My invention relates to improvements in Vair pumps and more -particularly to those designed for inlating pneumatic q tires. The object of the inventionLisfaprovide a pump of comparatively simple .and inexpensive construction, yet one which will be highly efficient and easy to operate, provision being made whereby an extremely large area is allowed for the air to pass into the cylinder in front of the piston as the latter is moved on its receding stroke.

the numeral 1 designates a pump cylinder whose lower Vend is shown mounted in a threaded socket 2 having a foot piece 3, an outlet nipple lbeing provided from a chamber 5 in the bottom oi' the socket 2, and theusual exible tube 6 leads from the nipple 4 for attachment to the tire valve. The upper end of cylinder l is provided with a cap 7 suitably secured in' place and provided with a central opening S and with a number or' apertures 9, the latter being for the purpose of permit-ting the intake and discharge of air into the cylinder as the pump piston is reciprocated, thereby preventing the compression of air above the piston or thel creation of a partial vacuum,

By the provision of the. valve structure above described, when the piston is raised,
both valves 23 and 29 will open, thus providing an unusually large area through which the air may flow into the lower end of the cylinder. This causes extremely easy operation of thepump since the ascent of the piston encounters no resistance other than the friction of the piston upon the cylinder, which is infinitesimal. Also7 should one of the valves bind for anvreason and fail to openythe other will operate,A
thus preventing trouble and inconvenience which would otherwise be caused even though the binding were momentary'.

A pump piston comprising a one piece hollow cylindrical piston head having an outwardly facing Cone valve seat at yone end and an outwardly projecting tubular nook integral with its other end for the attachment or" a tubular pistonY rod a spider ex tending across said hollow piston head and having a central guide onening, a tubular valve stem sliding through said guide opening and havingl its inner end positioned loosely in said tubular neck and provided with a stop pin, the outer end of said tubular valve stem having an external cone valve and an internal cone valve seat, said valvecoacting With the seat ot' said piston head, a coiled spring surrounding said tuba lar valve lstern-between said spider and said stop for normally seating said cone valve, a second spider extending across said tubu lar valve stein and'having a central guide opening, a relatively small valve stem sliding through said guide opening of the second spider, a cone valve on the outer end of said relatively small stein for coaotion With the valve 'seat of said tubular stem, a stop on the inner end of said relatively small stem and a coil spring surrounding this stem between its stop and Uuiding spider.
