FORM CLAMP.
Application filed April 16, 1928. Serial No. 270,498.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of clamp adapted for attachment to a tie element; to provide a clamp which is adapted to be rigidly secured to one end of a tie element and to be adjustable with respect to the other end thereof; to provide an improved form of bearing member on which an adjusting tool may be -fulcrumed in pulling said other end of the tie relative to the clamp; and to pro vide a clamp of this kind which may be stamped out of sheet metal and which is particularly adapted for use as a form clamp 'in the construction of concrete beams, girders,
columns and the like.
Illustrative embodiments of this invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a clamp showing also parts of a tie band.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse section of a structural shape having supported thereon a clamp attached to one end of a tie band, an adjusting tool being shown in position to pull the other end of the tie band relative to the clamp.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of a modified form of clamp showing the bearing for the tool located at one endof the clamp.
Fig. 4.- is a longitudinal section takenon the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, but showing the tie band kinked by the bridge portion.
The improved clamps herein shown are adapted for use in connection with a. large number of diiferent types of concrete molds. In the construction shown, the clamp 15 used for securing a flexible tie element to a struc tural shape, such as an I-beam 1.
The tie element may consist of a round wire or a flat metal band 2, the size of which depends upon the kind of mold to which the clamps are applied.
In the forms shown the improved clamp comprises a supporting member, preferably a sheet metal stamping, having fastening means for attachment to the ends of the tie band and a bearing part against which an adjusting tool 3 may be fulcrumed. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bearing part is located between the ends of the clamp and in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it is located at one end of the clamp.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the clamp comprises a supporting plate 4 having formed adjacent one end thereof a pair of recesses 5 and an intermediate bar 6 arranged to permit one end of the tie band to be looped around the bar 6 and doubled back upon itself, so as to be frictionally secured to the clamp.
Adjacent the other end of the clamp, a portion of the plate 4 is struck out therefrom to provide a recess 7 and an overlying bridge portion 8. The bridge 8 is spaced from the plane of the plate 4, for the tie element.
The bridge portion 8 is bendable and, when struck by a hammer or similar tool, it is adapted to kink the tie element by forcing a portion thereof into the recess 7, so as to secure this end of the tie element to the clamp after it has been adjusted by the tool 3.
Struck out from the plate 4, between the recesses 5 and the recess 7, is a lug 9 disposed substantially normal to the plate 4 to pro- \vide abearing for the tool 3.
The tool 3 comprises a shank which provides a handle and a head 10 on which is pivotally mounted a U-shaped locking jaw 11, which straddles the head 10 and which is pivotally.
secured thereto by a pin 12. The parts are arranged so that, when the jaw 11 is swung to an angular position relative to the handle,
an opening is provided for receiving the tie element so as to permit the tool to grip the portion of the tie projecting beyond the bridge portion 8.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the
clamp comprises a sheet metal plate 13 having,
recesses 14 and an intermediate bar 15 spaced from one end thereof to permit attachment of the clamp to one end of the tie band.
Formed adjacent the other end of the plate 13 is a recess 16 and an overlyin bridge portion 17 to permit attachment oT thc clamp to the other end of the tie.
The end of the plate 13, adjacent the re cesses 14, is bent upwardly to provide a hearing flange 18 for the tool 3,
In operation, one end of the tie band is looped around the tranverse bar 6 or 15and the tie is then looped around the structural shape, or around the sections of the mold, and inserted through the bridge portion at the other end of the clamp.
The tool 3 is then applied to the projecting end of the tie band and fulcrumed on the bearing member 9 or 18 to pull the tie relative to the clamp. After the tie has been properly adjusted, the bridge portion is forced to provide a passageway '7 (ill downwardly for kinking the band, and the tool 3 may then be removed for use on other molds.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be alterc'd or omitted Without departing from the spirit. of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a flexibletie element, a. sheet metal support mounted on one end of said tie and having a guideway for slidably receiving the other end of said tie, a bearing part struck out from said support, and a detachable tool arranged to grip said other end of sai d tie-and to be fulcrumed on said bearing part for pulling said tie relative to said support.
2. The combination with a flexible tie element, of a form clamp comprising a support,
means for securing both ends of the tie to said support, and a bearing part formed on said support to permit a tie adjusting tool to he fulcrumed thereon, said bearing part being located to one side of the plane of said sup port. for spacing one extremity of said tie from said support.
3. A form clamp comprising a sheet metal plate, and meanson said plate for securing both ends of a tie element thereto, a portion of said plate being bent transversely to said plate to provide a bearing part for a separate tie adjusting tool.
4. A form clamp comprising a sheet metal plate having means thereon for attachment to both ends of a tie element, a portion of said plate being bent substantially normal to said plate .to provide a bearing part for a separate tie adjusting tool.
