April 25, 1933. J. s WALKER 1,905,322
ANTIGLARE DEVI CE Filed Feb. 29, 1952 0 I/ /II, M I III I.
ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES JOHN s. WALKER, or 'PITT'SBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORVTO' KAN -Gillan ANUFACTURING COMPANY, INCORPORATED, or rrr'rsnunen, PENNSYLVANIA, j
A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE V .ANTIGLARE DEVICE 7 Application filed February 29, 1932. Serial No.r595,943.
The invention relates to a reflector attachment for electric lamps, and more especially to an anti-glare device.
The primaryobject of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof permits the application within a lamp house so as to confront an electric light bulb when placed therein so that the light from such bulb will becontrolled in a manner to eliminate glare on the projecting of the light from the lamp house, the device being adaptable for headlamps, spotlamps or other lamps adapted for use on automobiles.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the application thereof to the lamp avoids any necessity of altering the make-up of the lamp or disturbing any of its assembled parts excepting the removal of its front glass, the device being applied to the frontglass and is susceptible of convenient adjustment to locate the same properly with relation to the electric lamp for the use of the device as an anti-glare medium.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the light projected from the electric bulb will be intercepted or screened in a manner to disrupt the stream and thus subdue the said stream and being in effect a shaded light, thereby avoiding the blinding effect of the headlights upon pedestrians or other persons approaching along a roadway and at the same time assuring maximum driving vision by illumination ahead.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purposes, possessing but few parts, thus rendering it easy of assembly and also readily applicable for mounting within a lamp, free for adjustment, strong, durable, and inexpensive, to manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the. preferred erhbodiment of. the invention, and pointed out,-
in the claim hereunto appendedr In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of a headlamp showing the device constructedin accordance withthe invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of;

sponding parts throughout the several views Referring to the drawingin detail andin 1,
order that the construction, mounting and operatlon of the deviceconstituting the present invention may be accurately understood,
there has been shown a motor vehicle head lamp A which may be of any conventional form, This headlamp preferably is equipped with theusual parabolic reflector B; and ,isf
closed at its front end by a glass or panelC.
the latter being removably fittedito thev body of the lamp A. Entering through. the back of the headlamp Ainto the reflector is a lamp socket 5 carrying an electric bulb or lamp 6, thelatter being formed with the usual stem or base removably engaged in the forward. end of the socket. As is well known, the ordinarylamp of this type proects a very strong stream of light providing a pronounced blinding effect upon persons Whose vision is directed toward the headlamp.
The anti-glare device to be employed with the lamp A comprises a concavo-convex circular base .7 in the form of a vacuum cup having a central stud 8 at its convex side and this stud has swiveled or countersunk therein the head 9 of a threaded bolt 10 for the mounting of a'scoop-like reflector 11 and the coupling of the latter with the base.
The reflector 11 is preferably of the shape as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing and in the apex portion 12 thereof is an internally threaded socketed head 13 which is integral with the reflecto-r'll and this head receives the threaded'boltlO for the coupling of the reflector and vacuum cup 7 together. The reflector has an extended portion 14 and such reflector is adapted to confront the bulb 6 Within the lamp A to intercept the stream of light onillumination of said bulb.
In the use of the device the vacuumcup' 7 ismounted upon the inner face of the glass or'panel C preferably centrally thereof and by the bolt 10 the reflectorll' can beturned 1 by the head 13 engaging said bolt so as to position the extended portion 1 1 at the required location Within the lamp A to serve'as an anti-glare medium to intercept the stream of light from the bulb 6 for eliminating the.
15 blinding effect thereof upon pedestrians or persons approaching along a roadway-and also assuring the" reflection of-the'light inya manner to assure full vision by the illumina: tion of the headlamp for a driverof an auto? 201mobile, p
What'is claimed is The combination with headlamp casing having a reflector, a front glass, an electric lightbulbarranged betweensaid reflector and glass, of an anti-glare device comprising a resilient vacuum cup bodyadapted'ito be engaged with the-inner face of thefront glass inalignmentwith the electric light bulb and having a central-stud, a bolt embeddedin the stud centrally thereof and-projected a distance therefrom, a scoop-like reflector having-its apex engaged upon the bolt and con-- tacting With'the stud, anda nut forming a head for the bolt and threaded thereon to fasten the scoop-like reflector thereto and seated against the stud of the cup, said scooplike reflector at that portion below itsapex. being inclined rearWardly With respect to, thecasing andterminating close to the re flector in said casing.-
