PENCIL.
Application inea March 22,1928. serial No. 263,83?.
This invention relates to pencils and has fora. particular object thereof the provision of a pencil which may be readily sharpened Without the assistance of a knife or other cutting implement.
A further and more specific object ot the invention is to provide a pencil, the lead of which is provided With a. casing formed oi parafiine or some other suitable 'Wax-like substance, Which will not solten from the heat ot the hand and which, at the same time, may be readily removed from the lead bythe appli cation of heat thereto or scraped from the lead by the use of a thumb nail or a blunt instrument. 1
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying draiving, wherein for the purpose of illust.v is shown a preferred embodiment ot' my invent-ion and Whe-rein Y j Figure l is a side elevation of a pencil constructed in accordance with myinvention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sec tional view therethrough;
Figure 3 is a. transverse sectional view therethrough.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral l0 generally designates a. lead olf the type 4ordinarily employed in pencils which, in accordance with my invention, is surrounded by a cast casing ll consisting of either a pure paraliine or parafiine mixed With Wax and other substances to produce a composition which Will not melt at body temperatures and which, at the same time, may be readily melted by the heat or a match applied thereto. Aboutthis casing, I provide a paper cover l2, the edges ot which are joined to one another. This entire tube is joined to the casing ll. in the process oi casting the same and serves to reinforce the casing and render the same rigid und-erslightly higher temperatures to Which it might be subjected While 1n storage. This pencil may have applied to one end thereot an eraser 1,3, which is connected to the aencil in the ordinary manner.
A pencil of this character may be sharpcned by the use of a blunt instrument or ma y be sharpened by simply light-ing a match and applying the flame to the end ot the pencil to melt away the casing and burn away the cover.
Since the construction hereinbeiore set torth is capable ot a certain range ot change and modilication Without materia ly departing from the spirit ofthe invention, l do not limit myseli2 to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim l. A pencil comprising` a lead and a surrounding casing of a substance maintaining its rigidity under body temperatures but melting readily upon the application ot' thune thereto.
2. A pencil comprising a lead and a surrounding casing ot a substance maintaining its rigidity under body temperatures but melting readily upon the application oi flame thereto, and a cover tor said casing which is readily sectionally removable and reinforces said casing to stitlen the same and render the same rigid under temperatm'es Which would otherwise permit the casing to flex and deform. v
3. A pencil comprising a lead and a snrrounding` casing of a substance maintaining its` rigidityl under body temperatures but melting readily upon the application ot llame thereto, and a reinforcing` cover for said casing of readily combustible material.
t. A pencil comprising a lead ane a surrounding casing of a substance. maintaining its rigidity under body temperatures but melting readily upon the application of flame thereto, and a paper cover tor said casing.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
