DUST-MOP CLEANER. I

has collected considerable dust, usually the mop is shaken out of the window of the house or apartment, which is an objectionable feature of the method. Furthermore, it is neces sary to pass back and forth from the place wherethe mop is used to the place where it is to be cleaned, a number of times. The present invention comprises a receptacle having a suitable cover, and contained vwithin the receptacle is. a foraminous cage, preferably formed of a plurality of wires, within which the head ofthe mop is adapted to be moved to beat the dust therefrom and to cleposit it in the receptacle; The present device is adaptedto be used within the house or apartment and it may be readily emptied after an accumulation of dirt after the same has been used a number of times. One obj ect of the present invention is to provide a very simple device for the above purpose, which may be readily attached to or detached from a pail or bucket, so that the latter'may be used as a water pail or for any other purpose I 5 when not being used as a dust mop cleaner.

Another object is to eliminate special construction of the pail itself. Another object is to make the cover readily detachable from the pail, so that the collected dust may be 4 readily discharged from the pail. Another object is to reduce the cost of construction and otherwise simplify the device.

The receptacle 1 may be an ordinarypail or near its top with a bead or, indentation 2 which may be used as a support on which the top or plate 3 may rest. In addition, the wall of the pail is provided with small apertures 4 adjacent this bead which apertures are adapted to receive the locking members on the top plate, as will be set forth.

The plate 3 will, of course, be circular if it is to be applied to a circular pail, and its diameter will conform closely to the diameter at the top 'ofthe pail, so that this plate may be inserted from the top and be allowed to rest on the bead 2 to form a top closure for the pail. The stationary cover is provided with a preferably circular opening 9 which is adapted .to be closed by means of a hinged cover, preferably made in two sections. For

this purpose'we have shown a'section 10 at tached to the stationary plate 3 by means of hinges 11 adjacent the edgeof the opening 9 and this cover member is shown of suflicient size to cover one-half'of said opening.

There is a similar cover member 12 connected by hinges 13 with the stationary plate 3 adjacent, the edge of the opening 9, and this cover member is adapted to close the other half of said opening. The cover sections at their opposing or adjacent edges areprovided with semi-circular recesses 14 which,

when the cover members are closed, provide the central apertures through which the mop IOU handle is adapted to project. We have shown handles 15 on the cover sections by means of which the covers may be grasped for opening and closing them.

There is a foraminous cage within which the head of the mop is adapted to be revolved for beating the dust from it, and this we have shownas composed of .a series of wires-16 united to form a basket suspended from the the stationary plate 3. While this basket may be formed in'various ways, we have extending at right angles to other wires 19 and arranged at the lower ends of the wires 16 to form the bottom of the cage.

To assemble the device the plate 3 which carries the basket is simply inserted into the top of the pail and allowed to move clownwardly until it rests on the bead 2, the latches 5 being retracted or drawn within the pcripheral line of the plate 3 in order to'allow the latter to be inserted. The latches 5 are then moved outwardly to pass their projecting ends 7 through the apertures 4 in the pail, and this locks the plate in position within the pail. When it is desired to clean the mop the cover members 10, 12 are swung upwardly and the mop head 20 is inserted through the opening 9 and into the basket in the position shown in Figure 1; and then the cover members 10, 12 are closed, that the handle 21 of the mop projects through the central opening 14. The mop may then be rapidly revolved between the hands and this will cause the head of the mop to beat against the wires of the basket so as to dislodge the d'ust therefrom and allow it to fall through the basket and collect in the bottom of the pail. While this is taking place, the head of the mop is enclosed and this will prevent the spreading of the dust in the air. After the mop has been cleaned, the covers 10, 12 are opened and the head of the mop is withdrawn, whereupon the covers may be again closed until the device is to be used again. When it is desirable to remove the collected dust from the pail, it is only necessary to move the latches 5 inwardly to unlock the cover plate 3 and the latter, together with the basket, may be lifted from the pail, and the latter may be emptied. If desired, the pail with the plate and basket removed, may be used as an ordinary water pail for various purposes, until such time as it is desiredto use the combination for the purpose above described. This device is both simple and convenient and utilizes a pail of ordinary construction. The hinged covers of the form herein shown, may be very inexpensively blanked from sheet material and the cost of manufacture of the device as a whole is reduced to the minimum.

Having described our invention, what we claim is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle having an open upper end and formed with an inwardly extending bead acent its upper end to form a seat, a plate insertabie in the upper end of said receptacle and adapted to rest on said head, a i'oramino us basket depending from said plate and extending within said receptacle for the purpose set forth, said plate having an opening over said basket, and movable cover members for closing said opening in said plate.

2. A device oi the class described, a receptacle having an upper end and formed with an inwardly extending bead to provide a seat, said receptacle having apertures, a plate insertable in said receptacle to rest on said head, latch members on said plate adapted to engage in said apertures and in said receptacle to dctachably secure the plate to the receptacle, a foraminous basket depending from said plate and extending within said receptacle for the purpose set forth, said plate having an opening over said basket, and movable cover members for closing said opening in said plate.

3. In a device of the character described the combination oi a receptacle having an open end, an inwardly extending bead in said receptacle near said open end to form a. seat, a flat plate insertable in said open end to rest on said seat, said receptacle having aper tures and said plate having latch members insertable in said apertures to secure said plate to said receptacle, said plate having an aperture, a ioraminous basket extending from said plate in register with said aperture, and a flat cover composed of a plurality of polygonal sections hinged to said plate and arranged to close the aperture in said plate.
