the proportions of said channel 7 will be dependent on the material to be extruded.
The die 8 is held in a die block 40. which rests against the thrust block 3. and may con"- Veniently be constructed of several sections 9 forease in machining and to allow the placing of an ornamental wheel die 10 which is secured to a shaft 11 which shaft projects through the die block to the outside thereof on one or both sides and is conveniently mounted in adjustably located bearings 12 .by the remainder of the die sections 9 so that there can be no distortion due to the impres sion of the ornamental wheel die 10.
This channel 13 through which the material passes after leaving the ornamental die wheel 10 may provide for clearance for the product or not, depending on the material being extraded. l Y
-A buffer plate 14 with clearance for the product is conveniently provided between the die and the thrust block 3 toreinforce die 8 and billet receiving chamber 6 The rotation of the ornamental wheel-die 10 is controlled by means actuated by the extruded product itself. In order to commence this action as soon as the first of the product is formed, a bar 15 having one end 16 of about the same section as the opening in .the die is inserted in channel 13 to about the center of the ornamental wheel die 10. When the extruded. product starts, it forces the bar 15 in a rearward direction and by means such as a yoke or arm 17 secured to the bar 15 and. said yoke 17 having pins 18 secured thereto adapted to fit into chains 19 which in turn operate sprockets 20 and the shaft 11 on which said sprockets 20 are mounted, the ornamental wheel die 10, also mounted on said shaft 11 is caused to rotate. It will be noted that the pitch diameter ofthe sprockets 20 should be the same as the outside diameter of ornamental wheel die 10. The chains 19 are maintained in working position by adjustably mounted idler sprockets 21 supported by standards indicated'as a Whole at 41.
To prevent the product from becoming dislocated from the end of bar 15 after emerging from the channel 13 and buffer plate 14, a sleeve 22 having a cupped end 23 surrounds the bar 15. Said sleeve 22 is maintioned until the end of the product has entered within the cupped end 23 of the sleeve 22, at which time the sleeve 22 is forced by a spring 29 so as to disengage the detent 22, whereupon the sleeve 22 travels with the bar 15 maintaining the alignment of the product with the bar 15 by means of the surrounding cup 23.
v A pan 30 may convemently be mounted so as to provide a coolant or other soliditier for the product as it emerges from the machine.
A modification is shown in Figs. 6 and 7 in that a mating wheel die 31 is installed on the opposite side of the product from that occupied by the ornamental wheel die 10. By this construction auniform thickness of product may be maintained although the product have an embossed pattern thereon. Although only one pair of mating die wheels are shown it is understood that any number might be used.
In Fig. 7 the die wheel shafts 32 anad 33, mounted in bearings 34 are shown provided with gears 35 and 36 meshing with a drive gear 37 which may be driven by a chain as before described or by any; adjustable speed drive indicated in general by sprocket wheel 38. i
It is also within the scope of this invention that the mating wheel die 31 might be replaced by an unembossed wheel if desired to aid in the travel of the product through the machine, especially inthe case of a very hard product, even though it he not required that the/reverse side of the prod not be given a different outline than that given it by the non-rotating portion of the c 1e.
In operation the billet or material to he extruded is placed inthe chamber 6 and the ram 5 is then advanced into the chamber by the piston 4 operated by any kind of fluid pressure. This forces the material through the die, and as it passes the design is impressed thereon by, rotation of the wheel 10. As the product leaves the die it is received by the cup 23 and sleeve 22 and passes therewith into the cooling pan 30 from which it may be removed in any suitable way.
I claim:
1. The combination in an extrusion press, of a die including a rotary member, a shaft on which said member is mounted, a, rod
located in line with the outletfrom the die and adapted to be moved by the product as it is discharged fromlthe diefand drivingconnections between therod and the shaft. i
2. The combination stated in claim 1, said driving connections including a sprocket chain operatively connected to the shaft and a projection carried by the rod and engageable with said chain.
3. In an extrusion press the combination of a thrust block having an opening, a die resting against the thrust block with its outlet in line with said opening and provided with a wheel member for ornamenting the product, a rod working in said opening, and
having a cupped sleeve at its inner end to receive the product after it. passes the die, and driving'connectiions between the rod and the wheel member.
1. The combination stated in claim 3, the sleeve being adjustably mounted on the 'rod,
5. The combination stated in claim 3, the sleeve having a pawl and ratchet connection to the rod.
6. The combination stated in claim 3, the sleeve being adjustable on the rod, and a releaseable stop engaging the sleeve to hold it in initial position.
7 The combination stated in claim 3, the die block having a stop, and the sleeve having a projection engageable with said stop in initial position and disengageable therefrom after the rod is moved to a certain extent.
8. In an extrusion press, the combination of a thrust block having an opening, a die resting against said thrust block with its outlet in line with said opening, and including a wheel member to ornament the product, a shaft on which the Wheel member is mounted, a sprocket chain operatively connected to the shaft, a rod located in said opening and movable by contact of the product as it leaves the die, and an arni attached to the rod and engageable with the chain to drive the same and the shaft as the product is delivered from the die.
9. The combination stated in claim 8, and a slidablesupport for the rod adapted to move therewith after a certain amount. of product has been delivered.
In testimony whereof, I do afiix my signature.
