UNITED STATES DON D. MYERS,
PUMP BASE.
Application led July 26,
This invention relates to reciproca-ting pumps. I
This invention has utility when incorporated in c ylinder base and features of air type of reciprocating pumps as used for inflating pneumatic tires of vehicles.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a. side elevation of an embodiment of the invention in a hand operated tire pump;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIJ-II, Fig. 1, looking in the direction ofthe arrow; I
Fig. 3 is a sect-ion on the line III-III, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow; and
Fig. a is a section on the .line IV-IV, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Pump cylinder 1 is shown as having piston 2 therein from which upwardly extends piston rod 3 through cylinder head Ll to Operating han-dle 5.
A base is herein provided comprising a pair of tread portions 6 having therebetween This boss 7 is ofl'set or slightly eccentric to the line between the pair of treads 6. Centrally between the pair of treads 6, but eccentrically disposed as to the boss 7, is upwardly extending flange 8. This base member is of sheet metal and is shown as of greater length than width.
The flange 8 provides on its inner side a first scat. for embracing the cylinder 1. This cylinder 1 as extending through opening provided by the flange 8, terminates toward the boss 7 with a Hare portion 9 thus snugly holding the cylinder 1 in osition as to seat 10 on the inner side of the ange 8. The boss 7 on its inner side, provides a seat 11 into which is thrust cup-shaped cylinder head having cup bottom` 12 and flange of cup side portion 13 as a ring flange seating in the seat 11. This cylinder head cup 12, 13, as disposed. in the seat 11 of the boss 7, has the cup 1926. Serial No. 124,924.
bottom or diaphragm 12 about the flare portion of the cylinder 1 stifening the action of the seat 10, as well as supplementing the sealing relation of this head as to the bottom of the cylinder 1. This cylinder head dia-v phragm 12 is shown as having way or channel 14 therefrom extending radially under a.
portion of the flare 9 to the eccentric portion ofthe boss 7 as laterally of the flange 8 where this channel 14 is in communication with upwardly extending port 15 herein shown as carrying fitting 16. with which coupling 17 may coact in connecting flexible duct 18 as extending to tire valve fitting 19. This assembly of the two-part cup cylinder head and the tread portion, may be snug ress fit assembly as a light weight rigid) structure.
The tread portion 6 may be reinforced by corrugations 20 with the depending flange 21 therefrom. This flange 21 may have struckup portions 22 to enga e the lower side of the flange 13 of the cylin er head as additional holding means in anchoring the parts in the set-up or assembled relation of this stamped or pressed base structure.
What is claimed and it4 is desired to Secure by United States Letters Patent is A pump base including an extended tread portion, a hollow boss rising from said base, a cup-shaped cylinder head mounted in said boss and possessing a 'depression' in the upper surface thereof, an outlet passage located at the outer end of said boss and in communication with the cylinder hea-d depression, a
ump cylinder eccentrically mounted in said oss, the lower portion of said cylinder having a flared en'd so as to be positioned in said boss, said cylinder head and boss serving as locking means to retain said um t cylinder, and retaining means integra 'wit the base to osition the cylinder head within said boss. n Witness whereof I affix my signature.
