LABEL FOR WOUND OR ROLLED FABRICS.

This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in labels, and more particularly to labelsfor cloth or other fabric wound or supported upon a holder.

lVhen cloths and other fabrics are finally prepared for shipment or are to be placed on the market, they are frequently wound upon a holder commonly termed a board. The board or holder may be of any character or form adapted to support the cloth or fabric, but usually comprises a fiat, board-like structure that may be formed of thick stifi' paper or cardboard.

It is desirable to provide these bolts or rolls of cloth with tags or labels for indicating the number of yards of material in the roll and such other information as may be needed. Various forms of tags and labels have therefore been provided heretofore for this purpose, but such proposed tags and labels,

are open to the objection that when they are secured either to the board upon which the fabric is wound or to the fabric itself, they are concealed by the paper wrapper which is commonly placed about the roll or cloth to protect the same, and it has therefore been necessary to provide a second tag or label upon the outside of the paper wrapper and which bears the same information as the tag or label within the package.

Heretofore it has been the practice in many mills to place a small tag or sticker upon the roll of cloth as soon as the same is wound, to indicate the. number of yards of cloth in the roll. Later, on, when further information is available concerning the roll of cloth, the first tag is removed and a second tag is applied to the cloth indicating the number of yards, goods number, and other data. Then still later a sticker bearing this same information has been applied 'to the paper wrapper enclosing the roll or bolt of cloth.

The use of these different tags or labels upon the same roll of cloth makes it necessary to copy or transfer the desired data from one tag to another; this involves a loss of time and increases the chances of error occurring in filling out the tags.

Having in mind the foregoing, the present invention relates to improvements in labels whereby the data bearing member may be first attached to the board upon which the fabric is wound and later secured to the pa- 7 tion adapted to be secured to the cloth board 'per wrapper enclosing the roll of fabric, thus rial such as paper having an anchoring porand a data-bearing portion which may be readily torn off from the anchoring portion for application to the outer face of the paper wrapper, and in a relatively long, flexible connection for maintaining a connection between the anchoring portion and data-bearing portion of the label until after the databearing portion has been secured to the outer face of the paper wrapper. l The various features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a face view of a label constructed in accordance with the present invention;

In the drawings 10 designates a holder or board of any well known or preferredconstruction and upon which the cloth or other fabric 11 is wound as usual to form a roll or bolt of fabric ready for the market;

As soon as the fabric 11 is wound upon the board 10 it is desirable toindicate upon the fabric roll the number of yards contained therein. This is accomplished in accordance with the present invention by providing a label formed of paper or other sheet material and having the construction best shown in Fig. 1 and which consists of an anchoring 100 portion 12 and a. data-bearing portion 13. One face of the entire label is preferably covered with adhesive and the opposite face of the portion 12 may be provided with the name of the fabric manufacturer or any desired advertising matter. The data-bearing portion 13 preferably has blank spaces where the number of yards in the roll, style and other desired information may be indicated.

The label of Fig. 1 is adh'esively secured to the board 10 as shown in Fig. 2 so thatthe data-bearing portion projects from the end of the board 10, and the label may be secured to the board 10 either before or after the fabric 11 is wound thereon. The number of yards may be easily written upon the projecting portion of the label as shown in Fig. 4. Later on the style, lot number and other desired in- I formation may be written upon the projecting portion 13 of the label.

invention, by providing the] abel with the rel atively long flexible connection 15 which extends through areenforced eyelet 16 upon the anchoring portion 12 and through a hole 17 formed in the data-bearing portion 13. .The flexible connection 15 may comprise a piece of string threaded through the holes 16 and 17 and having ends tiedtogether as shown.

' The connection 15 is of suificient length to extend outwardly through the folded end portion of the paper wrap 18 as will be apparent from Fig, 5, so in the data-bearing portion 13 remains connec l to the anchoring portion 12 until after LL the roll of cloth is wrapped up and the data-bearing portion is adhesiv'ely secured to the outer face of the wrapper where it may be readily observed.

As a result of the present invention all dan ger of the data-bearing tag 13 becoming separated from theroll of cloth to which it relates isavoided, and the single tag 13performs the function of. the plurality of tags employed heretofore.

- What is claimed is 1. A label'for clot-h wound upon a holder,

consisting of a sheet of material comprising annit-a-ry whole having an anchoring portion adapted to be secured to the holder and a databearing portion secured to the anchoring portion by a weakened line along which it may be torn off from the anchoring portion, and a connecting element between said portions in addition to said weakened line to connect the data-bearin portion to the roll of cloth after 'the data-bearing portion has been torn off from the. anchoring portion. 1

2; A label for cloth wound upon a holde consisting of a sheet of material comprising a unitary whole. having an anchoring portidn adapted to be secured to the "holder and a data-bearing portion secured to the anchoring portion by a weakened linesalong which it may be torn off from the anchoring portion, and a flexible connecting element between said portion and of sufficient length to permit the data bearing portion to be displayed at the outside of a wrapper for the roll of cloth while still connected bysaid elementto the anchoring portion.

A label for cloth wound upon a holder, consisting of a sheet-of paper comprising a unitary whole having an anchoring portion adapted to be secured to the roll of cloth and a data-bearing portion secured to the anchoring portion by a. weakened line along which it may be torn off from the anchoring portion, and a relatively long cord connection between said portions for maintaining a connection between the roll of cloth and data-bearing portion after thedataebearing portion has been torn off from the anchoring portion.

A label for cloth wound upon a holder, consisting of a sheet of material comprising anchoring" portion covered with adhesive for attachmentto the roll of cloth and a databearing portion secured to the anchoring portion by a weakened line along'which it may be torn from the anchoring portion and having an adhesive covered face, and a flexible connectingelement between said portions in addition to said weakened line and of sufficient length to permit the data-bearing portion to be adhesively secured to the outside of a wrapper for the roll of'cloth while still con nected by said anchoring portion and flexible element to the roll of cloth.
