My invention relates to improvements in door checks. V I In accordance with my invention, I provide a door check embodying a shock ab- 6 sorbing device which is carried by the door frame, and a connecting or coupling device carried by the door. Means are provided whereby the engagement between the coupling device and the shock absorbing device, is automatically broken, when the door has been moved outwardly to a selected position, thus rendering the door free for convenient and easy movement, throughout the remain der or major portion of its opening or closing movement. The device is extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and reliable in operation.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the top of the door frame or jamb and 6 a horizontally swinging door.
The door check embodies a shock absorbing device including a horizontally arranged cylinder 7, extending transversely of the door jamb, and provided at its top with apertured arms or brackets 8, for attachment to the door jamb, through the medium of screws 9, or the like. The cylinder 7 has a plunger 10 mounted to slide therein, and having a substantially air-tight fit with the same. This plunger is connected with a rod 11, slidable within a bearing 12, and having a loose fit therein, so that air may readily pass into the cylinder 7 about the rod 11. The cylinder 7 is provided near its rear end with a contracted opening 13, which permits of the retarded entrance and escape of the air to and from the cylinder 7, upon the rear side of the plunger 10. The plunger rod 11 is provided at its forward end with a head 14, rigidly secured thereto. The forward face of this head is tapered or inclined and the head has a straight rear shoulder 15.
The connecting or coupling device is carriedl by the door 6 and embodies a plate or leaf 16, ordinarily horizontally arranged, and this leaf or plate is equipped with knuckles 17, for co-action with a knuckle 1 8, formed upon a vertical leaf 19, which is rigidly attached tot-he door 6, by screws 20, or the like. The knuckles 17 and 18 are pivotally held together by means of a pivot element, which may be in the form of a cotter-pin 21. This cotter-pin is adapted for connection with a spring, which may be employed to close the door. The plate 16 can not drop below. the horizontal position, since it is equipped with a stop 16, rigidly attached thereto, and adapted to engage with. a leaf 19. Preferably formed integral with the plate 16 is a substantially vertical depending engaging tongue 22, adapted for coaction with the head 14, in a manner to be described. Also preferably formed integral with the plate 16 is a releasing arm 23 which is normally horizontally arranged and provided at its free end with a depending trip extension or cam 24:. The trip extension 24 is adapted to be brought into engagement with a stationary trip 25, arranged in the path of travel of the same, and the trip 25 is rigidly attached to the cylinder 7.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When the door 6 is moved toward the closed position, the engaging tongue or element 22 is brought into engagement with the forward tapered face of the head 14, and will ride over the same, and the tongue 22 will then drop behind the shoulder 15. The head 14: will now engage the leaf 19, and the continued closing movement of the door 6 will shift the plunger 10 rearwardly, and the movement of this plunger is opposed by the gradually escaping air through the port or opening 13. The action of the plunger will, therefore, prevent the sudden closing or slamming of the door. \Vhen the door is partly opened, the tongue 22 will engage behind the shoulder 15, and the plunger 10 is now moved forwardly, but in a retarded manner, as the air must enter the cylinder through the contracted opening 13. \Vhen the door has been opened for a short distance, the trip or cam 24 will ride upon the trip 25, swinging plate 16 upwardly, which raises the engaging tongue or element 2-3 so that it will clear the shoulder 15. The further opening movement of the door causes a disengagement between the tongue'22 and the head 14, whereby the opening movement of the iyyithoqt the action of the plunger 10 and associated elements.
