To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BERAN, director, citizen of the Republic of Austria, residing at Hirschwang, Republic of Austria,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Mills for Manufacturing Corrugated 'Pasteboard, Sheet Metal, and the like, for which I have filed applications in Austria, A2139-21, filed April 1, 1921; Germany, B52897, filed April 27,

For rolling corrugations and other projections in pasteboard, sheet metal, and the like heretofore two types of rolling mills had been used, on the one hand rolling mills with solid rolling surfaces havingcut into the same the grooves, and on the other hand rolling mills with rolls built up of disks or laminae cut to the required shape. Rolling mills having solid rolling surfaces require new rollsfor each new shape of corrugations, the making of which is exceedingly expensive, more particularly for material having wavy corrugations. With rolling mills, built up of dis-ks or laminae, corrugations of various shapes may indeed be produced by one set of such disks or laminae.
The manufacture of the disks for such rolling mill rolls requires, however, in some cases punching machines with special precision dividing mechanism because for the manufacture of rolls with wavy or curved corrugating grooves it is sometimes necessary that the indentations of adj acent'disks are displaced the one relatively to the other by fractions of a millimeter.
The present invention has for its object to avoid the above inconveniences by providing a novel rolling mill built up of disks or laminae. According to the invention this object is attained by providing the rolls built up in a manner known of disks or laminae with keys or feathers for the disks, such keys being curved in a particular manner and to a shape such that on assembling are obtained.
In the drawings an embodiment of the improved rolling mill for the manufacture of pasteboard with wavy corrugations is shown by way of example.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of the rolling mill; Fig. 2 is a section on the line II- II Fig. 1; Fig. 3 illustrates the corrugation produced by the rolling mill; F igs. 1, 5,6, and 7 show details of the rolling inill on a larger scale.
The rolling mill consists of two rolls 1, 2, and the supporting shafts 3, {1 are geared witheac-h other by wheels 5, 6. The supporting shafts 3, 4 aremade hollow. for passing therethrough heating agents, and they are connected to the supply and escape tubes for the heating agent by stuffing boxes 7 Each roll 1, 2 consists as is known of a set of disks or laminae 10 arranged side by side and mounted on the supporting shafts 3, 4 and heldtogether by clamping devices 11 acting on the first and the last disk. The clamping devices consist as shown in Fig. 1 of pressing rings screwed upon the supportingshafts 3, 4.
Each roll 1, 2 has a curved key a: by which, on assembling the roll, the individual disks 10 are displaced circumferentially the one relatively to the other, and firmly connected with each otherin the displaced position.

In the embodiment shown by way of example the key w is mounted on the supporting shafts 3, 4 of the rolls. It consists as is shown by Figs. 1, 6 and 7 of a bar w, curved in wave shape and mounted fast in a groove 15 of the supporting shaft 3 and 4 respectively. The key w is rectangular in transverse section as shown in Fig. 7. It is provided with guiding surfaces 16, 16 of a curved wave shape, the curvatures of which are made to correspond to the axial wavy shape of the corrugations of the rolls. The groove 15 is parallel to the axis of the supporting shaft. Its width between its side walls is exactly equal.-
For this purpose the key 00 is provided with curvatures which on placing to the maximum distance between the guiding surfaces 16 of the key at, the depth of the groove, however, is less than the thickness of the bar, so that it projects beyond the periphery of the supporting shafts.
The disks 10 (Figs. 1, consist of thin sheet metal with teeth 20 provided on the periphery. Each disk is provided with a central opening 21 of a diameter coincident with that of the supporting shaft. Further each disk is provided with a recess 22 into which engages the key 00. The recesses 22 of all the disks of a roll of the rolling mill occupy the same position relatively to the teeth 20, so that the axial shape of the corrugations of the rolls is determined by the curved shape of the key 00. In the present embodiment shown by way of example the recesses 22 of the disks are provided at the periphery of the opening 21. Their width is equal to the width of the curved part or rib of the key so, so that the sides of the recesses 22 snugly fit the guiding sur faces 16, 16 when the disks are pushed or threaded on the same.
On assembling the rolls 1, 2 the disks 10 pushed onto the supporting shafts 3, 4 are positively displaced circumferentially the one relatively to the other by the cooperation of the recesses 22 and the curved key as so that rolls having curved axial corrugations are obtained, the key :0 securing besides such displacement of the disks 10 and the teeth also a positive connection of the disks with each other and with the supporting shafts 3, 4.
By the means above described rolling mills for the manufacture of various shapes of corrugations may be made. F or chang ing the shape, of the corrugations it is only necessary to substitute for the key 00 shown in Fig. 6 a key having a different curved shape, the same set of disks being used again.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A roll for manufacturing corrugated goods having corrugations curved longitudinally comprising a supporting shaft, a plurality of disks mounted on such shaft and having projections on their outer circumferences, the said disks being exactly alike each other, a key having a curved portion engaging with the said disks and a portion adapted to be passed into and to engage with a groove in the said supporting shaft, and means for removably holding a in position the disks and the key on the supporting shaft.
2. A roll for manufacturing corrugated goods having corrugations curved longitudinally comprising a supporting shaft, a plurality of disks mounted on such shaft and having projections on their outer cir cumferences, and an opening in the center and a recess for receiving a. key on the circumference of the said opening, the said disks being exactly alike each other and their key receiving recesses being in the same relative position to their projections throughout, a key interposed between the supporting shaft and the disks, such key having a curved portion adapted to engage the key receiving recesses of the disks and another portion adapted to slide longitudinally in a groove in the supporting shaft and pressing rings for removably holding in position the disks and the key on the supporting shaft.
3. ii. roll for manufacturing corrugated goods having corrugations curved longitudinally comprising a supporting shaft a plurality of disks mounted on such shaft and having projections on their outer circumferences and an opening in the center and a recess for receiving a key on the circumference of the said opening, the said' disks being exactly alike each other and their key-receiving recesses being in the same relative position relatively totheir projections throughout, a key interposed between the supporting shaft and the disks, such key having a curved portion adapted to engage the key-receiving recesses of-the disks and another portion adapted to slide longitudinally in a groove in the supporting shaft, the width of the latter portion being equal to the maximum width of the curved portion of the key, and pressing ringsfor removably holding in position the disks and the key.
