The invention relates to acombined shipping and display box especially adapted for the shipment and subsequent display of confectionery in bulk.

The object of the invention is to provide a box of common type with a means or contrivance adding but little to the cost of the box and which may be contained within the interior thereof during shipment and afterward by a simple manipulation convert the box into a display box by which a port-ion of its contents may be displayed and the remainder contained within the body of the box be dispensed therefrom as occasion arises.

The invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box when converted into a display box.

Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the subjectanatter shown in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing The body of the box is of the customary rectangular structure comprising sides 2, 2, ends 3, 3 and bottom 4.. The sides 2, 2 and one end 3' of the body are connected together and to the bottom of the box in the usual manner. The other end or the end 3 is preferably made a hinged end, being hinged to the bottom 4 in order that it may open outwardly permitting direct access into the interior of the body of the box from one end thereof. 5 represents the cover of the box consisting of a top 6 and depending therefrom sides 7 7 and ends 8, 8 which fit over the sides and ends to the body of the box closing it in the usual manner. I prefer that the cover shall fit entirely over the body of the box in other words, that the sides and ends to the cover shall substantially equal in depth the sides and ends of the body of the box so as to entirely cover the same when the cover is in place. This is especially desirable when one end or the end 3 of the body of the box is made a hinged end in. order to give strength to the entire box. If the end 3, however, is a fixed end a deep cover is no longer necessary or desirable.

Located within the body of the box and occupying a position in the top thereof is a shallow tray 10. This tray presents a surface area substantially equal to the surface area of the cavity of the body of the box, the tray fitting Serial No. 721,127.

This is the normal arrangement of the bridge member and tray suppor ed by it after the packing of the box and during its shipment. The cavity 14 of the box body beneath the top plate 12 of the bridge member is filled with the goods in bull: and the tray 6 also contains a separate display layer of the goods. The cavity 14 may be filled with goods rom the top before the bridge member is insorted in case both ends of the box body are fixed, or with the box body provided with a hinged end 3 as shown, the bridge member may first be inserted and the cavity it filled from the open end of the box body.

In dispensing the goods, the tray 6 with a display layer of the goods thereon may be left intact in the topand the goods dispensed from the cavity 14: of the box body through its end left open in turning down the end flap 3.

The adaptability of the bridge member, however, permits of its being turned up to occupy an inclined posit-ion with relation to the box body as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When occupying this position the side plates 13, 13' of the bridge member will rest at their forward ends on the bottom of the box body and thence extend backward and upward by the opposite sides of the body and engage the top edges of these sides at the point of cuts or incisions 15 in the plates, the sides of the box body then assisting in the retention of the bridge member in its inclined position.

With the bridge member thus supported, the display resting thereon will be maintained in a position best suited for purposes ber having a top plate occupying an elevated position within the box body spanning the cavity thereof and provided with dependent oppositely-arranged side plates extending down inside the opposite sides of the box body and resting upon the bottom of said body for supporting the top plate of the bridge member in its elevated position as aforesaid, said bridge member being movable With relation to the box body to occupy a changed position therein with the top plate thereof occupying an inclined position relatively to the box body and the side plates thereof then resting on the bottom of the box body only at their forward ends and inclining upwardly by said sides of the box body, and means whereby the bridge member may be supported in its changed position as aforesai 2. In a box of the character specified, the combination with the body of the box and cover,ofa display tray and a contained bridge member substantially inverted U-shaped in form supporting said tray, said bridge member having atop plate occupying an elevated position within the box body spanning the cavity thereof and provided with dependent oppositely-arranged side plates extending down inside the opposite sides of the box body and resting upon the bottom of said body for supporting the top plate of the bridge member in its elevated position as aforesaid, said bridge member being movable with relation to the box body to occupy a changed position therein with the top plate thereof occupying an inclined position relatively to the box body and the side plates thereof then resting on the bottom of the box body only at their forward ends and inclining upwardly by said sides of the box body, and means whereby the bridge member may besdupported in its changed position as aforesai enonen e.
