WILLIAM IPLATTS KELLE'I'T, F BRANTFORD, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FREIGHT-TRAN SPORTING EQUIPMENT.
Original application filed August 12, 1926, Serial No. 128,846. Divided and'this application filed September 21, 1927.
The principal objects of the invention are, to facilitate the handling of package freight so that it may be transported with the least possible damage and with the utmost dis-.
about from place to place without requiring other forms of transport.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one. end of a freight car showin a transportation truck mounted thereon ant a pair of individual goods containers arranged upon the truck.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the car.
Figure 3 is an underside plan view of one of the goods containers showing the arrangement of wheeled supports. I
Figure 4 is a perspective detail of the corner bracket locking members for the goods containers.
The device herein illustrated is supplementary to my co-pencling application 128,846
filed August 12th, 1926, and is filed as a di- 5 vision of said application. the principal feature of the present invention having been illustrated and described in the aforesaid application.
The structure involved is used in conjunction With a freight car which is provided withlongitudinal trackways 1 which are of a suit-- able design and are adapted to receive and guide the roller supports 2 and 3 of the trucks 4. These trucks are held from lateral dis placement by means of flanged plates 5 which slidably engage the flanged-brackets 6 rigidly secured to the car deck at the outer sides of the trackways 1.
Trackways 7 are rigidly mounted on the trucks 4 and extend transversely thereof hav ing their outer ends 8 flared to allow the ready Serial No. 221,084. 1
contact and registration of the rollers 9 carried on the underside of the containers 10.
The roller supports of the containers are preferably in the form of pivot members 11 arranged at each end and coupled together by connecting rods '12, whilethe central roller supports 13 are-,of c-astor type.
Each of the connecting rods 12 connecting the paired roller supports are connected centrally to a swivel member 11 to which an operating handle may be secured and a bracket 15 is provided to which said swivel member may be rigidly connected at the back end of the'container, so that the rollers will be held from swinging to a position which would impair the proper operation of the device as a mobile container.
Each of the containers 10 is provided with a pair of angle brackets 16 arranged. on the sides adjacent to the ends, which brackets extend laterally outward to engage the int-urned flanged jaws of the holding plates 17 which are rigidly secured to the truck at the ends and between the containers.
The brackets are rigidly secured to the holding plates 17 by locking pins 18 which extend through holes in the plates and brackets.
The trucks 4 are each provided with lifting eyes 19 arranged at both ends into which the hooks of the hoisting tackle may be inserted to lift the truck and its containers bodily from the car. lVhen this is to be done the truck is simply moved longitudinally until the flanged plates of the brackets 5 and 6 are cleared from each other, when the whole structure may be swung clear and the truck may then be wheeled to any desirable position. The containers may in like manner be lifted clear from the .truck, said containers being provided with lifting brackets 20 on either side.
It will be seen that with a structure such as described the trucks may beremoved from the cars by being moved longitudinally in their trackways, spanning the space from car to car and travelling the full length of a train if necessary, or as has been described, the trucks may be lifted bodily from the cars by a suitable hoisting apparatus.
; When the trucks have been lifted they may be rolled around the receiving warehouse to a desirable position for the unloading of the separate containers and these containers may be rolled 01f side-ways from the truck on to a receiving platform, from whence they may be rolled individually to any desirable place, or on to a receiving vehicle for further transportation, or they may be bodily lifted from the truck.
Such arrangement of device provides a very flexible means for the handling of package freight and will enable the railway operators handling package goods economically for door to door delivery.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A freight transporting equipment, comprising a railway car having longitudinal trackways, trucks mounted upon said railway cars having roller supports engaging said trackways, transverse trackways arranged upon said trucks, goods containers having roller supports mounted on the transverse trackways on said trucks, means for locking the containers on said trucks, and means for locking said trucks on said cars.
2. A freight transporting equipment, comprising a railway car having longitudinal trackways, Wheeled trucks mounted on said trackways to move longitudinally of the car, said trucks having transverse trackways, goods containers having wheeled supports resting on said transverse trackways, flanged members extending laterally from said containers, flanged members rigidly secured on said trucks parallel with the trackways thereon and adapted to engage the flanged members on the containers, and means for locking said flanged members together.
3. A freight transporting equipment, comprising a railway car having longitudinal trackways, trucks mounted on said trackways for longitudinal movement and having transverse trackways thereon arranged in pairs, guides arranged parallel with and at the outer sides of said pairs of trackways on said trucks, containers having pivotal roller supports mounted thereunder adapted to engage said guides, cross bars connecting the end pairs of said pivotal rollers, means for locking said cross bars, and means carried by said containers for engaging the side guides in interlocking contact.
4. A. freight transporting equipment, comprising a railway car having longitudinal trackways and longitudinal locking guides, trucks mounted on roller supports engaging said trackways and having hoisting connections, transverse trackways mounted on said trucks in pairs, guideways mounted parallel with said transverse trackways, containers mounted. on roller supports which engage said trackways, locking members on said containcrs engaging said guideways, and means a for lifting said containers.
