UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEADLIGHT.
Application filed February 3, 1828. Serial No. 251,638.
This invention relates to improvements in headlights and more particularly to such as are adapted for use in conjunction with reflectors on automobiles and other vehicles,- the object of the invention being to provide an electric lamp bulb which shall be adapted to so direct the rays of light as to prevent glare and at the same time permit a few of the rays to be projected forwardly through the end of the bulb and in axial alignment with the latter. a
With this andother' objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
. In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a front end view, and
. Figure 3 is a view showing a slight modification.
An incandescent electric light bulb is illustrated at 1 and provided with a suitable socket piece 2 to be fitted in a socket in a suitable reflector not shown. Y s V A shield for the bulb isformed by a translucent coating on the bulb, which coating may be of white or colored paint or similar material such as can be applied by a brush or by dipping, or frosted.
The applied shield com rises a portion 3 which covers ap roximate y one half of the body portion 0 the bulb and a portion 4 which covers the end of the bulb except at the center ofsaid end where the glass of the bulb is left transparent to form a comparativel small bull -eye 5 in axial alignment witl i the bulb and its connecting means to a reflector.
With my improvements the main portion of the rays of lig the form of the invention t from the lamp will be so directed as to prevent glare but a few of the rays will be projected forwardl through the bullseye 5 so that said rays will e parallel with the longitudinal axis of the lamp and will afford l1ght;ahead of the vehicle suflicient for all practical purposes and at the same time avoid objectionable glare.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 1, the edges of the ortion 3 of the shield are at right angles to t e portion 4, while in shownin Figure 3, the edges of the rtion 6 are at obtuse angles to the end portion 7, thus leaving a larger clear glass portion 8 than the clear glass portion 3 shown in Figure 1. Y
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. An 'automobilelamp, candescent lamp bulb having a translucent shield applied t ereto, said shield comprising a portion extending longitudinally of the bulb and covering approximately one-half thereof and'a portion covering the end of the bulb except a portion of the bulb in axial alignment with the latter forming a bullseye.
2. An automobile lamp, comprising an incandescent lamp bulb having a coating of translucent material applied thereto, said coating comprising two ortions, one portion extending longitudinal y of the bulb and leaving an oppositely dis sed clear glass portion, the other rtion o gaid shield covering the end of the ulb and leaving a clear glass bullse-in line with the longitudinal axis of the bulb.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
comprising an in- SAMUEL T. BEARE.
