PACKING AND METHOD OF MARIN G THE SAME.
Application filed larch 18, 1924. Serial No. 700,183.
A strip or sheet of cork constitutes an excellent component for a packing. However, packing is of curved form and cork does not lend itself to commercial manufacture in that a form because it is'brittle when dry and when wet it swells and in thereafter drying and shrinking interferes with the production of packing of the desired or required cross-sectional size and shape. hr 1 Objects of the present invention are to provide a curved cork packing and to manufacture the same commercially and satisfactorily.
The invention will be claimedat the end hereof but will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings form-- in part hereof and in which %1 ure 1 is a perspective view of'a socalled cork packing embodying features of 2 the invention, and
' Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of thepackigg shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings the acking consists of strips of cork 1 and strips of vulcanizable 26 fabric Qattached to the cork and imparting flexibility toit even when dry, and the flexible strips 2am vulcanized in curved form andretain the curved -form imparted to the cork stri s. The flexible strips 2 may consist of dual: or asbestos and rubber and they are shown in alternation with strips of cork, the fabric strips 2 being at the top and bottom faces of the packing.
In the manufacture of the packing the M straight cork strips of generall rectangular cross-section are cemented as y rubber ce ment to the vulcanizable fabric strips and'in bending the assemblage into curved. form,
mandrel, the
which is usuall done by winding it around a b ending force is distributed throughout the cork strip and upon vulcanization the fabric or flexible strips 2 are set in curvedform and preserve the curved form imparted to the cork strips. In some instances some of the pores in the cork are occupied by particles of the vulcanized rubher, Since the packing can be bent dry Without unduly rupturing the cork strips or break-- ing them it can be expeditiously and cheaply manufactured to the required'size and shape in cross-section.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifi- 2. The method of making a curved cork packing which consists in distributing the bending force throughout the cork strip by reinforcing it with a connected vulcanizable flexible strip, applying bending force to the connected-strips 1n theplane thereof, and i then vulcanizing the bent flexible strips to preserve the curved form of the cork strip CLEMENT REs'rE ia-j v I
