RIDGE-CAE-FORMING MACHINE.
Application filed June 26,1928. Serial No. 118,723.
The object of this invention is to form a ridge cap for use with sheet metal roofing. A further object is to provide a machine adapted to roll a metallic plate into such form that it will best-serve the purposes intended. the machine including a plurality of pairs of "olls, the upper rolls being approximately convex but having stepped surfaces formed thereon, and the lower rolls being grooved and the walls of the grooves conforming to the surface or surfaces of the cooperating rolls. With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications m ay be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7 In the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure 1 shows the machine in side elevation. 1
A plurality of channel bars are designated 10 and 11, and carried by these bars are vertically extending members, such as 12 and 13, these elements beingarranged in pairs on opposite sides of the machine and mounted directly on channel bars 10 and 11, forming a base.
The bearing boxes 14 are vertically slid: able between adjacent elements 12 and 13, and provide bearings for shafts 15 and 16, the boxes 14 being vertically adjustable by means of threaded devices 17 Mounted on shafts 15 and 16 are rolls 19 and 20, each provided with a convex central portion, and with stepped side portions 21 and 22, bevelled as shown in Figure 3. Lower rolls, such as 25, illustrated in Figure 3, are' each provided with a circumferential groove having a concave central portion 26, and
having walls stepped as shown at 27 and 28, these surfaces cooperating with the surfaces 21 and 22 of the upper rolls.
Driving and loose pulleys are designated 33 and 34 and are carried by shaft 35 mounting a gear wheel or pinion 36, the latter meshing with gear wheel 37 on lower shaft 38.
The shaft last named carries a gear wheel 39' A flat plate, to be formed by this machine, 7 r
is passed between the upper and lower rolls and is pressed to the form shown in Figure 4, between shaping plates 47 and 47 It will be observed that the rolled plate or ridge'cap is approximately V-shaped in transverse section, and in the inverted position of Figure 4, it includes a middle portion 57, convex on the outer side, and the flanges having portions 58, 59, 60. The side portions of the rolls may be considered as being provided with annular shoulders of the diameter shown, these portions being in steppedrelation.
Having thus described the invention, what" is claimed is:
, 1. In a ridge cap forming machine, a roll having a central circumferential convex-portion and tapered. portions of reduced 'dlameter on each side of the convex portion, and a 00 operating roll having its central circumferential portion grooved to form walls complementary to the convex surface of the other roll, the cooperating roll havingoutwardly flared walls extending from the circumferential groove, said flared walls each including portions inclined in approximatelythe same degreeand annular portions intermediate of the lnclined portions and extending-1n vplanes perpendicular to the axis of the rolls.
2. Ina rldge cap forming machine, a roll having a central circumferential convex pornon and tapered portlons of reduced diameter on each side of the convex portion, and
a cooperatingroll having its central circumferential portion grooved to form walls'complementary to the convex surface of the other roll, the cooperating roll having outwardly flared walls extending from thecircumferential groove, said fiared'walls each including portions inclined in approximately the same degree and annular portions intermediate of the inclined portions'and extending 'n planes perpendicular to the axis of the rolls, additional rolls similarly formed, shafts mounting the rolls in pairs, and channeled plates mounted between the pairs, the channels of the plates extending longitudinally of the path of travel of material passed between the pairs of rolls.
3. In a ridge cap having a central circumferential convex portion and tapered portions of reduced diameter on each side of the convex portion, and a cooperating roll having its central circumferential portion grooved to form Walls oomplein'entary to the convex surface ofthe other roll the coo eratin roll havinp outwardl fiaredwalls extendin from the circumferenforming machine, a roll tial groove said flared Walls each including portions inclined in approximately the sanie degree and annular portions intermediate of the inclined portionsandextending in planes perpendicular'to the'axis of the rolls, additional rolls similarly formed, shafts mounting the rolls in pairs, and channeled plates arranged in pairs and mounted between the rolls, the channels of the plates including Walls conforming to the aforesaid flared Walls.
In testimony whereof We afiiX our signatures. r
