SPRING PAD FOR PRESSING MACHINES I Filed NOV. 24, 1926 IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 25, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT vor-FICE HARRY ALBERT STEELE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE PROSPERITY COMPANY INC., OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SPRING PAD FOR PRESSING MACHINES.
Application filed November 24, 1926. Serial No.4 150,605.
This invention relates to spring pads for pressing machines and has for its object a particularly simple and eiiici'ent spring arrangement by which the springs are as- Y iembled and held as a unitary structure without a multiplicity of fastening means so that the padding in use is particularly economical in construction.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters represent corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a padding embodying my invention, the same being applied to the buck of a pressing machin Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan View of this padding, the outer covering being omitted.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, the
padding being omitted.
This padding comprises generally a plurality of coiled springs lying on their sides with their coils inclined, the coils of each spring being interlaced with the coils of the next spring. Preferably the padding also includes aplate to which the coils are-secured at the-ir ends, and being secured at their ends are held under some` tension whichy tends to hold the springs with their coils at an 'incline to the plate, so that when pressure is applied to thesprings the coils will swing toward the plate and assume at angles of less inclination to the plate.
l designates the coil springs lying side by side with their coils interlaced as at 2 with the coils of the adjacent springs. 3 is` the plate onwhich the springs are laid side by side with their coils at an inclineto the plate. As seen in Figure 1 the lowermost portions ofthe end Vcoils at like ends of the springs are secured as at 4 to the plate 3, and the uppermost por# tionsof the coils at the other ends of the to the plate in this manner.v Owing to theoverlaid'with another layer 7 of facing 1na' terial, which is sometimes woven wire cloth 7. 1n Operation the padding is applied to the 'buck 8 in any well known manne-r. The buck 8, as will be understood by those skilled in the art, is carried by or formed integral with, the goose neck 9 rising from a base 10, which is secured to the table or frame of a pressing machine. The construction of the buck forms no part of this invention.
This spring pad is'particularlyadvantageous in that owing to the spring arrangement, 1t is very simple and economical in construction and at the same time owing to the multiplicity of resilient elements, that is the coils of the springs and their arrangement, the padding is particularly efficient and d'urable in use and any portion thereof readily yields independently of the other poiftions or conforms to unevennesses in the garment or other article being pressed. s
What I claim is l A spring pad construe-tion for pressing machines comprising a plate, a plurality of coiled springs lying on their sides on the plate, the lower portions of the end coils 01" the springs at like ends of the springs being securedto the plate and the top portions of the end coils at the other ends of the springs being secured to the plate whereby the springs Vare tensioned with their coils at Ian incline to the plate, so that the coils when under pressure swing toward the pla-te, and the coils of each spring interlacing through the coils of the next springthe intermediate coils between the end coils being free of and slidably engaging'the plate.
In testimony Whereo I have hereunto signed my name, fat Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, Ithis 21st day 4of September, 1926.y
f HARRYALBERT STEELE.
