Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,540, dated November 2, 1875; application filed October 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. HARVEY, of Memphis, Scotland county, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Medical Oompound, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the curative art; and consists of a compound for the cure of catarrh, composed of the ingredients hereinafter named, combined in about the proportions specified.
To carry out my invention I proceed as follows: I take of powdered nitrate of potassa, six ,dr'ams; powdered chlorate of potash, six drams; powdered golden seal, (botanioally known as Hydmstis Oanadensis,) four drams table-salt, six drams; gum-camphor, two drams. These ingredients are thoroughly mixed together in one pint of water, and heated over a slow fire until the compound is raised to the boiling-poinhor 212. It is now allowed to settle, and is poured off from the dregs, and water enough is added to make about a full quart.
This liquid is used for bathing the head and nose; but when the compound is used for inhaling it may be used in a dry state, as may be desired.
I do not confine myself to the exact proportions used, as they may be varied Without departing from my invention. 7 The compound is used as a sovereign cure for the disease known as catarrh, and may be applied as may be found admissible, either to be'inhaled in a dry state or be used for bathing the head and nose, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The medical compound for the cure of catarrh herein described, consisting of nitrate of potassa, chlorate of potash, golden seal, common salt, and gum-camphor, in. about the proportions herein specified.
