Description

H. C. LYONS MEASURI'NG'FAUCET Filed Dec. 23, 1924 Patented Dec. .l, 1928.
)UNITED STATES MEASURING risuona?.
Application led December 23, 1924. Serial No. 757,609.`
I/Vhile my improvements in the construction and operation of parts are applicable to measuring faucets generally, and for various other purposes, they are designed primarily for em'l'iodiment in faucetsto be used in the measuring'and serving of cream, syrup, etc.,
of a viscous, semi-fluid character, especially cream of milk, which latter is'partieularly susceptible to discoloration bymetallic attrition of parts with which it may be brought into Contact, as where kthe valves of the faucet engage rotatively with their seats in the outlet and: inlet ports, as heretofore; Another object of my present invention, which is the result of 'years of experimental investigation in connection with measuring anddispensing faucets for use in conjunction with my sanitary milk dispensing means well known in the trade, is to facilitate the cleansing of all parts of the faucet, and to .simplify and cheapen the construction as well as the manipulation thereof, all'as hereinafter fully set `forth,--the invention consisting essentially' in the specific construction and arrangement of parts described'and claimed herein, and a distinctive feature being the method and means employed for operating both the inlet and outlet valves.
In the accompanying drawings I illustratey a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention in a faucet of the character designated, although I do not limit my-h self to the identical formand construction of parts shown by wayof enemplilication, since modilications may be made in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients resorted to, with like results and without departing from the spirit and intentof my invention in this, respect. o
`With this understanding z- Fig. l, represents a central longitudinal sectional view of a preferred form of my measuring faucet, showing the inlet valve open and the outlet valve closed;
Fig. 2, is a view like unto Fig. l, showing the inlet valve closed and the outlet valve open;
Fig. 8, is a front end elevation, with the .ap removed; Y Y
Fig. 4, isa transverse section taken upon plane of lines 4-4 Fig. 2.
In thepreferred construction of my measuring faucet the head a, of thestem a', of the inlet valve A, is formed with a duplex male screw thread a2, of relativelyk steep pitch engaging with acorrespondingly formed female screw thread Z), (Fig. 2) in the body b, of theoutlet valve B,`said.valve body b', be`- ingv formed. with a stem b2, having a-rectangular end b3, for engagement with turning means, such as a handle b, as indicated -by dotted-lines in Fig. 2, or equivalent mechanical expedient for 'imparting afpar'tialturn to' the valve B, considered in a Aunitary sense.` The body 1b', of the valve B, lits snugly in .a cylindrical portion' c, of the casing C, the
con'oidalfoutlet valveV seat c', being inter-k f mediate between said cylindrical portion of the casing C, and thev measuring chamber c2, thereof, said measuring chamber .termi- Hating. in the inlet valve seat off. c4, isa vent in theA casing C, :for admitting air to 'replace charge valve B, is open.
The outer endlof the casingC, is closed by a screw'cap I), between which and cross studs b5, '65,' .on the valve stem nais interposed a spiraly springl e, which tends constantly to the outlet throuoh the spout o5, when. the'dispressthe outletvalve B, to its seat'c, asjshown in Fig. vl of the drawings, which-'view repre; sents the normal co-relative positions of the parts, with the inlet valve A retracted from itsseatcg. a r
This Aopening of the inlet valve A, to the position shown in Fig.: 1, is effected only when i the outletfvalve B is seated, by an approximately half turn of the valve head b,
through the medium of the handle b4, thereby causing the female screw thread b, acting on the male screw thread a2, ofthe valve stem a, to retract the valve A, from its, seat c3, into the position shown in Fig'. l. The valve stema, screw thread a2 and valve A are held against rotative movement by means of radial arms ex, ax', on the stein a', (Fig. 4L) the outer extremities of which engage with longitudinal grooves 0X, c", formed for the purpose in the side walls of the measuring chamber c2.
The head of the valve B, being held seated normally by the spring e, it is obvious that the inlet valve A, may be seated or re.- tracted by a partial rotation of said headb', the pitch of the screws a2, and I), beingA sufficient for the purpose. I-Ience, when the inlet valve A is seated, a further turning movement imparted to the head ZJ', in the same di; rection which seated the inlet valve A, will force said head n', and valve B, outward against the resistance of the spring e, into the position shown-in Fig. 2, the seated inlet valve A, acting as the fulcrum or abuti'nent to thus effect the Opening of the outlet valve B, for
