POTATO-PICKING BELT.

This invention relates to a belt for facilitating the gathering of potatoes and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for suspending a bar from a belt to which a sack may be attached in such a manner that the user can straddle the sack and thus use both hands in picking up the potatoes and placing them in the sack, the mouth of which is held in a convenient position to receive the potatoes.
Another object of the invention is to provide means at the rear of the belt for holding a number of empty sacks, so that when a sack has been partly filled, it may be detached from the bar and another sack put in its place.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed kout in the appended claims.
Tn describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view showing the invention in use.

ln these views, l indicates a belt which is preferably formed of webbing and which has attached to one end thereof the perforated straps 2 which form tongues and buckle carrying straps 3 are fastened to the other end and are adapted to receive the tongues so that the belt can be fastened around the waist of the user, as shown in Figure 1. Straps 5 are fastened to the sides of the belt and these straps will be convergently arranged at the front of the wearer when the belt is being worn. A snap hook 6 is carried by each strap 5 and the length of each strap 5 can be adjusted by means of the buckle 7. A bar 8 is provided. with the eyes 9 for receiving the snap hooks 6, the eyes extending at an angle from the upper outer corner of the bar so that the bar will rest flatly against the legs of the user when he is in a stooping position, as shown in Figure l. This will prevent a corner of the bar from resting against the legs of the user, which would be uncomfortable and apt to injure him. A pair of hooks 10 is carried by the bar and these hooks are adapted to be hooked into the mouth of a sack A.
A pair of hooks 11 is fastened to the rear of the belt and these hooks are adapted' to carry a number of empty sacks, as shown in Figure l. The belt may be reinforced, as shown at 12, where the hooks 11 are fastened thereto.
F rom the foregoing, it will be seen that this device will support a sack between the limbs of the user, with portion of the sack `dragging upon the ground and with its mouth open so that the user can pick up the potatoes or other articles with both hands andplace them in the sack without difiiculty and as he walks along in a stooping position he can drag the sack along with him. When the sack is half full, it is removed from the bar and one of the empty sacks taken off the hooks 1l and placed on the hooks on the bar so that it can partly be filled with potatoes.
This device will enableV a picker to pick up potatoes and the like very much quicker than he could by simply dragging a sack along with him by one hand, as this device leaves both hands free to pick up the potatoes.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is z*- 1. A device of the character described comprising a belt, straps attached to the sides of the belt and depending therefrom in converging relation, a cross bar of substantially rectangular formation in cross section, eyes projecting from the forward longitudinal edge of the bar and at an angle thereto and having detachable association with said straps, said bar being adapted to rest against the limbs of the wearer directly above the knees, and hooks depending.' from the lower longitudinal edge of the bar and adapted to engage the mouth of :i bag adapted to pass between the limbs of the wearer for movement along the ground.
