My invention relates to type-cleaning attachments for typewriting machines.

To clean the. types, the operator uses a detachably fastened to a fixed part of a frontstrike .typewriting machine and be used without soiling the operatives hands.

A further feature'is the provision of a device for cleaning the type when the front of the typewriter is closed, such as in the case where an adding machine is attached to the typewriter. In carrying out my invention,

a clamp-carrying bracket is detachablyfastened to the type-guide of an Underwood typewriting machine anda suitable brush 1s clamped in said bracketin posltion to be struck by thet-ypes when the keys of the ma chine are depressed in the usual way.

A further feature of my invention is the provision of means for adjustably mounting a cleaning brush so that, as parts of the brush become worn, the brush may be adjusted on its support to present an unused portion for engagement with the type.

Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In an Underwood typewriting machine, it is usual to pivot a key-lever 10 on a fulcrumrod 11, supported on the main frame (not shown), and to return the key-lever by a spring 12 to normal position after operation. A bell-crank 13 transmits motion of the keylever 10 to the type-bar 14, pivoted about a fulcrum-rod 15, fixed on a stationary typesegment 16, which is fastened to the main frame. The type-bar is swung upwardly to strike through a ribbon 17 vibrated by mechanism (not shown), against a platen 18 each time a key 20 on the key-lever 10 is depressed.

Atype-guide 21, having: two forwardly-proectm g wings 22 at its top, is fastened rigidly to the segment 16, as usual in an Underwood typewriting' machine. A brush-holding bracket, generally designated. as 23, has two integral side elements 24 formed of sheetmetal to engage closely about the sides of the type-guide 21 and extend forwardly therefrom. The forward portions of the elements 24 are bent inwardly to form a U-shaped flange 25 having clamping ends 26 arranged for fitting closely'in lengthwise grooves 27 of a type-cleaning; brush, generally designatedas 28. I I s For helping to hold the bracket 23 securely on the type-guide 21, especially against rearward movement, a horizontal pocket 29 1s formed ad acent the top of the bracket by bending a strip 30, which is integral with the side elements 2.4, downwardly and rearwardly in such way that the pocket formed thereby will fit closely against the wings 22 on the front and lower sides thereof, as shown in Figure 1. For detachably fastening the- ,bracket 23 in place on the type-guide 21, a spring-latch 31 is fastened to the front wall of the pocket 29 and extends rearwardly therefrom and terminates in a tab or detentmember 32 arranged to snap down behind the top of the type-guide 21. An operator may release the latch 31 and remove the typecleaning attachment by simply pressing upwardly on the tab 32, and pulling forwardly and upwardly on thebrush 28.

To use my type-cleaning attachment, it is only necessary for the operative to depress the key 20 and swing the type-bar 14 up tothe dotted-line position of the latter, as shown in Figure 1. I

To provide for bringing unused portions of bristles 33 of the brush 28 to position to be engaged by a type-head 34, when its type bar 14 is swung upwardly, a thumb-screw 35 may extend from one side through the bracket 23, as shown in Figure 3, to have its threaded end engage in a threaded hole 36 in the side element 24 on the opposite side of the bracket. After loosening the screw 35 in the usual way, a new portion of the bristles can be slid along the ends 26 to type-engaging position, and the screw 35 tightened up again to bind the brush by the clamps 25. It will be noted that the bracket side elements 24 are pressed against the sides of the type-guide upon making the screw 35 tight in the bracket 23, thereby helping to hold the latter securely on the typeguide.

It will be noted that by having the clamps 25 inclined forwardly at the top, as shown in Figure 1, the portion of the bristles which engages the type-head 34 at any time is always positioned so that particles of grit, etc., dislodged from the type-head will fall by gravity clear of any portion of the bristles below the point of contact with the type-head, and also clear of the fulcrum-rod of the typebar 14.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim: a

I 1. In a typecleaning attachment for a typewriting machine having a type-guide, a brackethavin-g side elements engaging against the sides of said type-guide, extensions on said side elements formed into clamps, a typecleaning brush having grooves to receive said clamps for mounting the brush on the bracket, and means including a spring-pressed detent engaging behind said type-guide for fastening said bracket on'said type-guide.

2. In a type cleaning attachment foal a type-writing machine, a bracket having sides with extensions formed into U-shaped clamps,

a type-cleaning brush having longitudinallyextending grooves in which the clamps engage, said grooved brush being slidable along said clamps for adjustably mounting said brush on said bracket, releasable means for pressing said clamps against said brush, and means for mounting said bracket on said machine.

3. In a type-cleaning attachment for a typewriting machine, a bracket having side extensions formed into U-shaped clamps, a type-cleaning brush having longitudinallyextending grooves in which the clamps engage, said grooved brush being slidable along said clamps for adjustably mounting the brush on the bracket, and a thumb-screw passing through apertures in the sides for releasing and tightening the clamps to hold the brush in different operative positions.

4. In a front-strike typewriting machine,

the combination with key-operated types and a type-guide having forwardly-extending wings, of a type-cleaning attachment including a bracket supported on said guide, a brush fastened in said bracket and positioned for having said types strike thereagainst, a rearwardly-opening pocket on said bracket engaging about said Wings and efiective for preventing backward movement of said attachment by the blows of said types, and a springprcssed latch engaging behind said typeguide for detachably securing said bracket on said typeguide.
